Carlos Rodon Slipping: Would You Take Him?

If I see Rondon instead of Rodon one more time...

Seriously. Rondon is a fat reliever for Detroit.

What's the name of that Fat Reliever from Detroit you like Farva? I mean Bender?

Most of you are aware that no one has been following these kids through all the different website longer than me. Less than a week away from the draft everything is so topsy-turvy. This is probably one of the hardest draft to make any type of predictions, some scouts see it a weaker draft, but dammit, there are some arms in this draft. MLB.com is rating Kolek's fastball as an 80 pitch, that is something you never see. Even Rodon's slider which is one of the best ever rated (it is actually said that in the majors right now nobody has a better one), only gets a 70 rating. If anyone wonders why Aiken is at the top of so many scouts charts, it easily can be summarized this way, When they see Aiken they see Kershaw 2.0. I believe that Rodon has rallied enough to reclaim the #1 overall pick status...The Astros will likely call his name because he would be in the Rotation by 2016

Aiken may fall to 3 because I would imagine the Marlins would go with Kolek or Jackson (Most likely Kolek)

If Astros goes Rodon, Miami will go either Aiken or Jackson. Kolek is seen as a project as this point, while he has a good fastball, his secondary pitches are meh, and his mechanics doesn't look too good. Combine that with the growing TJ epidemic and teams will be more hesitant to go with hard throwers as opposed to more polished pitchers. Aiken already has 3 plus pitches with an improving cutter. We is the safer pick because he doesn't have the same concerns that Kolek has. With Jackson, the Marlins supposedly are in love with him, and his name has been appearing on more recent mock drafts than any other player.

I normally wouldn't disagree with you except you are wrong on one thing, Kolek is not a one trick pony, far from that. He actually has a 65 slider (slightly below Rodon level) and a 12-6 curveball as well. The problem with Kolek is still a matter of control, which is not entirely a bad thing . All young power pitchers ride that beast... That fastball gets into a batters head pretty quickly keeping them from digging it at the plate. The reason I say he is more of a Marlins type of pick is because he is signable, his upside is above every other pitcher in this draft and the Marlins are willing to have him mature in their farm system. I would love for them to get Rodon if he is left on the table by the Astros, However Aiken, Kolek and Jackson would seem to also have pretty amazing futures ahead of them...Yes Kolek is the least polished but he also seems to be the most gifted. That is solid clay to mold

I would like Rodon but it's not like Aiken or Jackson would be dissapointing either.

I'm just as excited about other three first day picks. Should be a great day to be a Marlins fan.

With the move today its obvious they are getting ready to draft a player at the top that will command a little more money:mischief2

Move today?

Law's third mock draft... more good news as we get closer.

Miami Marlins #2

Carlos Rodon

SCHOOL: NC State

HT: 6-4

WT: 235

POS: LHP

Analysis: The Marlins' mix seems to be Rodon, Brady Aiken, Alex Jackson and Tyler Kolek, probably in that order (although I'm not quite sure on that). They sent Pirates GM Neal Huntington one of their extra picks, No. 39 overall, as a birthday gift this week, even though his birthday is in February.

Thats really not good news.

I just dont see the appeal on Rodon. The other top arms are just as projectible, he is going to be expensive, and he is arguably among the greatest injury risks of top players in recent memory. Its a risk the Marlins cannot afford to take.

The injury risk and the high pitch count he dealt with are the biggest factors against taking him.

He's also the most major league ready guy in the draft, the Ace of a great NC State squad since his freshman year, and while his stuff might not be as "filthy" as a pitcher like Kolek, he's got great command, great movement on his off speed stuff, and his numbers have been consistently dominant at NC State. Even in what was deemed a bad season for him this year (should be noted a lot of that probably was because he was overused to no end) he posted a really good BB/K ratio and an ERA nearly in the 1's. He would've been the no doubt 1st overall pick and best starting pitching prospect since Strasburg if he didn't have some bad starts early in the season and wasn't forced to throw 130+ pitches every start.

Rodon is a pitcher who could probably come into the majors immediately and be a solid contributor. If we draft him he'd be in the majors likely a year to a year and a half before getting called up and has the potential to be the ace of most major league staffs (great #2 here). Even with the money issues (which don't seem that big since he'd probably want slightly over the slot), injury concerns, and the concern that he might not be as good of a prospect as originally thought, he's still a guy you HAVE to take at #2 and hope he develops into the pitcher he is capable of being.

I'm also a fan of Kolek, but Rodon's floor seems to be a #3 pitcher at the least if he doesn't get injured badly, and with a pitch limit (which the Marlins NEED to utilize if they draft him), he should be a really good starting pitcher at the next level.

Personally I prefer Aiken if the Astros take Rodon. But if they take Aiken, we just have to take Rodon. Either way we get a pitcher capable of being the #1 overall pick.

I personally still think Jackson is the best pick.

Not the best VALUE at #2 per se, but if he can continue to hit, he makes his own value.

And C/OF versatility can go a long way when looking at prospects potentially ahead of him.

But they'll go pitching, because it's the usual thing to do that early.

Last BA mock draft has the Marlins taking........Carlos Rodon with the #2 overall selection. Aiken is the #1 choice to Astros, Jackson the previous Marlin selection in prior mock ups slips to #6 with Mariners. They have the Rays taking Jacob Gatewood at #20
