According to fWAR, Giancarlo (4.6) is the 6th best position player in baseball so far this year behind only: Mike Trout Troy Tulowitzki Alex Gordon Yasiel Puig Josh Donaldson According to WPA (win probability added) Giancarlo (4.22) is third best, behind only: Mike Trout Andrew McCutchen According to wOBA (weighted on base average) he is ninth best, behind: Troy Tulowitzki Jose Abreu Mike Trout Yasiel Puig Edwin Encarnacion Andrew McCutchen Paul Goldschmidt Jose Bautista So what have we learned? 1. Mike Trout is ridiculous and probably not real. 2. Giancarlo Stanton is real, and really good. He can be frustrating (26% K%) but he's still really, really good at baseball and certainly not overrated. So, yes. Giancarlo could be better. He could be Mike Trout. Other than that, he really can't do a lot better than he's done this season, because no one can.
August 4, 201412 yr I think he absolutely can be better, and if he can eliminate those infuriating swings and force guys to pitch to him he will be a 130 RBI guy. Even now he should have 85-90 RBI.

If we had a mike trout type of guy, I would be beyond pissed that we traded him. Stanton not so much because everything you mentioned. If he had 100-110 RBI right now and he got traded, I would be infuriated. Now? Meh? Miguel Cabrera left too and we got over it. And he is way better than Stanton.

If he had 100-110 RBI right now and he got traded, I would be infuriated. Now? Meh? Miguel Cabrera left too and we got over it. And he is way better than Stanton. We haven't necessarily "gotten over" the Cabrera trade. We've dealt with it (because we have no choice) but we are still suffering from it. Some guys never learn to hit the slider. He has been largely successful without it. If guys are consistently on base in front of him, he'll get the rbi's. Maybe not at the Cabrera rate, but he also isn't as well rounded of a hitter as Cabrera, he just has more raw power. He is solid without the slider. If he learns to hit, we may end up with one of the best hitters in history. It would be nice, but don't count on it.

To be clear, I do agree with you on this. If he hasn't learned in 4 years, or the time in the minors before it, he probably won't. I don't have a whole lot of confidence in our player development either though.

If this is how it's going to be after extending him to a long contract and in your words "he probably won't" learn how to lay off the slider, then you need to trade him. Because if you sign him to a 5 year extension and "he probably won't" adapt, then it will be 5 years full of even more strikeouts plus the league realizing that all you need to get him out is just throw off speed. And to point something out, where is our hitting coach in all of this. If us fans know this problem, surely he does right?
August 4, 201412 yr Since Trout is part of this conversation... Anyone else think he's this generations Ken Griffey Jr.? He's a natural who can do it all and has no problem showing how much fun and love he has for the game. Hopefully he doesn't suffer the injuries though, his kind of talent doesn't come often.

August 4, 201412 yr Griffey Jr had the most beautiful swing I have ever seen As a kid, I loved Griffey's swing. I looked beautiful & smooth. The irritating thing was that maturing as a ball player, and then as a coach, realizing his swing wasn't as fundamentally sound as it looked, but he was such a freak of nature, & he had the hand-eye coordination to make up for it. I like watching Pujols. He has a pretty, & fundamentally sound swing. I also like that you can literally see every adjustment that he makes to it.
August 4, 201412 yr It's all in appearance. If some of the K's were just everyday groundouts to short there probably wouldn't be near the frustration level. People see the swing & miss and it touches a nerve. Groundout, eh okay sucks but he made contact. So really he's fine. He's not Miguel or Pujols at the plate but he's still awesome.
