May 19, 201610 yr This is literally a comment I've had to make to people six hundred times on this board. He's streaky. When he's bad he just sucks, and when he's good he's best in baseball. He literally just came off a stretch where he hit a home run nearly every other game. If you can't take Stanton when he struggles, you don't deserve him when he's playing well. Lol "you don't deserve him when he's playing well" stop it. We are talking about a guy who has been absolutely terrible. Not just terrible stat wise, like not even close. Yes he came off a great stretch. And guess what, he's still hitting below .230. The problem is, his great stretch is hitting 470 foot home runs for 2 weeks. Problem is, in this game, they all count the same. 470 or 398 wall scrapper, they are both the same. My worry has always been that he is a Mark Trumbo, Khris Davis type guy. Fluctuating from .230-.265 with HR making up too many of his XBH. I think what a lot of people, including myself, are upset with is this was tolerable in the past. He was our young superstar, he wasn't perfect, but everyone knew (thought) he would develop into a well rounded baseball killing machine. At the time, no one really focused on the low Avg, High K, Low XBH-HR, terrifying slumps because of the potential that was there. Now fast forward and he's getting paid like hes barry. I love being a Marlins fan and knowing we have the guy that can hit the ball literally out of any park in the league, and people stop to watch when hes there. But what I do hate is when it turns into a circus. Because at the end of the day they all count the same. So don't tell me it's ok that's he's 0-Infiniti because he hit those 2 500ft solo HR two weeks ago. Because it's not. This team needs him to develop into a more consistent hitter for them to get to where they want to be. Find a way to turn that K w/RISP to a fly ball or hell even a ground ball and just give your guys a shot. If ozuna can hit over .300 for any stretch of time, Stanton has the ability to as well. Get it done Big G
May 19, 201610 yr At the time, no one really focused on the low Avg, High K, Low XBH-HR, terrifying slumps because of the potential that was there. Now fast forward and he's getting paid like hes barry. I'll focus on the rest a bit later, but this statement really irked me. There's evidence on this very board (please check out every nny post in the Stanton megathread from 2010) where we all discuss his abilities as a hitter, which included high strikeout numbers, low averages and extraordinary power. He was a top prospect, but he's far exceeded the type of player anybody expected. The slumps existed when he was in Jupiter playing in high A ball. The slumps existed in every season he's ever been in. They will always be there. Think of it like you are in a relationship with a really awesome girlfriend. Imagine she's nearsighted and has been nearsighted since she was a teenager. Now you get upset with her every time she can't read a street sign from a distance when you're on the road. There's honestly no reason to get upset when she's told you she's nearsighted and has always struggled to read far away street signs. It's just a small flaw in her everyday life. The girlfriend also has tons of amazing attributes that led you into getting into a long term relationship with her and even have you thinking about marriage down the line. That girl is Stanton, who does a ton of amazing things right but has flaws that have always been there and will show themselves from time to time. And guess what is going to happen in the next week or two? He's going to start hitting again, and there's going to be posts about man crushes and how Stanton should be an All Star. It is all part of the cycle.
May 19, 201610 yr Are you saying that you know that his penis skin is a different color? I'm intrigued

It is all part of the cycle. When I said no one was focusing on his slumps, I was referring to his first 2 years when he was hitting 20-30 HR as a 20-21 year old. Sorry, should've made that more clear. As for the GF comparison, you can spare me on that. I understand the point, all that matters is the end of the year numbers. But what worries me, is that he will not get back to the .280 batting average. These are the few years he should be a complete player. Once again, I'm not saying he won't turn this around, in fact I believe what you said about him starting to hit again in the next two weeks is very accurate. But you have to wonder what causes a guy to go through streaks like this. I get its baseball, I know it's a game of streaks. But the lack of adjustments within a series irks me because of how much talent he has. Stanton is held to a different standard because he's a different type of player. A very very special player. The type of player who has the ability to never be below a .230 hitter are strike out 4 times against Jeremy Hellickson and Co. Is it a mental lapse? Is it cockiness and unwillingness to ask for help? Who knows. I'm not going to accuse him of that as I don't know. But what I do know is he is the leader of the team and I believe there is more to the fact that he's the #4 hitter, than the correlations between Stanton slumps and the team going on runs where they look lackadaisical and make mental mistakes. Anyway, phuck the phils and let's go sweep the Nats with Stanton hitting another bomb or two off the scoreboard.
May 19, 201610 yr Who the hell cares about batting average. This isn't 1985. I care. [emoji20] Sent from my SM-G900T using MarlinsBaseball.com mobile app

May 19, 201610 yr You're out of date man. Eh, the 80's were berry berry berry good to me. And, last I checked, the game is still played the same way so... Sent from my SM-G900T using MarlinsBaseball.com mobile app
May 19, 201610 yr Tony Gwynn (RIP)? Roberto Alomar? John Olerud? Edgar Martinez? Sent from my SM-G900T using MarlinsBaseball.com mobile app "The beauty of Martinez, however, is that he's not a machine. He is a sensitive, humble, hard-working hitter. He's a human being who has just survived the worst slump of his 10 big-league seasons. Last week he went hitless in five consecutive games. And before yesterday's 3 for 5, he had only five hits in his past 40 at-bats" Also, Edgar didn't become a real bad ass until his age 29 season. I could easily do the saem for the other 3 guys
May 20, 201610 yr Who the hell cares about batting average. This isn't 1985. Sorry bud, forgot you work in professional baseball. Name one successful baseball players, nonetheless #4 hitter than hit .220

Olerud was interesting in that the Mets wanted to him to be less consistent and more of a power hitter that really screwed him up. That caused him to be streaky until he went back to doing what he did best. But in doing this, it highlights how lost the art of hitting has become. It used to be striking was shameful now it's no big deal. Oh how I miss the 80's. Right, Dim? Sent from my SM-G900T using MarlinsBaseball.com mobile app
May 20, 201610 yr Fernandez 2 run single. Stanton 9 of 10 ABS with strikeouts. Please sit him tomorrow for ichiro. These dudes are professionals and if you strike out 9/10 times then you got issues. If ichiro got a hit in the first inning Tuesday night it could have been 2-0 out of the gate. But of course stanton will homer this weekend then we are back to square one. Stanton will use the BHS special tomorrow to avoid a benching for one game
May 20, 201610 yr Stanton's career avg is .267 I never said he was a .220 hitter, just saying that batting avg does give a general idea to how a hitter is producing, but does not paint the entire picture
