Coghlan has setback during rehab

NEW YORK -- Chris Coghlan's rehabilitation from knee inflammation has hit a bump in the road.

The Marlins outfielder will stop playing games for Double-A Jacksonville in order to receive treatment on the left knee that has had him on the disabled list since June 17.

"The knee stiffened up a bit, and we want to back him off and get it completely healthy," Marlins president of baseball operations Admin Beinfest said in a statement through a team spokesman.

Just take the year off already, Coghlan.

At this point I don't think the Marlins should consider him as a starting player next season, because his productivity and health create a lot of questions marks. He should have to earn his way back on the team. Hopefully the Marlins add a CFer in the offseason.

It's the safer way to go, for sure. We still need to solidify as many as 3 positions for next year - 2B, 3B, CF - but as few as 1 if you believe in Boni as an everyday 2B and Matt Dominguez being able to hold down the 3B job.

Wow.

If Bonifacio performs at this level through the rest of the season, he should have some job security at second base. Don't bring Infante back.

They should find some third base depth too, but CF should be the priority. Even if Coghlan is healthy, I have little faith that he can hit. And he plays bad defense on top of that.

Poor Chris. He is such a decent young man. I still admire him a great deal for his Christian values and ideals. A real role model for our young players and children.

Did everyone forget we're in July? Cogs has time to heal and play plenty of minor games and still come back in August

Everyone here talking about taking the rest of the season off

I understand all the skepticism about Coghlan's bat, but he shouldn't be expected to be this bad going forward .Yes his career line is inflated by his rookie year, but I don't think a .750-.775 OPS is out of the question for him. His rookie year aside, he put up tremendous K/BB ratios in the minors and had much better slash lines.

He needs to find a way to fix his approach. That said, he certainly shouldn't have a lock on CF next year. I was against the Cameron trade primarily because I wanted to see what Petersen would do with some regular PA. He was absolutely raking in AAA. But probably because this team likes the idea of having a veteran presence "guiding" Stanton and Morrison in the outfield, the're not even starting Petersen against righties.

I thought Cogs was more then adequate in centerfield especially for a first year centerfield. He made some outstanding plays and very few mistakes. I wouldn't necessary say he plays bad defense. Maybe we each saw something different. Just my thoughts.

I say throw most of our offseason money at SP lol, ill deal with coghlan for another year

Like i been saying all year, they need to go out and sign 2 good SP and a 3B

Amen

Actually I felt something was definitely not right with CC not because he wasn't hitting it was the K's He never struckout at this rate before at any level . A bad knee will mess any swing up. It is hard to turn on the ball. He needs ti take his time coming back for sure

All fielding metrics have him as a negative defender and I would argue that most trained eyes would agree with this. Statistically he's probably one of the worst CFers in the NL, although he's improved over last year in the outfield.

Where's the love for Chris Coghlan?

That may be, but as you said he has improved, I would argue he has much improved as practice at any position will do for you. He made some outstanding plays. I'm looking at the future for him and not the past. If he were a natural outfielder throughout his full career, I would put more stock into his past numbers and be quicker to say he is a poor defender. This may be a case of agreeing to disagree. :)

Since you're just begging for it....

Agreed 100% on all of your points. Give CC a break for now. Sign some good arms and either a CF and lets Cogs fight for 2B/3B or sign a 2B/3B and let him fight for the CF job. No he shouldn't just be handed the starting job but he should have a leg up on everybody else.

this year has been a series of setbacks.

Shut Cogs down for the year, have him just do rehab/baseball activities and maybe play in a few games at the end of the year to shake of a little rust if we can afford it.

I'd venture to say why not move Cogs back to the infield, and see if he can be a utility guy who plays everday at LF/3B/2B. Or maybe our every day 2B who spells Boni at 3B and Lomo at LF when they need rest.

I like him, but no need to push him. Same with JJ unless we are in the playoff race towards the end.

Can't say i disagree with both of them. The way they are being with JJ, I wouldnt be surprised if he is out for the year anywa.y
