December 28, 201213 yr I'm starting to get the impression that they have no intention on signing Stanton long term. My guess is that they won't try to negotiate anything this offseason and then they will wait and see how their young talent develops in 2013. When they learn that people like Hechavarria are not perennial all-stars, they will trade Stanton for prospects next offseason.
December 28, 201213 yr well they must've known once they made the Toronto trade that attendance was going to take a significant hit, but that in their eyes it was better in the short-term than spending it on players and crossing their fingers that they'd win a little more and the fans would show up. I still maintain that they can save some face in this. Lock up Stanton with a no-trade and go get a starting pitcher before the start of the season. I mean it's going to be bad but it doesn't have to be ghost-town bad. I don't think that any marginal spending on talent is going to have much of an impact on attendance. South Florida has shown repeatedly that winning is the only thing that really brings in the fans consistently and the Marlins are a long way away from being able to provide that.
December 28, 201213 yr The cannot save face. They didn't have to do what they did. They should have rebuilt by dumping only the bad contracts (Hanley, Reyes, Buck) and using the money saved to sign players good players like Swisher, Anibal and Pagan.
December 28, 201213 yr All 3 of those free agents were overpaid as it is, you would have wanted the Marlins to outbid their new teams for them? Also... Reyes' contract isn't bad, Buehrle's is.

For the same money Pagan and Sanchez may have signed here and those are fair contracts. Another option would have being Melky. Buehler's is bad but not terribly bad.. Reye's is a disaster.

I mean it's going to be bad but it doesn't have to be ghost-town bad. Why would they sign a sp worth people getting excited over? Trading the rotation (and lineup) shows they want to be extremely lean and hope to hit on their trades and soon to be major leaguers in the minors. Locking up stanton will be a start in proving some sort of competency. Fwiw I don't like NTC. I don't think they should be given out. Unfortunately our team has a lot to prove when it comes to keeping players. One player getting a NTC isn't going to change their image at all, but for Stanton...go for it. Its going to take many seasons of overpaying to get desired FAs to play here. Sucks.Well I'm aware they won't. I'm just saying it would be a gesture to the fans that they're still interested in being competitive during this rebuild. One could make the argument at least that they have this group of young players and A/B level prospects now (basically the entire organization above single-A) and they want to sort of see what they've got here before making another big splash into FA to see where the biggest needs are. If Cox hits .300 in AAA maybe you don't need to target a 3B. Can Solano actually stick? Will Marisnick hit? Will LoMo bomb? But at the same time this idea that you don't sign ANYONE of merit just because you're in rebuild mode is pretty depressing. Look I'm there already, I'm expecting an awful season. I'm just saying if I still lived down there I don't think I'd be buying tickets this upcoming season as it stands. But if they showed me some sign I'd probably still be on board. The Stanton thing goes without saying. Their no-trade policy doesn't bother me, I just think there are always exceptions to the rule and this is one of them.

Reye's is a disaster. How is Reyes' contract a disaster? Waaay too much money left for expected production. I think a team with a rotation and starting lineup including Buehrle, Johnson, Sanchez, Nolasco, Eovaldi, Brantly, Morrison, Infante, Stanton, Bonifacio, Pagan and Swisher would be fine. There's 7 proven good (or very good) players in there and a few young ones with potential that hopefully develop.

After an entire offseason of talk about cheap and Loria and jokes and fire sales and liars and on and on... after all the talk of "they'll never spend on this team", wouldn't it look nice to turn around and lock up Stanton and then sign a Sean Marcum or something to help bring along the young rotation? Are they going to make the playoffs because of it? Of course not. But jesus you are still trying to bring some fans to the ballpark here. Maybe they do make some signings next season - at this point I doubt it. And most fans would doubt it, there's no reason to think otherwise.
December 28, 201213 yr You guys keep going on the assumption that Stanton will sign here long term. By "long term" I mean past his FA eligibility. Right now I don't see that happening, no matter the amount or the length or the clauses put into it. I would be happy if he just signed a contract that takes him through his arbitration years. Guarantees him $$$ no matter what happens and probably saves the team $$$.
December 28, 201213 yr He's guaranteed money through his arbitration years anyways. Signing him until he's a free agent is what we've already got.

There is a benefit of buying out his arbitration years even if they don't extend him. It won't save a lot of money, but it will save some. The Marlins won't have to go through the arbitration process and they might be able to hedge against contract inflation.
December 28, 201213 yr I agree that attendance will be historically bad. Get ready to be on the Yahoo home page as we have been in years past with empty seats.

December 28, 201213 yr Yeah but they love to pick on us. It's usually the weekday 1:00 start while school is still in.
December 28, 201213 yr At least you and I can bring back an old tradition of ours maybe Max. Counting the fans by hand.
December 29, 201213 yr I can tell you I had a 20 game plan last year and I won't go to a single one this year.
December 29, 201213 yr I'm going to go to some games. Probably a dozen or so. Fuck Loria but I still love baseball and the marlins are my team. This.
December 29, 201213 yr I'm going to go to some games. Probably a dozen or so. Fuck Loria but I still love baseball and the marlins are my team. If I make my way to Miami this year, I might go to one. I will try to get a spot behind Loria's section so I can throw shit at him the whole time.
December 30, 201213 yr I can tell you I had a 20 game plan last year and I won't go to a single one this year. Had a full-81 game. No plans to go this year. Or next. Or any until Loria and Samson are long, long gone.

January 2, 201313 yr I got tickets to see the team play at Miller Park as a Christmas gift. Good thing because I certainly wouldn't pay to watch them this year.

We can also get welcomed to the park by name again. It'll be nice to kick back in our own section. Well, actually we were able to do that this past September too. A little preview.
