Turner DFA, Flynn Up

Featured Replies

and as Dave Cameron from fangraphs noted on twitter, replacing Turner with Cosart seems like paying way too much attention to ERA. A lot of their other numbers are awfully close.

I'll give Cosart some credit, his ground ball rate is rather nice, which is what he needed to have in that Houston bandbox.

However, the other numbers are a little upsetting. Ah well.

Wow both pitchers were acquired in the same trade, can't say what Turner will do but he's certainly failed in his opportunities.

Basically every pitcher the Marlins get from the Tigers has sucked...

Cosart has better stuff than Turner, I think. I really don't know why Turner was ever a top prospect.

As much as Turner has sucked, his peripheral stats weren't horrible. He had no business in the rotation, but hiding him in the bullpen as a mop up guy might have been a decent move, especially since his spot will end up being for guys like Flynn and Penny.

For what it's worth, I think the DFA is dumb.

So do I, especially for a team that isn't in contention and just lost Alvarez.

DFAing Turner and giving his spot to Flynn (who sucks) is exactly the type of dumb move this front office would make.

I just don't want Turner on my team anymore.

Flynn deserved another shot at some point. Even if he's nothing more than a #5 at best it's still worth seeing what he can be.

They could've given Flynn a shot without DFA'ing Turner. I don't like the idea of giving up on young pitching.

First off, I don't believe anybody will claim Turner. I could definitely be wrong (given he's coming off a 3.74 ERA season I could easily see some team talking themselves into this year just being a bad year for Turner), but I just don't see it.

Turner's been given chance after chance after chance, and he time he's proven he just isn't very good. I understand not wanting to give up young pitching, but I and apparently now the Front Office don't view Turner as somebody who deserves to be on this team moving into the future.

It's amazing to consider Turner is just 23 years old given how long he's been in the majors though. Age notwithstanding, Turner's stuff just isn't good, and I don't see it ever being good enough to deserve a major league rotation spot again.

I just don't want Turner on my team anymore.

Flynn has done nothing to prove that he deserves another shot.

I also don't have a problem with the Turner DFA tho. The dude is really bad and nothing about him shows that he'll ever amount to anything.

Turner was drafted out of high school as a "power arm" believe it or not which is why he went so high. Here's the quick blurb after the Tigers drafted him:

Turner, a 6-foot-5, 205-pound workhorse pitcher, fits the kind of profile the Tigers covet. His power arm consistently fires fastballs in the mid- to upper-90s along with a solid curveball and a changeup he added to his arsenal in the last couple years.

That power arsenal produced an impressive round of statistics during Turner's high school career. He finished his high school season with a 7-2 record and an 0.60 ERA, striking out 113 batters over 58 1/3 innings with 13 walks. Among the individual games was a one-hit, 18-strikeout performance. Turner spent last summer on the U.S. under-18 national team.

Well Andrew Miller figured it out eventually - at least in a bullpen role. So yes everyone will.

Turner looks like he's pitching scared at this point. Like he expects every pitch is going to get hammered so he keeps it as far from the strike zone as possible. Then behind the count he gives in and it gets hammered.

Seems like there are other options they had without the DFA but whatever.

I don't hate any of this. Just because he was DFA doesn't mean he's done. It means if someone claims him, they work out a trade or pull him back and throw him in the pen. He's not going for nothing. If nobody claims him, GREAT, send him down and let Flynn sink or swim. That way next year you know whether to seriously consider Flynn for a roster spot or let him become the next Villanueva. Or Flynn goes down in a few days and the Brad Penny experience begins!

I would guess it was the combination of being a first rounder and being successful for the most part before being the centerpiece for Anibal Sanchez.

It was that mid 90s to upper 90s fastball coming out of prep school that made him a top prospect. Wonder where it went.

Guy got banned cause he was a previous user, I believe, that had been banned before.

Just found that hysterical. Oh bender, the lady who interviewed me called me back, said she called my references. Is this a good sign?

Yes, unless the references don't like you :p

Well the reference that I chose gave me a 4 across the board out of 5 when the interviewer called. My reference told me "she would know I'm lying if I have 5 all across the board" that actually makes sense. Also the movie theater one said the interviewer would need to talk to corporate to get an official reference etc etc. for $7.65 an hour why would I need to go through that hassle with the movie theater just to get a reference? Why couldn't the manager just tell her about my work ethic? So much gibberish.

Ever since the Stanton bashing began, I'm starting to think that Vince is SomethingFishy as well.

Why would he need an alias to say the things he already says?

Did he bash Stanton as well? Anywho, I'm looking forward to the game.

True "dat"

Actually, that's exactly what it means.

If someone claims him he's gone for nothing.
