The Official Giancarlo Stanton Man Crush Thread

I would sign him for his foreseeable career. 17 years and just insure the last 7 years to hedge against shenanigans.

If only we could. Assuming that you're serious (and I have no particular reason to think that you're not, although that's possible) it's a wonderful idea, except that there is no, as in zero, market for disability insurance beyond 3 years. See my posts about Steinbrenner and the A-Rod long-term re-signing a few years ago. George tried to insure it and couldn't, and instead stuck his neck way out there.

It's one of the reasons why Loria had always previously been reluctant to sign long-term deals in the old low-revenue environment. Perfectly understandable.

Now that they are into the mid-pack of payrolls, they just have to fend for themselves and take on beyond-3-year risk which can't be covered by insurance.

More likely a 10 year deal. Even that would be high-risk. Crap-loads of money. 17 years probably isn't even remotely doable, unless it's at some unbelievably gigantic discount. Loria may well take a big risk, but he's not likely to risk his entire franchise on one guy. Stanton is also not likely to discount himself as heavily as would be required.

I suspect the Marlins will sign him a month or two into the season, ala Hanley. Something around 7yrs/60 mil would seem plausible if that's the case. I don't really see the point in waiting. Few guys are as legit and unlikely to regress as Stanton.

Today on Power Alley (Kevin Kennedy's show on MLB Radio on Sirius XM) Kennedy said Stanton has a better chance than ever to be in consideration for NL MVP.

Says with Fielder & Pujols gone, Braun & Howard out for the 1st couple of months, his biggest competition will be Kemp.

I think Hanley wins the MVP before Stanton does. With those major competitors out of the way, if he comes back and has another 2009-like season there's no Pujols in front of him this time... If there is ever a year where Hanley is poised to make that happen, it's with Reyes+Bonifacio hitting in front and Stanton hitting behind in the middle of his "prime years". Stanton will get his turn sooner or later.

You get the insurance 9 years from now

Unfortunately, there's no such thing as insuring the last X years of a contract at any point in time.

No MLB deal gets insured against disability beyond the first 3 years because the law of large numbers just ain't there, and even in that relatively short time-frame there aren't many deals to be done. The 3 year thing is sort of marginal on the part of the insurers, they're pushing the envelope from a risk-pooling standpoint.

It's pretty esoteric stuff, looked at from the vantage point of an underwriter for an insurer or re-insurer. Go beyond 3 years and it's the law of very small numbers, which means there's no chance of insuring anything on a contract-by-contract basis. At any point beyond 3 years. Ever.

I'd put at least $100 down on this. Kemp is going to be the only real competitor, although Uggla might be a dark horse.

The only worry with Giancarlo is the possibility that he gets sidelined with these minor injuries (inflammation, hamstring, etc.)

i saw him and nolasco at the heat game yesterday and i though that

1) nolasco got fat

or

2) giancarlo is a superhuman

I was at the game too. Where were they sitting?
