May 26, 201610 yr McCann is projected a top 6 C, also got a 2nd and 4th for Guddy and a 5th. Guddy is what you look for in a DMen though, 6-4, 220, big and physical. Not afraid to lay the lumber. Hope there's more to the story. i really hope we go after Yandle now.
May 26, 201610 yr So this isn't good http://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/1033368?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter
May 26, 201610 yr I love Guddy, but this does make the team better. Saves on cap space and we get a solid Top 6 player who is only 20 and still on ELC. McCann had 20 points on the bottom lines on a terrible Vancouver team in his rookie year. I can see him centering the 3rd line and Bjugs moving to wing.
May 26, 201610 yr Supposedly, McCann is a 2-way C. + a 2nd & a 4th and that's terrific value for Gudbranson. Sorry, but Gudbranson was always a little overrated by the fanbase. He's tough and physical, but that only wins so many games. With some more experience, Petrovic is basically the next Gudbranson. Petrovic probably has more potential offensively actually if the Islanders series is any indication. Gudbranson provided nothing offensively. Matheson will be here next year + didn't we sign one of the top d men in Sweden? I'm sure Tallon will also be interested in adding a D man in free agency. I'm happy with this move.
May 26, 201610 yr I mean value added for sure. We took their NHL ready top prospect. But did we need a C? Something smells iffy. Like, Bjugstad on the move because concussion scares iffy. Plus, the defense is incredibly thin now. Rumors are that Campbell will test free agency. Mitchell will probably retire. Gudbranson is gone. I do agree that Gudbranson vs. Petrovic is a good comparison and Petrovic does look like Gudbranson with offensive upside (though at the moment he's actually terrible). Matheson is a rookie. That leaves two reliable defenders and three holes. Worrisome for a team with an aging goalie. Either another trade is happening, or they're looking to make a free agent splash
May 26, 201610 yr Well they did bring back very good value in this trade. McCann has a lot of upside and they get a high 2nd rounder as well. They are obviously going to target defensemen in free agency where they can likely find a similar player to Gudbranson for less than what it would cost to keep him long term. I still think they re-sign Campbell as well.
May 26, 201610 yr Author Besides Petro being a turnstile defensively, his offense is not much to speak of either. He had 2 big goals in the playoffs and that's why people speak so sparkling about him all of a sudden. He has a lot to show me before I think I he'll be more than a borderline 6/7 defenseman. He doesn't move the puck quickly enough at all. So with that obviously I'm pissed they traded Gudbranson who could actually play some defense and move the puck in a timely manner. Petro has had 4 years to develop his game in the AHL and he still isn't that great, sounds more like Keaton Ellerby to me than someone who looks ready to play consistent tough minutes in the NHL. I'm guessing Gudbranson gets so much heat because he was a #3 overall pick. I couldn't care less where he was selected, he was a valuable defenseman to have back there on our defense. Maybe they make more moves but on the surface I'm not happy about this. Gudbranson did not hurt this team. Trading him means you have to make all kinds of moves to shore the lineup up, and who knows how that's going to work, if it does.
May 26, 201610 yr I agree with not caring where Gudbranson was drafted. I also agree with what you're saying about Petro. Regardless of how Gudbranson was indeed overvalued, I think that picking apart the D was the last thing we needed to do. Ekblad/Campbell/Kulikov/Gudbranson was a solid top 4. I suppose hitting the emergency button on an aging Campbell and the crappy PP might be in effect. Idk. Anyways. I'll reserve my criticism until FA has passed and the roster is set
May 26, 201610 yr Its sad because Gudbranson was a proud Panther and wanted to be here and captain this team. Now he has to go to another rebuild.
May 26, 201610 yr Gudbranson was not good at moving the puck. He was a physical player who improved defensively over the years. Really not saying much since he was terrible, himself, when he started. Value is value. It seems like we got good value for him. It seems like one of those moves where we have to wait and see what Tallon is going to do over the course of the offseason.
May 27, 201610 yr I'd still argue there's value for a guy like Gudbranson though. He was getting a lot better. His good skating was paying off. He could deliver responsible hits that weren't just unnecessarily big hits but also would disrupt the play. I don't necessarily agree that value is just value. A 2nd round pick is whatever. The prospect is great -- that I agree -- but where the hell is McCann supposed to play?

The prospect is great -- that I agree -- but where the hell is McCann supposed to play? I think he will play on the third line. Also, this is a solid draft and a 33rd overall pick is very good. I love Gudbranson and never would have thought they would trade him. Guy was happy to be here and its tough to be going to another semi-rebuild. But then again, were the Panthers really prepared to pay him $5-5.5 million a year, I'm not so sure about about that. In fact, his defensive metrics are not great and his offense for defenseman is among the worst in the league. I think everyone thought his offensive game would have developed more. Right now we have Ekblad, Kulikov, Matheson, Kampfer, Kindl, Hulstrom, and maybe McCoshen. I would say they definitely need to re-sign Campbell for 2 years and then go out and get a veteran defenseman.
May 28, 201610 yr Well, rumor has it they imagine McCann as a first line winger. So, there's that. Probably third line next season, yeah. I think they need at least two signs for defense.
May 29, 201610 yr Re-sign Campbell, make a decent FA splash in Goligoski, and sign a 4th line winger (Martin?) Huby Barkov Jagr Jokinen Trocheck Smith Crouse Bjugstad McCann Rau? Mac Martin? Goligoski Ekblad Matheson Kulikov Campbell Petro/Kampf Lu/Montoya I like this team tbh and we'll draft two more high potential prospects in the draft.
May 29, 201610 yr Despite how bad he looked, I would not be opposed to bringing Hudler back. he's a talented player. Plus we wasted a fucking 2nd round pick on him and I want him to be worth something.

May 29, 201610 yr I would say to sign either Campbell or Yandle and for a shutdown defenseman I think Roman Polak would be pretty good.
May 29, 201610 yr Is Crouse going to be ready next year? Most likely, but still has to prove it in training camp.
June 2, 201610 yr No full size pics yet but this is what I found. The reveal is live right now on panthers website.
