August 30, 201015 yr I know he's on the team next year since he signed the contract but I would rather have him as a "Coach's Assistant" or some kind of not important role in which he doesn't play.
August 30, 201015 yr 23 times in 54 chances, which means there is roughly a 55% chance [of blowing the game] That would be a 43% chance. Still total crap. I have referred to Nunez here within my little domain as "Numb-nuts" from game 1 of this year. Every single time this year he has come into a save situation, I have screamed at the TV: "Don't blow this game, numb-nuts!" And all too often he has done exactly that. He needs to be gone, I'm sick of him. I don't want to see him in the 9th or the 8th or the 7th or the 6th. And although they signed Helms for next year, perhaps they can convince him that he should be a coach in AAA instead. An expensive AAA coach he would be, but at least it would keep him off of our roster next year. Perhaps he could provide some "veteran leadership" to the AAA guys, since he's not capable of providing much else. Sign Murphy and Tracy for the bench/3B while we wait for Dominguez.
August 30, 201015 yr Hanley is playing tomorrow according to Frisaro....great to hear Good we need the Red Haired Wonder to do what he does best against the Nationals.

August 30, 201015 yr Obviously the bullpen and specifically Nunez let JJ down today, but I've said it before and I'll say it again that JJ is not quite in the top tier of pitchers yet because too many of his starts are 100 pitches through 6 innings. The more work you take care of yourself, the less you have to depend on others to finish your work,

Sure, he doesn't throw 8 complete games like Halladay does, but he's right up there with the best of them.

August 30, 201015 yr Hanley is playing tomorrow according to Frisaro....great to hear Glad to hear Hanley's ok. That was scary seeing him hold his chest like that. Perhaps the red-haired fury within was too much to handle today? I hope he unleashes it against the Nats He started off really well in today's game and to have to come out of the game must've sucked.
August 30, 201015 yr If the Marlins Bullpen performed even at an average level, I wonder what our record would be.
August 30, 201015 yr I'd like to sign Murphy and Tracy for the bench regardless. They're both decent gloves and they both can hit. Hopefully Cogs does well at 3rd, but if he doesn't, well there you go, ready-made platoon solution for a year or two. If Uggla won't sign for 4/44 or less, then trade him for starting pitching.

August 30, 201015 yr Murphy doesn't need to be re-signed, the club has control over him and he'll cost the minimum. He'll be back. If the Marlins Bullpen performed even at an average level, I wonder what our record would be. Going into today, they had a 4.10 ERA and 1.38 WHIP. Going into today, the NL average bullpen had a 4.10 ERA and 1.38 WHIP. Our problem is when they give up runs, it's when it matters most. Their needs to be more consistency rather than lights out or really sh*tty.
August 30, 201015 yr I was listening to the Braves announcers this afternoon. They are bad. Oh, and Leo should be thrown over a fence or maybe in a garbage can .

The more work you take care of yourself, the less you have to depend on others to finish your work, I think I agree with this. I don't think JJ has that "out" pitch that can really get guys to whiff or make weak contact. Too many times you see batters having 8-10 pitch at-bats by fouling off fastball and sliders pitch after pitch.

August 30, 201015 yr Lol at anyone trying to say Nunez isnt that bad of a closer. His Whip, ERA, BAA and blown saves are terrible for a closer. The only reason hes our closer is because unlike most teams, we refuse to give up on guys the FO decides it wants to stuff down our throats as the 'solution' and he looked like the best guy on our roster for the job for a couple months. but u could prob throw brian sanchez or veras out there and get similar results. on most other teams hes already lost his job long ago. and i tend to think beinfest is a smart guy and knows what hes doing but why did we bring back Wes Helms? Chad Tracy and Donnie Murphy are both much better than he is. Beinfest has made some boneheaded moves this year. (Not dealing ross before the deadline and then letting him get signed for nothing)

Too many times you see batters having 8-10 pitch at-bats by fouling off fastball and sliders pitch after pitch. You're suffering from memory loss my friend. That's really only been the last few starts, at the ASB all you saw were stories written about JJ and quotes from batters about just how hard it was to hit is pitches.

Sure, he doesn't throw 8 complete games like Halladay does, but he's right up there with the best of them. Halladay throwing 8 complete games is what makes him better than Josh Johnson at this point. I don't know how you can mention that and not understand that a pitcher who can dominate a game entirely by himself is better than a pitcher who may pitch great for 6 innings, but leaves it up to unreliable bullpens to get a win, not only forcing relief pitchers to also pitch well in order to complete a win, but also forcing a bullpen to pitch innings and possibly burn a couple of guys that could have rested arms for the next game. Don't you think that Johnson would get more wins if he weren't burning himself through 6, and instead could pitch into the 7th and 8th, relying less on our bullpen?
August 30, 201015 yr Murphy doesn't need to be re-signed, the club has control over him and he'll cost the minimum. He'll be back. Of course you're right. I don't know what I was thinking, it must be that the guy fields and hits like he's been around forever. I like it, my delusions of longevity notwithstanding.
August 30, 201015 yr I don't totally agree with Sirspud but it's not like he doesn't have some sort of point. Here's all the players in the NL with ERA's under 3 and the amount of games they had that were at least 7 innings. Rk Player Games>=7IP W-L% ERA WHIP SO CG 1 Roy Halladay 21 .640 2.22 1.024 186 8 3 Chris Carpenter 16 .778 2.93 1.172 144 0 5 Adam Wainwright 16 .680 2.18 0.998 171 5 7 Ubaldo Jimenez 15 .773 2.71 1.129 160 3 8 Brett Myers 15 .588 2.97 1.222 145 2 9 Tim Hudson 14 .750 2.24 1.094 109 1 T-12 Josh Johnson 11 .688 2.36 1.083 166 1 T-29 Mat Latos 7 .722 2.29 0.982 150 1 T-45 Jaime Garcia 5 .667 2.33 1.289 118 1
August 30, 201015 yr Check out that WHIP on Latos. Dude its crazy good. Way to represent Broward College North Campus. Too bad he went over rookie eligibility by an inning last year or he'd be the front runner for ROY. Yeah, that was off topic.
August 30, 201015 yr The best bullpen in the league is the Padres bullpen. Most of their guys are minimum salary guys. We don't need to overspend for a bullpen; we just need to find the right guys. And that falls on the shoulders of Hill & Beinfest. The last 2 or 3 years they have made mostly disasterous decisions for the club on the field at the moment, and I blame them for the failures. They need to start putting together a team for 2012. Loria does not want that to be a mediocre or worse year in the new stadium. LoMo, Stanton, Coglan and locking up JJ, Hanley and possibly Uggla are good things but they need to really get it together and scout out some FA's or trades that can make that BP better. There is no guarantee that some of the guys do as well at the plate or better next year. If they stink the joint up at the plate and also have a disaster in the BP, Loria will contemplate some front office changes I am sure.

Sometimes good pitchers are taking too long to execute that out pitch, or not quite having the command to pound the plate enough that while racking up strikeouts he is also racking up a large pitch count.
