May 16, 201412 yr GWhy do most mocks have the Marlins selecting Kolek over Aiken if both are still on the board? Most scouts have both players with similar ceiling with Aiken the higher floor.

Because they're guessing, and it's always fun to be 'the guy' that 'predicted' something unexpected. Hence Alex Jackson.
May 16, 201412 yr At this point for me it's Rodon or bust. Something tells me the Astros will come to their senses and select Rodon.
May 16, 201412 yr Author It's anybody's guess at this point. You could make a case for why the Astros would select any of the top 3 pitchers. I do think that if Rodon drops to 2, we'll take him. If not, then it could be Aiken, Kolek and (apparently now) Jackson.
May 16, 201412 yr I think some of these mock drafts are reflecting the perceived notion that the Marlins may be a little hesitant to invest so much in another young arm (considering the heightened injury risks).
May 16, 201412 yr BA's mock draft 2.0 has the Astros still taking Rondon #1 overall and now the Marlins selecting C/OF Alex Jackson Jackson must've done something impressive lately, for all these news outlets to start having him going 2nd overall seemingly out of nowhere.
May 17, 201412 yr Author Jackson must've done something impressive lately, for all these news outlets to start having him going 2nd overall seemingly out of nowhere. I read something about a barrage of power. He probably had a few multi HR games or something. It amazes me how fickle some of these experts can be. Do a few games really matter that much? I think track record should be much more important.
May 17, 201412 yr Its moreso about them thinking the Marlins will try and go underslot as much as possible while not sacrificing as much talent. Jacksons value is lower than Rodon/Aiken/Kolek while the talent disparity is almost negligible. Hitters are safer picks than pitchers generally and selecting a prep pitcher with "potential" is much more of gamble than of a prep hitter for the simple fact that pitchers are volatile. But still, Rodon >>

Do a few games really matter that much? I think track record should be much more important. The problem with track record is prep stars don't have one. By the time they get noticed it's Junior year, and scouts only have the opportunity to see them in 50 games, and they certainly aren't at all 50 games. Gotta go with your eyes, really.
May 17, 201412 yr GWhy do most mocks have the Marlins selecting Kolek over Aiken if both are still on the board? Most scouts have both players with similar ceiling with Aiken the higher floor. Per many scouts, they have not seen a fastball of Kolek's type since Nolan Ryan, that is going back 50 years
May 17, 201412 yr Andrew miller was compared to some great pitchers too. Its all speculation. Exactly. I used to get compared to Dwight Gooden. They weren't good comparisons, it was more like, "wow this kid sucks." Maybe I wasn't compared to Dwight Gooden at all. ...
May 17, 201412 yr Author Andrew miller was compared to some great pitchers too. Its all speculation. I think that a standard test for scouts should be to punch the potential draftee in the shoulder and see if he cries like a little girl. I think Andrew Miller probably wouldn't have been drafted had this simple test been carried out. Jacob Turner too.
May 18, 201412 yr I'm alright with Jackson. Building with pitching is a great idea, but at some point you need to work in high quality position players Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk

May 19, 201412 yr Jim Callis from MLB.com predicts Aiken to go to the Marlins as well as some other mocks, for example, this one: http://twinsdaily.com/content.php/2984-TwinsDaily-Mock-Draft-v-1-0
May 20, 201412 yr That mock has Hoffman still going 4th overall, lol. And he very well could. Never know. Granted, I don't see a team taking a guy they can't even let throw for a year at 4th overall, but still possible.
May 20, 201412 yr No, definitely not probable. Which is why one hopes that Hoffman will reach the 36th/39th/43rd pick. If so, and if he chooses to sign and is able to return to full health, imagine how much of a steal that could be. Now I don't see that happening, but, this injury does make that a small possibility.
May 25, 201412 yr I'm starting to see most mocks now have us selecting Alex Jackson. I think these sites are getting from Marlins sources that the Front Office favors Jackson over Rodon, with the 'Stros probably expected to take Aiken first. I'd definitely be upset if we pass on Rodon for what will eventually be a high school outfielder, but you never know how prospects will turn out so I can't trash it outright. For all we know Jackson becomes the next Joe Mauer. But we've all seen what Rodon can do, and even in a bad season he posted an ERA just over 2. The only reason I'd agree with the Marlins passing on Rodon is if the front office medically red flagged him. If it's based on the idea that Jackson is purely a better player than Rodon, I can't say I'd necessarily agree. Rodon will be major league ready within 2 to 2 and a half years as opposed to Jackson being 4 years at best, and he's the most mature pitching prospect to enter the draft since Strasburg. It would be a shame to see us have the chance to draft him and let him slip through our fingers.
May 25, 201412 yr Jackson has a good chance to remain a catcher...He really does field his position well...Has a plus plus plus arm. It would be entirely on the Marlins if they choose to convert him to another position
