Curious, what would some of u consider a fair offer to Salty?

Please don't sign salty. If Navarro went for 2/8 salty is going to cost way too much. That .372 BABIP ain't going to happen next year.

The 2013 Navarro probably wasn't the real thing either, and he's been in a heavy platoon role for a while now. I think it's just the catching market right now. Sounding like AJ is probably getting around 8 per year too. Salty at least looks like he could catch a large majority of games. I think it's a risk sure but I don't want to yell overpaid about every player and then complain when they don't sign anyone. I'd be particularly happy to add some offense and not have to trade away good pitching prospects.

I for one hope we sign Salty. No matter what his flaws are he is still much better than anything we have here. He will be a big upgrade. We don't even have a future solution in the minors as Skipworth has never hit and Realmuto is heading down the same path. Who really cares for how much they sign him? It's not coming out of my pocket. Once the Marlins are done with him they will just ship him off regardless of his contract. They always find a way to move large contracts.

 

Also, if you are going to tell me that the money will be better invested somewhere else, then you haven't been paying attention to what's been going on here. They won't invest it in another position.

 

As far as Stanton is concerned that money won't go to a long term deal for him either. In order to have any chance of a long term deal with him we will have to make an attempt to spend some money and improve the ball club. This would be a small step in that direction. Signing Salty is a move at improving our weakest position and it makes sense to me.

This. And it's looking as if the original projections of 3/36 that MLB Trade Rumors had guessed is becoming less likely as time passes.

 

Admin, I don't think you're far off at 3/24, but I do think he will command slightly more than Ruiz did. I'm thinking at least 3/28 would be a fair number, and it's a lot less than I originally would have anticipated.

1. I agree 100%. We aren't paying for it, and we never get to see this club sign, and keep, FA's. Any time we get a chance to see that as fans, it's a plus, we should simply enjoy it.

 

2. Agreed again. They don't plan on, and don't really need to, invest in players at other positions. We have a long-term solution just about everywhere else (until the organization realizes Hech isn't the answer).

Dream scenario is doing all this, having the Red Sox re-sign Drew and then enticing them to part with Middlebrooks for Lomo . Then we've got something, all with a payroll less than 70M. Will then make it alot easier then to go to Stanton with offer in tow.

I agree with the two statements above. Get some guys battle playoff tested. Will rub off on Stanton, yelich, etc. I know polanco and Pierre were battle tested but these guys are FRESH off a title and what are we here for? To win titles, right? And the guys coming from Boston I'm sure want more and more and more. So yes, go off and get Napoli and salty.

I'd rather have Salty and LoMo over Lobaton and Loney. Just my opinion I guess, but if the Rays don't want Lobaton, that's not a good sign. They went out of their way to replace a younger, affordable catcher... makes you wonder why.
