Carlos Rodon Slipping: Would You Take Him?

Featured Replies

If they pick Gordon, I'll be very disappointed.

I wouldn't be disappointed because of all the arms we have, all the picks we have, etc because it means at least they're thinking beyond Adeiny. But he is not the second best player available.

You go for Rondon- if you don't get him you get the best college hitter /pitcher available I think.

The Marlins should lean towards a hitter due to their depth at SP if Rondon isn't there.

I can admit a few failures. Zack Cox is the obvious choice thus far, but being optimistic about Cox was more because there was nothing else at third to be optimistic about at all. Now that we have a few real options, it's easier to write that off. Chris Coghlan is another, for more of the same reason as Cox.

In both cases I was the person who primarily went up against you in those arguments, and I think you are being disingenuous now and are misrepresenting the points you've made in the past. I gave you tons of statistical data to show you why Cox and Coghlan were worthless sacks of shit and your responses to that suggest to me that you were optimistic about them for reasons other than the Marlins lack of depth.

Just when you think this thread was back on track, el penguino steps in.

I doubt they go Gordon. I think whoever wrote that article was just over thinking this.

Is anyone a fan of Tyler Beede?

I think the Astros are going to select Kolek. Rodon is no longer the clear-cut #1, and you could make a case for selecting Kolek #1 if you're any team. The Astros have the added bonus that he's in their backyard and, while there is no real logic behind it, I'm willing to bet they see that as a factor.

And maybe I've conceded these battles to you because I was wrong? I can admit that.

I'm not even sure Kolek is in the top 2 discussion for the Astros. All reports indicate that they're deciding between Rodon and Aiken (with Kolek the dark horse).

Don't know much at all about Gordon, but I'm still on the Rodon/Kolek train. If 'Stros pick Rodon, take Kolek and run away happy. If they take Kolek, grab Rodon and don't look back.

Agree 100%. Rodon is the BPA and would be extremely estatic if the Astros went with Kolek, who I think isn't as good as either RODON or AIKEN.

If they throw $500,000,000 at Selig to take all 3 as one pick, then f*** them!

In all seriousness, we can not lose in this draft, IMO.

I mean, we can. All these guys are unproven and we could see a future HOF superstar at pick 29, which will make us all cringe for a decade.

Well, yeah, you're right, and all it takes is bad mechanics on one pitch to end a career. So, yeah.

There's also a possibility of a future HOF superstar at pick 402. (Pujols)

Rodon is still striking out a lot of hitters but has an ugly 4-7 record He is not looking anything like a #1 overall pick right now, he still should be top 10

Who cares about win-loss? Felix Hernandez won a Cy Young award going 13-12 in 2010.

His ERA is under 2 and he has a K/9 over 10. He's fine.

That is why I said he is still top 10

He has the worse record of all pitchers of NC State (By Far)

That is because he is getting hit much more than ever before

He is a diminished pitcher, however still has an amazing slider. You cannot consider him as the # 1 overall anymore because

others are just a lot better than him right now. You draft on potential of course, not on what they have done but what they can do for your team down the road. However, why the loss of velocity? Except for his slider, his other pitches have regressed as well.

LHP Carlos Rodon, NC State: Coming into the spring, Rodon was not just the best prospect in the draft, he was arguably the best draft prospect since Bryce Harper in 2010. The 21-year-old was outstanding during his freshman and sophomore years, going 19-3 with a 2.33 ERA, 11.6 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9, but so far this spring he has looked much more human despite a 2.09 ERA, 10.5 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9. Rodon's fastball has reportedly sat more low-90s than mid-90s and both his changeup and curveball have regressed. His slider is a wipeout pitch and the single best pitch in the class, and one of the few reasons his stock has not fallen further. Rodon still figures to be a top five pick, but it wasn't long ago he was the slam dunk, no doubt about it choice for the Astros and the first overall selection.

With Jose's injury, I see the Marlins taking Rondon if available- maybe as a replacement if possible after some rest.

Wouldn't be surprised to see limited MILB time and then MLB debut. Or maybe he'll pull a Todd Van Poppel

OK, I don't usually do this, but, it's RODON, not RO(N)DON.

Sorry. Gosh.

The Extra N is for Negativity....

(Okay, okay :()

Still think a young prep arm is the best route to take.

With a missing link in our Rotation, taking the pitcher formerly incorrectly named Rondon may fill a void and give us a great 1 /2 when Jose is back.

Can't go wrong but the Jose scare also wants me to avoid a player who throws really hard without perfect mechanics. I haven't watched Aiken and Kolek to know though.
