Nationals Recently "Checked In" on J.T. Realmuto

Featured Replies

I assume the conversation went something like this:

"Hey, J.T., how are you?"

"I'm okay, having a good season even though my team isn't."

"Cool, everything else good? Family okay?"

"Yeah, all good man, thanks for asking."

"Alright buddy, see you July 5"

Yea, their checking in to see if they can give us their lowest rated minor league pitcher or someone down their prospect line for an all star type catcher instead of top prospects-hard to get rid of the reputation as suckers.  They balked at considering Soto or Robles.  To me, one of those must be in the offer.  Damn, they gave away their best prospects in 2016 for Adam Eaton.

With J T playing so well, they must know that the price hasn't come down.  The fact that they are checking in again could bode well for us.  I think they are in denial and they are trying to come to grips with the reality that they need J T to get to the next level.

However, they are afraid to lose Soto or Roble because Harper is most likely gone next year.  They have to just swallow hard a pay the price!  This might be their Adrian Gonzalez moment and we could be lucky enough to cash in.   At this point I'm thinking Robles (I think Soto has passed Robles as untouchable), Kieboom plus.

I believe he's untouchable in Jeter's mind and we would lock up him long term ASAP.

I hope you're right.  But ASAP is now - there's really nothing stopping it.  Find out what the asking price is, and meet it...

I think we'd see an attitude shift with the fan base too.

Do not budge on the asking price, make them pay up at the deadline if they want him.

The see Hill and they offering mirror and stones for JT. can't blame the nationals , they see an inept GM that are trying to stick it to

Soto and Kieboom would be a really nice package or Robles + Kieboom. We really need an MLB ready shortstop. Rojas is a super utility guy and Riddle just isn't it.

We also need to send Brinson down and let Maybin play CF, Anderson to 3B and keep Dietrich in LF. They can probably start doing that when Garrett Cooper comes back.

The conversation starts with Robles + Kieboom. JT is one of the best players at a difficult position to fill. No way he scores just one top prospect unless it's THE top prospect in baseball

Attitude shift in the fanbase? Maybe from fans that are actually paying attention but in general either the fanbase won't even notice or they'll just make a smarmy comment about Jeter trying to save money and hurt the team or something like "they'll still trade him in the offseason so why bother?"

They have to start somewhere, though.  They're only going to overcome that image by making moves like that (signing JT) and sticking with them and building around him.

JT Realmuto is arguably the best catcher in baseball right now.

We need to sell high. He would bring back a haul.

Or we could just keep a good player in his prime for a change.

So Do we want to trade him or sign him? How much would it cost to keep him around long term (7+ years) and would we get more output from 3 guys(Robles/Soto, Kiebloom, unknown). I don't know that it would be a bad move to at least listen. If they start with those 2, and we get one more. I might listen. Robles/Soto are thought to be guys in the same vain as Harper. At worst Yelich level talents. Kiebloom is looking to be a solid bat/glove. We would probably speed up our time table by a year with those two guys. If we can get a low level Pitcher like Crowe. I say we should take it. It takes some pressure off Brinson (who I still think will be a good major leaguer). Plus it gives Isan Diaz a little less pressure to be a super star. It would hurt, but I just couldn't turn away a deal like that.

We’re not getting a player like Soto or Robles for Realmuto.

I’d rather keep him.

The Marlins would probably do a deal like that.  Problem is the Nationals don't want to include either Soto or Robles.  I believe they offered something like Kieboom, Fedde, Severino, and Michael Taylor.  I could be wrong but that's what I recall reading.  I wouldn't deal J T for that.

Exactly

I really don't understand why we can't get a prospect of that caliber for a known comodity like J T Realmuto.  Catcher is a much more difficult position to fill than OF.  Plus, plenty of uber prospects flame out.  That's why they are prospects.  Chances are that not all three of Acuna, Soto, and Robles are going to pan out like the Braves and Nats hope.  J T on the other hand is a young stud at a premium position.

The problem is that teams are putting a premium on their prospects more than ever.  Look at last off season.  Teams are afraid of committing dollars to players over the age of 30.  This means their prospects are that much more important to them.  3 years ago teams were getting boat loads of talent for rentals like Chapman and Miller.  I  think those days are over.  All FO's  are too well informed now.

Because he's not worth it or because the nats won't agree?

That's true.  I momentarily forgot that bulk of our fanbase is completely unreasonable.

Exactly why you keep him.  Flip outfielders and pitchers all day - you keep catchers.

We aren't competing for a few years, and JT may just be hot. I'd rather cash in now instead of waiting to see if 2020-2021 JT is as good as 2018 JT.

Teams pay ransoms for lesser players than JT. I don't understand how we can't get top prospects back for him
