Carlos Rodon Slipping: Would You Take Him?

Featured Replies

Can't go wrong but the Jose scare also wants me to avoid a player who throws really hard without perfect mechanics. I haven't watched Aiken and Kolek to know though.

Aiken has better mechanics, but Kolek has better pure stuff.

What happened with Jose has no bearing on how this team drafts. We were going to take a pitcher regardless given the strengths of this draft are the pitchers.

Kolek is more of a thrower than a pitcher. Aiken has not only better mechanics, but better pitchability by far. He has 4 plus pitches already, and is a year younger than Kolek. He's more polished, and with him being extremely young, he can see the MLB as early as 19. Not to mention he's a southpaw.

Where's everyone getting all this information on their mechanics?

Kolek has been quoted by multiple writers that his mechanics isn't too great, while Aiken hasn't recived the same concerns. So, by default, Aiken has better mechanics.

Marlins in a real good position in this draft. They have 4 picks in the TOP 50 and this supposedly a deep draft. You all know who I want with the second pick. But, the 3 subsequent picks will really help define our performance in this upcoming draft.

Law has the Marlins taking high school catcher Alex Jackson, after the Astros take Brady Aiken.

Law goes on to say the following:

"Analysis: The Marlins are on the same three names as Houston, plus Tyler Kolek, but the word around town is that Miami is focusing heavily on bats throughout the draft. The Fish have the most money in their draft pool of any team this year, with extra picks at 36 and 39 as well as their regular pick at 43, and could do just what Houston wants to do, cleaning up with as many as four first-round talents if they play their money right."

I wouldn't care if they take Jackson as long as they can sign him under slot and get him playing ASAP. I could see it happening.

I'd prefer Rodon, of course.

Well, that'd be interesting. Agree with Entendu. High school kid with a plus power bat and a cannon behind the plate, if I remember right? Two and a half years if they sign him immediately, could be starting in 2017, perhaps?

Eh, speculation. Let's see who we draft.

The thing is that this draft is deep, so we actually might end up with a very good haul because of all the money we've got. I'm not sure where Hoffman will drop to, but I think we could pick him up if he's available at 36.

If he is available at 36, you absolutely no doubt about it take him. Does he have another year of college available to where he can be a 5th year senior for 2016, or is this it?

He's a junior. I think he's signing this year. He'll probably fall even further by next year's draft.

Hmm. Like I said, he could do a fifth year senior thing and re enter draft in 2016.

Oh, I'm not really sure what that even is. You probably know more than me, it seems.

I don't, actually, but I remember hearing something about fifth-year senior where they can rehab injuries and take less courses or something, come back and take your senior year of the baseball career. But who knows?

That does make sense.

That's very rare for baseball, more common for football. Most college players that are any good are going their junior year. Waiting until you're a senior only prolongs your collegiate career and gives you less time to establish yourself professionally, and thus really hurts your prospect status in the draft.

Or maybe it helps Hoffman, considering he's going to take all of the next 12 months to rehab and won't get to play next season. Right now, he has no prospect status because of the injury. If he's still available at 36, throw the draft pick at him and see what happens. Wouldn't surprise me either way if he signs or goes to school.

I'd be incredibly upset if we took Jackson with Rodon still on the board. Jackson may be viewed as the best hitting prospect in this draft, but the difference between him as a hitting prospect and the top pitching prospects in this draft feels pretty sizable. There's a significant drop off between Rodon/Aiken/Kolek and hitters like Gatewood/Jackson.

Gotta take the pitcher. Our minors may be missing some hitters, but catcher seems fine with Realmuto breaking out this year, Barnes doing a damn fine job in A+, and Chad Wallach even hitting in Greensboro. That shouldn't be considered too much, but since Jackson would be three or four years away I say it's worth thinking about.

It's Rodon or Kolek for me. Aiken is fine simply because he's the most polished of the prep pitchers and is a southpaw.

When you get the second overall pick you have to take the most talented guys, and this year that is Rodon/Aiken/Kolek bar none.

If he slips to the supplemental round I'd love to grab Trea Turner (although he seems like a guy destined for the Yankees).

As history tells us, Top HS hitters are safer bets than HS pitchers in general, so I wouldn't mind Alex Jackson at #2, but Rodon >>. Three dominant seasons should not be overlooked. His wipeout slider is easily one of the best out pitch in draft history.
