He's probably one of my favorite Marlins of all time.

A few months ago, I posted some estimates that concluded that they will have about 13 mill to spend this off-season to get to 80 million, assuming retention of the highly-paid parts of the team.

 

If they want to get to 90 million to make a splash (and season ticket sales are going very well, never mind the crummy record this year,) that would be 23 million available. Less in '13. but we're talking about '12.

 

A long-term Stanton signing, even one that bought out not just arb years, but about 5 FA years, wouldn't make but a tiny dent in any available amount for 2012. A progressively and exponentially bigger dent every year thereafter, but, again, we're talking about '12.

 

If Loria wants to make a really big splash and go for 100 million, which would be just the other side of "an average MLB" payroll that they consistently claim that they're aiming for while also consistently saying that all revenue increases will go to payroll, well, that would be about 33 million to spend.

 

For that, they could sign Stanton to a back-loaded 10-year deal with maybe a mill or two in '12 and Pujols for 30 million for '12, and have a little left over. Or, Stanton and a CF and a 3B and Infante and a couple of good starting pitchers and a really good bench guy or two. Or whatever combination of whoever.

 

Any way you slice it, they can sign Stanton super-long-term (and I hope they do it within the next 18 months) and still have between 10 and 30 mill to spend on FAs or whoever in '12.

 

No doubt, under any circumstances the hill gets steeper to climb in '13 and thereafter. Their problem will remain avoiding long-term bad contracts, a la the Mutts. Even Stanton could turn into one of those (odds on him are low, but not zero) and I hope they remain petrified of that prospect.

Signing Stanton long term tomorrow will have zero effect on the 2012 payroll.

As I may have mentioned, "..." is the result of the fact that less than 3 characters can't be registered.

 

Maybe it was about 10 years ago, but a single dot was sufficient as a moniker on a now defunct board called "f**kedcompany.com," which trafficked exclusively in employee rumors and leaks about dot-com bubble failures (as they were rumored to be happening and actually were happening) until the board was finally sued out of existence a couple of years later by Ford (as in car company,) believe it or not. Go figure.

 

Anyone could, and most did post as a dot. Or a comma. Or semi-colon. Or whatever.

 

It struck me as the ultimate anonymous moniker. Plus, it was great fun trying to figure out which dot was which.

 

I was feeling nostalgic when I registered.
