122.4 mph was the speed off the bat of Giancarlo Stanton's HR Monday. It's the fastest tracked in the history of ESPN Home Run Tracker.

 

Not only was it the fastest, but it was a whopping 10 MPH faster than the closest one, according to today's Sun-Sentinel. From 112 to 122.4 is a massive jump, especially when you consider how low the velocity of the pitch was (Moyer).

Not sure where you're getting 112 being the next highest - there's a 117.5 from Jose Bautista on the 16th and Travis Hafner's 481 foot blast in mid-April went 117.2. There's quite a few over 112, and that's just this season. However, 4.9 mph faster than any other ball leaving the ballpark since tracking is pretty awesome.

As I said, it was in the Sun-Sentinel newspaper. They said there was a David Ortiz shot that was next-fastest from ESPN. Is ESPN where you got your info, too? Agreed about the 4.9, which is still a significant jump.

I got my info from hittrackeronline.com, which I believe is made by ESPN ... heh.

I hope GMS crushes that home run display sooner than later with a few of those bombs. Still hasn't grown on me.

I know Stanton is extremely streaky, but when he's hot, he's a man amongst boys. With a little consistency from month to month, he could become one of the top ten hitters in all of baseball.

So, just doing some research, Stanton's grand slam off of Moyer, which went 122.4 MPH off the bat, IS indeed the fastest since tracking, but not by the amount we think. I've found already 3 people who also had 122.3.

When dealing the all-time greats, the third/fourth year is when they normally make presence known as something special to all.

Many of us have recognized Stanton's potential for awhile.

Just let him stay healthy..that's the main thing. And cutting down on the KO's, that's the second main thing:)

I predict 51 HR's this year, and an OPS near or over 1.000.

Well, due to more games played he's K'd more in this month, but only by 4. 20 in April, 24 in May, 9 game difference going into the game currently playing.

 

Walks is what's impressing me - 4 in April, 15 in May [before tonight, 16 now]. Also, he's OPSing 1.146 this month before this game.

I predict 51 HR's this year, and an OPS near or over 1.000.

 

 

He'd need an incredible pace to get 51 home runs, pretty big pace to get to 1.000 and keep it for entire season.

 

I think around 33-35 home runs and an OPS near the high .800s to low .900s is what should be expected. Stanton had a few of these kind of outbursts last season before leveling off. He's still incredibly streaky.

Did you read the title of this thread.

It's not the place to down-play what he might accomplish.

The K% is going down every season:

 

2010: 31%+

2011: 27%+

2012: 22%+ (currently)

 

His GB rate has decreased, LD rate increased. You can tell he changed his hitting mechanics if you compare his stance from then rookie Stanton, to now. Mallee did a great job.

 

21 extra base hits (and counting) in May alone.

That's pretty amazing. He makes me wonder if he can just buck the odds and become even better than any reasonable projections would have suggested.

I'd rather the walk rate go up than the strikeout rate go down. The BB% rate is down to 9.8% from 11.7% but it's still early and we need to wait and see what happens from June-September.
