JJ Rumors

Featured Replies

After thinking about it some more, I actually changed my mind and want JJ to stay (and hopefully retire) as a Marlin. He's been a class act, and is still an ace to me. He will get is velocity back IMO, and will prove to all the naysayers that he still got it.

It svcks though, that he is probably going to be moved this winter, if he doesn't get traded by this Tuesday.

It's mostly been singles, though, that JJ gives up, isn't it?

Or at least it was at the beginning for the longest time.

Either way - I agree, maybe a little less, maybe we give an extra [buck maybe, if we pay his contract?], perhaps that could get us Olt and a B prospect.

His XBH% is only a tad below his career average (0.3% lower) or 0.1% lower than his 2008-2011 average. He's giving up more hits overall, but it's not just singles (although the singles are slightly more frequent). That's still not comforting with that drop and velocity and increase in overall hits.

Hmm ... I see.

There have been a few starts where he's hit 95 a handful times, hasn't he? And at least 94 consistently? He could maybe get back some velocity next season. Or, perhaps if his change-up could be a little slower? Is that possible to do that by changing grips? Are his hands big enough to try the split-change?

Hmm ... I see.

He actually peaked mid season and has steadily dropped since:

Is there a way to view just 2012? Instead of the last 5 years.

The start before last JJ was dominant, like the old JJ. THis last start he struggled a bit but was still very effective in limiting hits. ( it was the walks that led to both runs. Still. giving up 1 earned run in 5 is not too shabby and he had control issues. I think we are seeing an upward trend in JJ's llast 3 starts so lets hope he gets better and better. He took a bit of a step back but not much. Overall he's going in the right direction and if he doesn't get hurt, he will get back to old JJ. ( eventually)

We're basically talking about trading a year of JJ here. I'm not counting the rest of this year, when we have no shot. We're not gonna' sign him to a multi-year contract. What's the 1 year of 2013 worth? Not a great deal, to us, or to the team signing him...with the uncertainty of his lost velocity. I wouldn't trade him for some utility player, but a couple of mid-mevel prospects would do it.

He got singled to death through pretty much April and May. Not sure if that had to do more with the lower velocity or his slider not breaking hard.

According to Pitch F/X, the horizontal and vertical movement on the slider have not changed much at all from 2010.

I blame mostly the fastball. From 2010 to now, the whiffs have declined (10.3% to 5.67%), the LD% has increased (3.21% to 5.67%) and balls in play have increased (14.4% to 21.02%).

This basically means that hitters are making better contact off of the fastball and they are making contact more frequently.

I'm going to throw something out of the blue and just point out that JJ's struggles from the yesterday could be because he was trying to do too much in front of all the scouts along with the idea that he could be dealt. True, players can say that they aren't affected by rumors, but we're all human. Considering that he didn't completely blow the game (still got through 5.0IP, 2 runs (1ER that scored from two out walk with the other run being scored through an error) and the only reason why his pitch count was so high was because he got into full counts often trying to get that "perfect pitch", I believe that he actually is fine and returning to form.

I think that if he were trying hard to impress the scouts he would have been lighting up the radar gun more. His velocity was really poor. I'm guessing that the loss of command yesterday perhaps had something to do with him trying to overcompensate for the lower velocity.

I wanna throw something else out of the blue.

If we weren't facing the Padres, more than likely they would have got more than 2 runs off of 6 walks, 2 hits and an error.

It's all Hanley's fault, anyways.

He's only averaged above 94 MPH in two of his starts this season. He averaged 94.1 against Boston and Atlanta in consecutive starts in early to mid-June. He did pretty well in both of them.

Rangers will go all out for lee now that he's out there. I wonder what other teams are in on jj. We've only heard Texas as truly in on jj

For what it's worth, I'm hearing Texas is offering Olt for Cliff Lee.

Seems they want him a lot more than JJ. Just a rumor at this point.

Is there any way I could see that fangraphs velocity chart for just 2012 and not have to see the 6 season chart?

That hole in 3B just keeps getting bigger by the hour.

I don't think you can get the graph just for one season.

On his player page, go to "game log" and then select "Pitch F/x" followed by "velocity." That might be what you are looking for.

Yeah, that's what I did, but there was no option to just choose one season or anything. Ah well. Thanks anyways. It's still useful.

That should give you the average velocity for each start but in numerical rather than graphical form. Depending on what you are looking to find out, that might actually be preferable.

Numerical would be awesome.

Via @jaysonst Marlins telling teams Monday they're just going to keep their JJ unless something unforeseen happens.

For what it's worth, I'm hearing Texas is offering Olt for Cliff Lee.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman heard from a source Monday that the Rangers are a "long shot" for Cliff Lee.

And the Dodgers are said to have no interest because of the money involved. Lee is owed $25 million per season from 2013-2015 and carries a $27.5 million club option for 2015 with a $12.5 million buyout. The Phillies could struggle to find a legitimate suitor at this year's deadline

You don't know what to believe at this point. There's smoke screens and rumors everywhere...

Via @jaysonst 15 scouts watched Johnson's Sunday start in which he had 6BB, 4K, in 5IP. One scout called it: "Uninspiring."

More @jaysonst #Marlins see more value in keeping Johnson, heading into his free-agent year, than trading him just because.

Rotoworld just posted a story that Marlins intend on keeping JJ

Here it is:

The Marlins have told teams that they're planning on keeping Josh Johnson, reports ESPN's Jayson Stark.

Johnson drew interest from several clubs, but Miami's asking price was sky-high from the start and apparently isn't going to drop before Tuesday's non-waiver trade deadline. The 28-year-old right-hander is under contract with the Marlins through 2013. He has a 4.04 ERA and 109/41 K/BB ratio in 124 2/3 innings this season.
