June 27, 20179 yr Wrong. You must not watch much Marlins baseball. He looked like a player that could be easily replaced by someone who is not that good! Which is exactly what happened. But Riddle doesn't cost $2 million a year. Hech was a ridiculously good defensive SS in 2015 and that was his peak. It's been downhill ever since. Hecht actually is paid 4.3 million I think.

Again, not saying I like Hech (I'm actually fine with the fact he was traded), but Riddle seems to have gained a fan club for no apparent reason. I also think some of the comments of Hech are unfair. He's not a top 5 worst player in all of baseball nor was he someone who was going to be DFA'd (as was just proven). Glove first shortstops usually have trade value especially when they're in their 20s & he's a top 5 defensive SS. He's also a putrid bat who can be replaced so it's not a big loss. But again, in context of who's worse, his replacement (Riddle) is one player who is worse. At the end of the day, we could use a SS. I wouldn't mind signing one in free agency.

If you believe Mike Hill, they traded Hech because Riddle was deserving of an opportunity. Then again, Mike Hill won't be here next year so we'll see.
June 28, 20179 yr I see nothing wrong with giving Riddle a prolonged opportunity even if Mike Hill was the one who said it. Hech had a 4 season long opportunity and he consistently proved he's not a major league caliber starter.
June 28, 20179 yr JT Riddle might (and probably will) be terrible. Adeiny Hechavarria is terrible. Take a chance, see if Riddle becomes a replacement level player (which would be a significant upgrade over Hech) and if not, find a new SS when the team is ready to compete (2050?)
