November 7, 201016 yr Scott Olsen filed for FA today. and Edgar Renteria is not reitiring. I wouldn't mind having him back on a minor league deal. He can do a couple of things. 1. He can make a case in Spring Training to be the #5 starter. It would give the team a lefty starter, and it would allow a guy like Sanabia to fill a spot in the pen. Olsen showed signs of being his old-self again in 2010. 2. If the starting doesn't work out, he can be a cheap lefty option in the bullpen. Olsen's had some very good years against LH hitters in his career. It would give the team another alternative, and alternatives are never bad especially when there's no contractual risk involved. JMO

JMO The problem is his old self isn't very good. His old-self = starter in the big leagues. He might have a problem with HR's, but 2006 Scott Olsen starts for any team in the big leagues. Olsen had some years in which he struggled, but like Anibal Sanchez...he had a torn labrum. His velocity is back (more 89-90 than 86-88 again), and the increase in velocity resulted in improvement in his 2010 peripherals. Is he a stud? No. But considering Beinfest has had filler lefties like Robertson/Hendrickson in his rotations, I'd assume he'd have no problem bringing Olsen back on a minor league deal. To put things in perspective, Olsen's peripherals in 2010 were pretty much identical to Volstad's.
November 7, 201015 yr Frisaro tweets not to expect Olsen to return to the Marlins. "Both sides seem to have moved on."

It seems like the Marlins are content with a rotation of JJ, Anibal, Nolasco, Volstad, and Sanabia heading into next year, though.
November 8, 201015 yr :lol Nationals lurking in Cliff Lee sweepstakes Sources tell Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com that the Nationals are lurking as a potential sleeper team to land Cliff Lee. "They're going to step up and try to get a top free agent," one baseball insider told Crasnick. "They'd like to make a splash." Lee is going to get big money no matter what, but remember that he also wants to be in position to win. That's a huge strike against the Nationals, no matter how hard they try. Outside of a potential trade (Crasnick includes James Shields and Matt Garza of the Rays), Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo may have to settle for a second-tier option like Jorge De La Rosa or a rebound candidate like Javier Vazquez in free agency. Cliff Lee will listen to the Nationals' sales pitch. Nationals General manager Mike Rizzo wants a frontline starting pitcher and Lee is the best available in the free agent market. Lee is likely to command a similar deal to CC Sabathia's seven-year, $161 million contract and that could quickly price Washington out. "We need a front-of-the-rotation guy to put everybody in their proper places in the rotation," Rizzo said in September. "That's the No. 1 priority going into the offseason. We definitely have depth, prospect-wise, to pull off a deal for a pitcher."
November 8, 201015 yr They made a big push for Teixeira and actually offered more than the Yankees. Not exactly. They did offer slightly more in terms of annual salary ($22.85 M compared to the Yankees' $22.50 M), but the Yankees offered $180/8 and the Nats offered $160/7
November 8, 201015 yr The Yankees also offered more of a winning team That too. Call me crazy, but I would actually rather see Lee sign with the Nationals than the Yankees.

November 8, 201015 yr I would much rather not have to face Cliff Lee and Stephen Strasburg for the next half decade.
November 8, 201015 yr I would much rather not have to face Cliff Lee and Stephen Strasburg for the next half decade. Imagine back to back series against the Phillies and Nats and having a run of facing Halladay-Oswalt-Hamels-Lee-Strasburg on 5 consecutive nights
November 8, 201015 yr I would much rather not have to face Cliff Lee and Stephen Strasburg for the next half decade. I'd much rather face Cliff Lee in the regular season than in the World Series.

November 8, 201015 yr I would much rather not have to face Cliff Lee and Stephen Strasburg for the next half decade. I'd much rather face Cliff Lee in the regular season than in the World Series. It's much more difficult to get to the World Series when guys like Cliff Lee are in your division. I've never even really heard that line of thinking before, to be honest. Normally, one builds their team in hopes that they make the playoffs before even thinking about the World Series. There are so many factors that contribute to reaching a World Series that it's almost impossible to predict.

November 8, 201015 yr I'd rather GET to the World Series and face Cliff Lee than not get to the World Series and not watching him face someone there. But that's just me lol.
