A Look at the Free Agent Class

Featured Replies

Why is everyone so content on accepting these project players year in and out. Its stupid. This organzation is wasting the same amount of money going year to year signing these Mat Latos types. Now Fister is being mentioned. This doesnt work. We can't continue to seek miracles via free agency. We either become a BIG PLAYER, or sit back and watch the Dodgers, Yankees and Redsox take the wheel and lets develope from within like the core we had from 2003. Draft, scout, and develope players. This team has always been cheap, and now with an owner that CLEARLY cares more about art than this BUSINESS we are far getting worse and I've noticed for the past two years we have become accepting of this. Yes we spent before on Buerhrle, Jose Reyes etc, but we didnt do enough guys. This team in my opinion has improved their immediate front office although they still need to hire some worthy scouts. But this formula of going for bargains every offseason isnt working. Either spend BIG or develope players. We cant do both! Front office needs to build a plan.

Considering he will get about $15 million or there close to it is another reason to say no thanks.

As far as Gallardo goes, that's what he's worth unfortunately man, the league average is at 15.9 Million per year. I'd pass on him only if we are willing to go the extra miles to actually snag a top pitcher.

For that money I would go with Ian Kennedy

Why not go after Brett Anderson? Oh cause that'd be smart

Due to this injury history, the Marlins will not want to commit to 3-4 years on him.

I was thinking a 2 year deal for him but doyers just offered him a QO so there's that

I agree 100%. But Gallardo is a consistent starter. Not a game changer, but definitely a consistent pitcher, and worth the money.

Gallardo wouldn't bother me. Better bet than Fister. And if we're not getting any of the big names (rightfully so) Gallardo seems like a good enough "at least we got something" prize. Right now I have the fear that we get nothing in terms of starting pitching so it wouldn't take much to make me feel like we got something of an upgrade.

Guys that I would realistically like to sign: Zimmerman, Kazmir, Kennedy, Anderson, Burnett (for the lol's), Lackey.

my list is pretty similar...maybe swap zimmerman and kennedy

Kennedy was the starting pitcher when Fernandez got hurt in San Diego. No thanks

I say send someone to convince Mark Buehrle to pitch one more year so we can have at least one good signing.  He would be a solid 4

I like Gallardo before Ian Kenndy who will come cheaper but gallardo is a 3rd starter on any team.

Any word on who the front office is after?

  • The Marlins acknowledge that they haven’t done the best job of putting their payroll to use in building around their young core in recent years, as Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald writes. Pitching is the major need, according to president David Samson, who says he feels the organization has “three of the top ten players in baseball” — referring to Giancarlo StantonJose Fernandez, and Dee Gordon. Per Jackson, Miami would go up to $15MM a year on the right starting pitcher, though the team is more likely to spend in the $12MM to $15MM range. (He calls Yovani Gallardo an “interesting option in the high end of that range.”) Of course, trades are also possible, and Marcell Ozuna appears to represent a big chip with the organization seemingly unconvinced that he’s a piece worth keeping. Miami is chasing two pitchers, says Jackson, one of whom could come from a deal involving Ozuna.

Samson thinks Dee Gordon is a top-10 player in all of baseball. That's cute.

I don't think so. The Marlins actually believe this because they are backwards thinkers who place far too much emphasis on batting average and stolen bases.

Calling Gordon a top ten player in MLB is such a Marlins thing to do.
