If we don't at least get Olt for JJ, then hold on to him. Doesn't really hurt us either way.

Hopefully they just wanted to see if JJ was healthy after the whole finger thing last game. They know what he can do. With Feliz re injuring himself hopefully they get desperate. Ogando has only made 1 start this season and Im not sure who'd they replace him in the pen with. I want Olt damn it.

 

 

Agreed with everything. There are no solutions in FA, no good ones at least but there's a bevy of pitchers. Getting Olt would be the best move for us. But holding on to JJ ain't so bad.

I'm I the only one that can see JJ is no longer a number 1? He has not hit higher than 95mph this year and is at 91-93 for the game. Pre injury he was 96-99 the whole game even would top 100 sometimes.BIG differance. I'm sure scouts know this:)... This guy Olt has a 390 OBP in minors for career. Straight up for JJ right now!

Im not high on JJ becoming the JJ of before. In my opinion he wont live up to what we're paying him. Also JJ is prone to injuries.. It's a tough decision though.

Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports writes that right-hander James Shields "is staying in Tampa Bay."

The Rays have been shopping Shields for the past couple of weeks but haven't been blown away by any particular offer. And now they're just two games back of a Wild Card spot and with Evan Longoria nearing activation. It'd be silly to suddenly shake things up.

According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Red Sox are now "unlikely" to trade Josh Beckett.

Olney says the Red Sox talked to a "small handful of teams about him" but found no offers to their liking. Beckett is owed a total of $31.5 million in salary over the next two seasons and has posted a 4.57 ERA in 17 starts this year. It's doubtful Boston got any great offers.

 

 

So basically JJ is the only top pitcher out there for trade which can only help his value.

Its looked to me all year that JJ is no longer an ace as it seems hes lost his fastball. It looks like some scouts for other teams feel the same way. That being said, if we arent prying away a few top prospects for him, he still has value to us and shouldnt be traded. Let him chew up innings for us while we actually develop our younger guys in the minors. He might even be able to regain some form and be a Buerhle type pitcher.

JJ's surgery is a 2nd year recovery kind of thing. I expected him to be average this year.

As long as the Marlins either keep JJ or get Olt, I'm fine with it. We better not panic and trade JJ for Grimm and Buckly and another throw in and that's it or I'll be pretty damn upset.

 

And I wouldn't be surprised at all to see JJ return to his career avg of 3.00 ERA next year. Especially in our pitchers park, more rest, learned a bit more how to pitch here, etc.

I'm really not that convinced that Johnson will improve much next season. Remember that he's coming off of a pretty severe shoulder injury and nobody really had any clue how his arm would respond to that.

 

Of note, his velocity has dropped off. In his prime, Johnson was throwing 94-95 MPH. This season he's averaging less than 93 MPH and he only averaged 91.77 MPH in yesterday's start. That's a pretty substantial decline and there's not much certainty that he can recover that velocity.

 

He's getting hit around a ton this season and striking out less hitters. You can bet that the decline in velocity has a lot to do with it.

 

I'd trade him. I don't think his trade value will ever get any higher over the duration of his contract and it would be nice if the Marlins wouldn't have the burden of his contract in 2013 when there is a rather realistic possibility of injury or continued underperformance.

 

He's probably not an ace anymore, but the Marlins are demanding the trade return of an ace. He's still a good pitcher, though, so I think that the Marlins should set their sights a little bit lower and try to work something out with Texas. Just try to get Olt and maybe some other additional prospects. The Marlins could really use someone at third.

It's mostly been singles, though, that JJ gives up, isn't it?

Either way - I agree, maybe a little less, maybe we give an extra [buck maybe, if we pay his contract?], perhaps that could get us Olt and a B prospect.

He got singled to death through pretty much April and May. Not sure if that had to do more with the lower velocity or his slider not breaking hard.
