2016-17 Miami Heat Season Thread

Featured Replies

Talking to someone yesterday I realized the Wade news is gonna really weed out the casual heat fans now

... Those morons who pledged to be heat fans for life who are now running around saying they'll never watch the heat again. Wonderful die hard south Florida sports fans!

Fans are so dumb. I bet this team won't even be that bad next year and now they're going to have a ton of cap room heading into the next offseason with Pat Riley still calling the shots. Not the worst situation to be in.

I know this is the heat thread but since I'm talking about the same person it'll fit into the "fans are dumb" idea. This person who told me they'll never watch the heat again told me it was the same as what the Marlins did in 03... specifically that their favorite player was Pudge (mind you, she couldn't remember his name tho) and that he was traded away, when I reminded her that pudge was a free agent who wasn't traded away but chose to leave she said he chose to leave because they had just traded away the entire championship team. Do I have to explain how horribly incorrect that is?

People always forget that the team sucked the next two years with mostly the same core players before the team was really torn apart.

True but it's not even the quality of 04-05 that bothers me it's that people even forget that we tried for two more seasons to be competitive. People seem to think the 04 team had no one from 03 and was a losing squad. There was no fire sale 03-05, Lee Cabrera Beckett Willis Lowell Burnett Conine Gonzalez Castillo Pierre etc were all here, it was only Pudge, a free agent, who left after 03. Even then after the selling off you can argue the 05 "fire sale" was more necessary as in that team wasn't getting better. Bottom line the 03 team was not immediately traded off to save money like the 97 team was.

I like the signing of James Johnson and Wayne Ellington. Teams are overpaying the shit out of no name guys and we were able to scoop them for about what they were worth.

James Johnson is a beefier Bosh, big man who likes the outside shot, and Wayne Ellington was probably Brooklyns best player last year, torched the Heat when they met.

Theyre not loading up on long term deals which is a good sign. Save that money for next years offseason (Westbrook, Griffin, KD?)

There's very little risk in matching the TJ deal.  He's getting less than $6 million the next 2 years...and 2 years is a lifetime in the NBA.  The contract doesn't balloon until year 3.  He'll either be starting and worth it, traded, or amnestied (there will likely be an amnesty clause in the next CBA).

Of course I'd have preferred Wade had stayed, but I think this could be a fun team next year.  They are certainly signing players to play at the pace that Dragic and Spo have said they want to play.

I was against matching it at first but now I'm glad they did.

Thanks.  I just don't get the negative reaction to matching the deal.  No reason to develop the guy to this point and then let him walk for nothing.  It would be a waste of an asset.  He can still be traded in a year to a team with cap space and his contract will be the same structure the Nets would have had ($12.5 million a year).  Or best case, he becomes a quality starting SG...either way, it's better to have him than not...especially without Wade.

6 straight losses. Doesn't look like it'll get any better either.

And now theres a Whiteside for Thompson rumor lol. I do think Heat are big sellers during the deadline, not Whiteside, but Tragic Dragic. He's not very good.

NGL- I was hoping the Heat would be competitive enough this year to make the Playoffs.

When Bosh and James signed here in 2010, TOR and CLE became bottom feeders of the East and were 2nd and 3rd worst in overall record in the entire league.

The Heat still were a playoff team when James left.

They were still a playoff team when Bosh had to sit out last year, almost making the ECF.

I wanted them to be a playoff team after Wade.

As much as a Lottery Pick will help this team, The Heat are better served showing they can build a playoff team after all those departures so quickly to show free agents and to prove to them- "You put us over the top and make us true contenders".

I have faith in Riley, but a draft pick isn't how this team does business and succeeds. This team rebuilds with players who want to prove themselves and become better. A recent Herald Article showed why players make the decision to come here.

The hope is, this offseason the superstars will want to do the same.

I hope the next Marlins owner is taking note
