Ozzie, majority of coaches dismissed

I agree, would be nice to at least even see a Wild Card game.

Since 2003, my two favorite sports teams have combined for one playoff series/game. With the playoffs comes legitimacy and respectability, if only briefly. I'd like to see that once in a while.

Marlins and?

Hey, mine too. Can't very well get rid of my Tampa Bay Bucs tattoo though.

Edit: oh wait, they've been to 2 playoff games since 2003. Never mind. Nothing to see here.

Thought it would have been obvious, but Dolphins.

I thought it might have been, and you meant "after 2003"

You know, I'm sure it's pretty obvious but I don't see us making any front office changes if they are looking for a manager. You would think that they Loria would want the new baseball people to make that decision instead of Beinfest., but who am I kidding, Loria makes the decisions anyway right?

Beinfest is only here because he is a yes man.

Bitter, much?

:lol

What a pleasure to be on a board where almost no one understands how business operates, never mind MLB business, or even the odds of winning.

It's narcissism in the extreme -- you, Loria, didn't satisfy my expectations, therefore, you are totally worthless.

Guess what? You will always be frustrated because that's the nature of baseball. Ask the Cubs. Meanwhile, Loria will continue to do what he wants to do. He may or may not be a great baseball mind, but he is certainly a great fan and he owns it and he calls the shots. And you simmer in your rage.

Guess what else? After Loria comes Samson. So get used to your powerlessness and resultant rage.

Here's a fact. The odds of the Marlins winning a WS in any given year is 1 in 30, maybe less. That they haven't won anything since '03 is not surprising. That they won 2 WS in 7 years is shocking. Don't expect a repeat soon, or maybe ever.

Is it really too much to expect a well run organization? Do you think the Marlins are one? The guy you responded to seems to like Tampa. They haven't won a WS, so why do you think he's ignorant about the odds of winning?

Most, if not all, of the people here know the WS, and playoffs in general, are a crap shoot. Fans aren't demanding the Marlins win the WS; most of us would like to sniff the wild card/playoffs more than 2x in 19 years.

According to the PBP, they called him minutes after he landed back at Miami Airport.

Still fine since the braintrust is/was in NY I believe.

I would think he was coming back from his vacation in order to attend those meetings. To me firing someone over the phone when he is minutes from returning from his vacation in order to attend meetings is super low class. I do believe phones work in Spain. They could of fired him while he was still there so he could extend his vacation if he wanted. Low class would be firing him over the phone in the first place.

Loria was born and raised in NY. He and his business operations have been based there forever. He splits his time between NY and FL, but during the season he's mostly in FL, which is why he's at nearly every home game.

That he's in NY after our season ended isn't surprising in the least, in fact it was announced around the first of the month that there would be a FO meeting in NY about 3 weeks later. That after that meeting he called Guillan in Miami to tell him that his services were no longer required is likewise not the least bit surprising.

What would anyone have him do? Waste money flying around to tell someone he's fired?

Guillan has already gotten over it. He gets paid a lot of money to do nothing for 3 years.

These are the annual orginazational meetings that the manager is required to attend. So if what you are saying is true then apparently they called a secret meeting before the actual scheduled ones so they could all look each other in the eye to agree to fire him.

I doubt that.

So if what you are saying is true then apparently they called a secret meeting before the actual scheduled ones so they could all look each other in the eye to agree to fire him.

Exactly. Originally, the FO meeting was to be 10/25. Apparently, they met on 10/23 to decide what to do about Guillan, announced the result, and then had the scheduled meeting on 10/25 to decide their general direction, etc.

10/23 was "secret" to the extent that they didn't mention it beforehand. So what? Loria wants a meeting, Loria has a meeting. What else is new?

Okay. Guess I can kinda see that. But I don't know why they had to actually get together in person for it. And I stick by the thought of firing someone over the phone minutes after landing back in Miami off vacation so he could attend the scheduled meetings is low class.

I sure would like to hear what Ozzie really thinks about all this. Can't wait til he gets a new job and then just lets loose. I thought Fredi was pretty reserved in his assesment of our org this past year. Ozzie isn't exactly known for tempering his thoughts.

Loria might have had an earlier meeting than 10/25 in mind all along and suggested they all show up by 10/23, but we don't know that. The 10/23 "meeting" might very well have been via telephone -- I can't remember any published report explicitly saying it was face-to-face. Who knows? Only the FO. And they ain't talking about it.

As for how Guillan was notified, he wasn't inconvenienced outside of the fact that he needed to cancel his NY flight (unless he already knew, which is a possibility.)

I imagine they preferred he not hear about it on ESPN. OK, assuming that, what would you have Loria do? Waste even more money flying to Miami to fire a guy that he's already going to waste 7.5 million on? Send some miscellaneous Marlins employee to the airport to tell Guillan that Jeffrey fired him? That's even worse. At least Guillan heard it from the horse's mouth. Or, as some would maintain, the horse's ass.

Considering that Beinfest apparently always thought Guillan was the equivalent of "low class" or at least not professional, he might have pointed out that it would be fitting that it be done by telephone. I doubt any of them thought twice about it. I've fired a lot of people in my time and I wouldn't have.

I sure would like to hear what Ozzie really thinks about all this.

You're giving him too much credit for thinking.

I'm sure he'll go off half-cocked many dozens of times, and probably soon.

I swear to god Beinfest needs to be fired to redeem this move since you can't fire Loria. Just clean f***ing house out please. If it doesn't happen I'm going to kick Piazza31 square in his man parts next time I see him.

.

Beinfest needs to get his scouting dept in order, I believe it's gotta be amongst the worse 5 in the majors right now...He should be hanging on a thread as well

Beinfest is obviously not hanging by a thread nor is it likely he will be until the end of his contract in '15. Scouts? Who knows? They come and they go.

Failed draft picks can be argued until the cows come home, but it isn't going to change Loria's obvious choices about who he wants in the FO. If Beinfest survived the disaster that was 2012, he can probably survive anything.

Speaking of failed draft choices, Volstad was recently picked up by the Royals after being waived by the Cubs after yet another horrendous season -- even worse than his last season here. I remember him being interviewed by Hutton and Waltz just after he was drafted. He'll probably wind up in Japan.

the latest article from sun-sentinel really sheds a negative light on marlins front office: basically, beinfest and ownership create an environment where managers have a tough time succeeding. edwin rodriguez in particular had some interesting things to say.

I sure would like to hear what Ozzie really thinks about all this.

Yea, we get it. You don't like the guy.

You really think an airline ticket will break the bank? I wouldn't really expect Loria to do it. But one of the top 3 after him would have been appropriate. Samson, Beinfest, or Hill. It wasn't released to the public (ESPN) until after the firing, so I see no problem in doing it the right way. I've fired quite a few people in my time, also. But never over the phone, no matter what I thought of that person.
