Volstad sent down, Badenhop recalled

Recommended Posts

Could just be Volstad coming back up after the All-Star Break. Waltz mentioned this as a possibility in the postgame, and it made sense. Basically, with the All-Star Game coming up, it gives him time to work on things in the minors, and it allows the Marlins to carry an extra reliever in Badenhop, for now.

Reported after the game tonight on Marlins live.

I really like Volstad and I hate to see him demoted knowing that he has the talent but I think it's for the best. Hopefully he has Nolasco like change. He really does have somethings to figure out. Who will replace him or are they planning on starting Badenhop?

He's cut down on giving up the long ball from last year, but he needs a little tweeking for sure. I usually put some blame on the catcher for guys stealing bases, but with the glove Paulino has been showing it looks like most of this blame goes to RV. A little instruction at AAA wouldn't hurt.

I was going to ask when we next need a 5th starter, but it seems like it would be after the All-Star Break? Just don't know who we will slide into his spot if he remains there for a while. West, as far as I know, has only pitched a few games since coming back from injury, so the FO may want to get him so more seasoning. Sanabia is a possibility, as is Badenhop, but I have a feeling it may be a combo of both, like the old days, where the 5th guy in the rotation was shaky and we just inserted whoever is the hot hand (or, at least, hadn't failed yet).

Okay, I'm really confused about Volstad. He thinks he deserves to be in the majors? Dude, you've struggled for months now, I think the Marlins deserve better performances and you need to clean that crap up in the minors, not here where the season is fading quickly.

From what I've been reading this morning Sanabia gets (or is at least expected to get) the ball on Sunday and Badenhop returns to the pen in, I would guess based on how he was used in NOLA, a different role perhaps handling the seventh inning, perhaps being part of a group of swingmen setting up in the eighth.

Who becomes the official "long man" I'm not sure.

Volstad has been frustrating. He was always a good groundball pitcher with a good curveball. He's added a good changeup to his arsenal, but he doesn't seem to be able to command the curveball like he used to. So then he's basically a 2 seamer/changeup guy, but he is prone to elevating the fastball and gets hit hard. He needs to keep the fastball down and regain command of the curveball. He can very easily get 0-2 on a hitter, but he just doesn't have that "put them away" pitch like the curveball used to be. The changeup has worked, yeah, but he needs that curveball back.

Not having a "put away pitch" with 2 strikes has been a real problem and hes not throwing enough cuveballs. Many of the steals have been due to the catcher dropping the ball (last night), or couldnt get the ball out of the glove well, or throws up high or just offline to second etc. The offense hardly ever scores early and never big for him to let him pitch more "comfortably" and his terrible run support is mostly why his record is so bad with the opposing pitchers always seem to pitch lights out against him. Many of the walks were on 3-2 pitches and fouling off more since he doesnt have a put away pitch and umpires missing a lot of strikes in his games but he still needs to get better command. They said it wasnt just one game but until now wasnt his ERA was under "quality start" numbers of 4.50? Its good to go and work to get better on things and better pitch selection and he'll be back up later this month.

Apparently the team thought the same thing I have, that while Volstad hasn't been completely terrible he just hasn't been in control of any of his game for two months now. Even when he hasn't been hit too hard, he just hasn't been efficient enough to last into the game.

Just checked the numbers on Marlins.com for Volstad and Anibal whose pitching great. Amazing how the very same numbers there are-- hits given up, walks, strikeouts, WHIP, OBA, batting average against. More stolen bases and homers are a difference. Yet Anibals 7-4 and 3.35 very good and Volstad 4-8 and 4.78. Big difference. Must be Anibal throws a great pitch just when needed to get out of trouble and Volstad doesnt and also bad luck.

I still have a lot of hope for Volstad .... he always seems to have this gap though .... inefficient with pitches, one bad inning, bad defense behind him, etc

I have tickets for Sundays game so it will be interesting to see who is starting

i'm hoping the fish can make a strong run against the d'backs before the break ..... they won't see JJ, but the marlins will see Haren ... i'm nervous about the nolasco start, i think he'll strike out a lot of batters but also give up 2 HRs - i'm just not sure how many runners those jacks will bring in ..... nate is nate, anibal should be favorable and sunday is a complete mystery now ..... both bullpens are spotty ... both teams strike out a lot and both teams are streaky with the bat

the marlins are a better team ... but I think these games will make me a bit more insane

Im surprised no one's made light of the great fact that Sanabia will be our 6th starter on the season... which means we've kept our opening day starting 5 intact. Considering how our rotation has been the past several seasons... this is such a great fact and a testament to the health and relative consistency of our rotation. JJ and Ani speak for themselves... Ricky has at least kept himself in the rotation through ups and downs. Nate is a 50/50 pitcher but he has never faltered enough to warrant any type of demotion. And Volstad has been "ok, but unlucky" and the fact that he made it to early July is a good thing. My point is, overall, you have to satisfied with the consistency and health of our starting pitching thus far.
