Never thought I'd say this, but this guy might be a very good investment for four or five years. He'd probably come at a cheaper price than Nolasco as well.

He has been an animal this season I'd love to have him as a 3 or 4 (want to get a better number 2 pitcher) in the rotation.

I'd love to sign him to a 4 year deal worth about 10 to 12 MM.

He's going to get a lot more than that. He is at $1.25 million this year, and he's going to get a nice raise.

Touche.

I'd work with something around 4 years/14-18 MM.

I still think it's more like 4 years, $25 million if i had to formulate an educated guess.

I'd personally still go year-to-year with Anibal. He still has an injury history, and he still walks too many guys. And a significant part of how low his ERA is is due to HR rates that he's unlikely to keep up.

I was also thinking around $6 million per year.

I'd actually lock Sanchez up. Yeah the labrum surgery is always hovering over him, and he is actually looking like he did in 2006. Hell, he was actually pretty good last year as well (although neither accounted for the amount of innings he has this year).

I feel a lot safer with Sanchez long term than Nolasco. Ricky has much better stuff, but inconsistency has plagued his career while Anibal has been consistently stellar.

I said it earlier in the year that he's been the pleasant surprise of the season for me. It wasn't too long ago that I didn't even think he'd last in this rotation for long, though that was mostly due to injuries. Happy to be wrong about him.

Still not sure I'd open up the pocketbook for him yet. A good '06 and a good 2010. Not enough to base a big paycheck on just yet. Doesn't take anything away from him, he's really worked hard this season and it's paid off.

A lot of people keep talking about this mystical "#2 starter." But hasn't anibal been one this year?

An ERA of 3.13 (although WHIP is a bit high at 1.31)? How many #3 or #4 starters dish out those numbers? If I remember correctly that ERA is better than what JJ finished with last season and what Ricky did in 08. He doesn't have the stuff that JJ or Ricky has so he's gonna give up some hits but he's definitely pitched well enough to earn the #2 label this year. Just quickly looking at all 30 teams, I see maybe 13-16 teams where Anibal could be a legitimate #2 starter. Maybe I'm wrong, and I haven't looked at all the advanced stats, but going by ERA and how he dominated May and recently, he seems like a pretty average #2 to me.

If you want another ace just say it. Don't ask for a #2 when we have one and maybe even two.

I'd really be hesitant to give Anibal more then 5 Mil per year.

He's been great this season but he's injury prone and I'm not sure he could be much better then he is now.

Sanchez has been great, and while he won't keep the homeruns down like this, I doubt he starts giving up homeruns like Nolasco. I see him as a 3.5-4 ERA pitcher, which is great.

Absolutely we have a #2 in Sanchez. His home run rate will go upa alot but his ERA should stay in the mid to high 3's if he stays healhty.

I agree.

i just had a little realization about the front office. not sure if anybody else is realizing HOW the front office is increasing payroll. They arent going out to sign free agents because they are trying to erally still be cautious in how they spend the money but they ar locking up key players from within. They realize that that is how the mid market teams do it and that is what we are trying to become.

You have to sign the key guys from within such as Nolasco, sanchez, uggla, possibly stanton if he keeps this up maybe even after net year if he really shows what he is capable of. You then sprinkle in random free agents to add to the core, not build the core around said free agents.

That being said, id wait until mid next year at the earliest with anibal to really show if he is for real but no doubting that anibal has been tremendous this year.

We certainly can't bring in FA like BoSox, Mets, Yankees, etc., etc., can. But it would be nice to do it just once :whistle I can dream, can't I? :mis2

Agree with the consensus on this one. Don't think he's ever going to be much better than this and the injury history is really worrysome. I'd rather go year to year.

...and remember, Anibal has to be willing to sign a long term deal with the Marlins. Didn't he have some bitter feelings over the way the FO handled his contract the year he injured his arm? I don't see him giving us any type of "hometown discount."

Everybody has been saying all year that his numbers will come down and they haven't, they've actually improved. Who's to say they will next year?

Injuries mean you dont rely on the guy, meaning you need depth behind him. That doesnt mean you stay away from him. A good 3 or 4 year contract could really benefit the Marlins and Sanchez.

I think the idea is that you get him for cheap right now. The front office NEEDS to start dedicating to building the pitching staff, and unfortunately our young guys haven't shown that they can step up, so relying on them for the future is a bigger gamble then signing a guy like Sanchez.

As long as he keeps his weight down (which he has this year) then I'll feel more comfortable giving him a 3-4 year deal. With the injury history I'd see if he can keep it up until mid-season next year and then entertain the long term deal. But hey, if they can get him now for cheap then I'm all for it.

Anibal has the stuff to be a great number 2 for us down the stretch, but I would probably see how he performs one more year injury free before giving him a contract.
