Nationals Recently "Checked In" on J.T. Realmuto

Just accept nothing less and hope they get desperate.

Exactly. Someone will bite. It isn't even a go-for-it-now rental. He'll be under control for cheap over 2 more seasons. It's ridiculous to set low expectations.

We aren't competing for a few years, and JT may just be hot. I'd rather cash in now instead of waiting to see if 2020-2021 JT is as good as 2018 JT.

For what it’s worth, he’s not really having a career year. He’s just a good player.

Teams pay ransoms for lesser players than JT. I don't understand how we can't get top prospects back for him

Those days are over. Teams are valuing top prospects more than ever now.

Only because you have more teams tanking, so the pool of interested clubs has shrunk. There's no way that a good GM damages his chances of winning it all today because he wants a higher chance of possibly being able to compete tomorrow.

JT has two years of control beyond this year and may be the best catcher in baseball right now. You trade your top prospect for a guy like that, especially if your window to compete is closing and you have nothing to show for it.

Re-sign JT and build around him. Period. Those guys are hard to find. He can be a championship cornerstone like Posey, Molina, Posada or Pudge.

Yeah and possibly cost themselves Harper in the process.

It's unbelievable. For a team with such regular season success yet no postseason success over the last decade (almost), they don't appear to have a sense of urgency. Harper next year, and then they slowly start losing key players every year thereafter.

Has anyone heard what Nationals fans are saying about this? I wonder how many are with Rizzo or how many would rather them pay the high cost for Realmuto.

Harper is hurting them this year.  I'd be really wary if I was the GM that was making an offer for him if they let him go to FA after this season.  He is so up and down from season to season.  I guess next year he should rebound once again?  I sure as shit wouldn't be offering a 400mil contract like a lot of folks were predicting prior to this season.  If I were a fan of the Nats i'd probably want to see them trade for JT - from a non-fan perspective I don't think it would be worth it as how many wins would JT really add to that team?

If JT gives them even 3 more wins that might literally be the difference maker for them. They just seem like they're always so close yet so far that a couple games more might be all they need. It'd be hard to part with their top pieces but if I'm a Nats fan I think you have to take a chance here. Remember when they played it safe and didn't let Strasburg pitch in the postseason? Nats fans are probably tired of things like that and might want them to gamble here. As us Marlins fans can tell you, just winning one world series can make a world of difference for the fanbase.

As for Harper it's gonna be very interesting to see how he does in free agency. You know he's gonna get big money but he might become a huge mistake for whether signs him too.

FA singing would always be a gamble.

I know but I'm saying that Harper has been so good and so well known and basically a hot commodity that he could break free agent signing records and then also become the biggest bust as well. This is more than a regular free agent gamble is my point.

I'm just sure it would be a gamble that much bigger than Chen's…

This is from a few days ago but Mike Lowell speaking on MLB Network said Realmuto is worth keeping but he's also so good that they might be overwhelmed by a trade offer and then it'd be interesting to see what they do there.

I know we've already said this stuff but I just find this so fascinating because I can't think of a Marlins player in recent memory who is so perfectly on the line between worth keeping and worth shopping for a big haul. He isn't garbage to get rid of but he also wouldn't be traded away for scraps either.

Selfishly I want JT here long term but I almost don't think I can be upset if they do trade him for a mega haul.

Its essentially up to JT.  If he is at all willling to re-sign, you do it even if its an overpay.  If not, you just gotta trade him as much as it sucks
