Really? If Lomo or say Stanton started his career off like Hanley and then tailed off for whatever reason you think people would be okay with it? You make it seem like the only reason Hanley was valuable was due to position scarcity at SS. Hanley got the contract he got because he was a great hitter, regardless of position. He's declined since.
