Nationals Recently "Checked In" on J.T. Realmuto

Featured Replies

Only a team desperate for catching would pay the price Miami is asking for (if any team would) and I can't think of another contending team with assets and a need at catcher.

One could say that the Astros would be a good fit.  The Yankees also considering that Sanchez is garbage on defense.  Both of those systems are still deep.

The Braves also.  Their catchers aren't young and they are over achieving anyway.

There we go, thanks. I don't see either of those two teams parting with top kids, then again it seems no team will.

Great,we keep JT long term.

Honestly, This isn't the worst idea. A few weeks ago I thought we had to move Realmuto, but he is on a pace that he might get votes for MVP. If he wins it, we could sign him, or maybe even get more in the offseason.

I believe Jeter wants to keep him long term, but it's just up to JT,if he willing to stay here I believe Jeter would extension him ASAP.

We won't be able to keep him long-term. He's an FA after the 2021 season, in which he will be 30. If we extend him, it'll have to be a for-life extension (unlikely), or he would have to be an idiot because every year he delays free agency after 30, he's most likely going to lose money in the long run.

JT is going through arbitration next year, and he's already making $2.9M this year. He doesn't need an extension. They waited too long to extend him.

If they offer him a big extension this off-season he would definitely consider it. Easy for you to say you'd walk away from a large amount of guaranteed money but most people wouldn't. Anything can change in 1 day and he'd be set for life while he isn't yet.

Furthermore, you could do the opposite of Loria, and spread the contract out evenly and pay him more in the earlier years than he'd be making in arbitration.

I don't know what you're talking about.  Something along the lines of 5/100 (1:$5M, 2:$8M, 3:$17M, 4:$30M, 5:$40M)  that's solid - ask Jeffrey Loria!

or instead, you could give him 5/120 with a pay structure like scherzer where it pays out in 10/120 and in 7 years he can get another contract.

Once the money is guaranteed, I doubt he'd care when he gets it (as foolish as it may be from a financial standpoint). It's why see these deferred contracts being accepted.

The best shot of extending him is offering him a very long term contract.

I don't mind the deferred payments, as long as your profitable. The last thing you want is for a players salary to cripple you for years after he's gone.  As long as it makes business sense, absolutely!

Just to make sure we're clear, I was 100% kidding about that pay structure.

I actually would love to see them have the ability to front-load, so that we get a bargain on the back end of the contract, while acquiring more talent. We obviously have to have the funds to do so, but you can also only do that with a certain type a player.

Why would he wait two years after his contract to get another one?

I think he means the new contract starts after the next two years, I guess eating 5 of his FA years?

Yeah, it'll be a lot more than 5/120 in that case.

Right. He isn't giving you 5 FA years. You either get 0-1 or 2 if you're extremely luckily, or 7+, assuming the AAV is reasonable.

I just mistyped? Lol

I meant he could get a new contract after the contract was up, and he would still get paid. This would save money over time, because with inflation you would be paying him less. It would also be less of a hindrance on the payroll.
