June 10, 201511 yr 2.84 career ERA and an OK WHIP and a 2.2 WAR for his career. Here's my last point marlins FO draft strategy. Taking Kolek over Rodon.
June 10, 201511 yr To be fair, he's also a massive GB pitcher who limits HRs. Most GB pitchers don't have good K/BB. Those that do are elite (like Brandon Webb or Jonny Venters). The Marlins likely tweaked something with him when he came here and he's been a lot better here than with the pirates. His K/9 rose nearly 2.5 (5.5 to 7.9). His peripheral stats as a Marlin have been good. He hasn't been great this year thanks to a BABIP over .400. Not that I'm pro the trade. And I was very anti the trade when it happened with just how shit he was as a Pirate. But he's been fine as a Marlin.
June 10, 201511 yr We're criticizing the FO for getting guys they could have gotten later in the draft for the sole purpose of not having to pay them full slot $ This is something that doing this kind of strategy doesn't make sense on the Marlins side. You're taking a chance that by taking less talented people who save you a few bucks now, you are taking also A HUGE RISK that you literally have nothing left in a few years if they don't pan out. This could mean you will have to pay a lot of money, most likely in free-agency, to even put a team on the field that could be just mediocre because your overall talent level is so low. So Loria is saving a few million now and going to possibly pay A LOT in a few years. Seems to me to be a risk that doesn't favor Loria, and a very risky game to play.
June 10, 201511 yr Can we assume that whatever Loria saves now, it is for his pocket, because what happens in a few years will not be his concern-like he will sell the franchise and let the next shmoe deal with it.
June 10, 201511 yr Jim Callis of MLB.com pegs the Blue Jays‘ selection of Missouri State righty Jon Harris (29th overall) and the Rockies‘ choice of high school hurler Mike Nikorak (at 27) as two of the best three picks, joining Cameron. The biggest suprise, per Callis, was the Marlins‘ decision to grab young first baseman Josh Naylor in the 12th slot.
June 10, 201511 yr Jesus Christ we get it you don't like the pick. The mlb draft is as big of a crapshoot as anything in sports
June 10, 201511 yr Jesus Christ we get it you don't like the pick. The mlb draft is as big of a crapshoot as anything in sports That was Jim Callis, not me, and he didn't an offer an opinion on whether it was a good pick or not, just that it was the "biggest surprise"
June 10, 201511 yr That was Jim Callis, not me, and he didn't an offer an opinion on whether it was a good pick or not, just that it was the "biggest surprise" I'm aware of that. We get it though it was a surprise we took him. It's fucking stupid to critique an mlb draft pick the day after it happens. It will probably be too soon to figure it out in 4 years let alone right now

It will probably be too soon to figure it out in 4 years let alone right now I don't think it's stupid to critique something like this the day after it happens based on what we know today. Not one person here has said that Naylor will suck, they've only criticized the Marlins for taking such a low ranked player with such a high pick. And of course none of us have seen him play but he was ranked 59th by scouts and experts who have seen him play. Of course the draft is a crapshoot. You still do ur best to make an educated selection based on whatever scouting has already been done. By your strategy then every team with the number one pick should go for someone ranked 200th because the guy ranked 200 could end up a better player than the guy ranked 1st right? There's no way that's true.

He shot up draft boards latest because he played a tour for team canada against pros from the Dominican and hit something like 5 homers in 12 games
June 10, 201511 yr Again that is not accurate. He shot up draft boards latest because he played a tour for team canada against pros from the Dominican and hit something like 5 homers in 12 games What about my post wasn't accurate? That he was low ranked? So he shot up the rankings after those 12 games? Ok that's good. He still wasn't ranked at the top which is probably where the Marlins should have gone with the 12th pick. That's all people are saying.

That's all people are saying. and I'm saying those rankings are completely meaningless and I'm sure there are many draft boards among the 30 mlb teams and thousands of scouts that had him a lot higher.
June 10, 201511 yr We just drafted niners son. That poor bastard, I can only imagine the conversation, "So, Griffin do you want to sign with the Marlins?" " Hell NO! Dad they suck!" Anybody else notice the Marlins last draft selection?

June 11, 201511 yr Not sure if this was already discussed http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/mlb/miami-marlins/article23726224.html
