Mattingly and Dodgers "Part Ways"

Featured Replies

loria was also a part owner of the yankees at one time.

Wrong owner that was John Henry, unless I'm missing something

Mattingly is not a good manager, but much is being made of the fact that he really wasn't manager in LA anyway. Yasmani Grandal started several playoff games despite being an automatic out due to a shoulder injury. Why did he start? Because he's an excellent pitch framer, and the Dodgers' SABR-inclined front office loves pitch framing. So they basically forced Mattingly's hand. That's likely why Loria wants him in Miami. He's a big name but with experience being a yes man for the front office. The perfect Marlins fit.

Joe Maddon and Edwin Rodriguez are two of my more favorite managers in recent years. They make mistakes, sure, but I think they aren't as guilty of some of the dumb things that someone like Redmond or Mattingly would do.

I just think that many managers get their jobs for frivolous things like clubhouse leadership, being firey, mentoring young players, and most teams don't really vet how they manage situations. So I don't quite understand the disbelief over the possibility that many managers are just total shit.

The Marlins are one of the worst examples of this because they use these principles in many of their hires, but add one that's infinitely worse: the Yankees pedigree. It doesn't get any more mindless than that.

What sucks is that we had a great manager come up within our system named Edwin Rodriguez, and we just threw him away. He deserves a gig somewhere.

Loria does not play with this kind of stuff

considering how adamant Loria can be when he really wants a manager I wish he was more adamant for other things that we really need.

Loria takes the manager position more seriously than anything else it seems. Too bad his criteria for hiring one is completely idiotic.

I'd say his criteria for firing them is completely idiotic....he's hired some good ones.

None of the good ones have ever been fired. Only the bad ones were.

Translation: I loved Edwin. Everyone else sucked.

Girardi and Fredi (although not my favorite) have had good managerial careers.  McKeon was obviously a good hire.

Well, yeah Loria wants Mattingly but Loria also wanted Ozzie and to an extent Redmond and they were both ousted.
