*Far Out* Draft Talk

*This is bored Marlins watching me, lmk what you guys think though*

I've been thinking a lot about the future for the Marlins (clearly not much to see right now) and was interested in knowing what a potential top-5 pick next year could get for us. First, we should look at what we targeted last year and how our system looks right now. Of our top 10 prospects, we have 6 Pitchers (4R,2L), and 4 position players. In the top 10 we have 5 projected to be promoted in or by 2019, 1 in 2020, and 4 past that. In the next year or two, we'll see a lot of change here from promotions mainly. Sandy Alacantra/Monte Harrison/Nick Neidert/Jorge Guzman/Isan Diaz/Edward Cabrera are the prospects that'll most likely be promoted "soon". That's our 4 top pitching prospects, after the next 2 (Braxton Garret and Trevor Rogers) we have Jordan Yamato checking in at #16. This'll become a clear need soon but in the first round, especially the top 5, we should draft BPA no matter what. Knowing this and also from our recent draft, we'll be targeting "Up The Middle" players that are athletic. C/P/2B/SS/CF. I feel after our top pick we'll focus heavily on replenishing the pitching depth we need going forward. With the potential top-5 pick though that's not the case, the top talent coming out next year is exactly what we've been targeting.

*I take some info from Baseball America that's in a free article*

Some key players that can go top-5 we might take

-Bobby Witt Jr. , SS, Oklahoma Commit

This excerpt is from Baseball America and gives you a good idea of Bobby "He’s fundamentally sound up the middle, with a quick exchange and the requisite enough arm strength to make the plays in the hole. He’s got a quick right-handed swing with the ability to impact the baseball to all fields. Witt’s speed gives him a fifth tool that has flashed above average or better, producing double-plus home-to-first times in the 4.00-to-4.10 range". From all reports he could go as high as one, he's definitely somebody we WANT and could be a star for whatever team drafts him.

-C.J. Abrams, SS, Blessed Trinity HS, Roswell, Ga.

Baseball America excerpt as well "At least a plus-plus runner, Abrams is a lefthanded-hitting shortstop with the defensive skills to stick at the position and fantastic feel for the barrel offensively. His speed allows him to rack up extra bases but he hasn’t shown big-time raw power. Defensively, Abrams has a quick exchange, advanced body control, and above-average range." another top "Up The Middle" prospect that could be what Jeter and the FO like.

-Brennan Malone, RHP, Porter Ridge HS, Indian Trail, N.C.

Another excerpt "Malone stood out as an underclassman during the showcase circuit last summer, throwing in the low 90s with good feel for spinning a breaking ball. His fastball has touched as high as 97 mph early this summer, but he also has impressive secondaries in an 83-85 mph fading changeup and mid-70s curveball with 12-to-6 break. Both could become plus offerings down the line." This sounds like a top of the order game breaking pitcher to me. If you take a pitcher high next year it has to be this guy.

There is currently a very low chance we'll be drafting Bobby Witt Jr as it stands now. Most outlets have him as the top draft prospect currently, and entail that he's going Number 1 barring anything unexpected happening. The Orioles also just lost Manny Machado and it wouldn't surprise me if they swing for the fences with the first pick and take the highest potential player like he is. For that reason, I won't be mentioning him as much going forward with any updates.

A decent amount of the research I gathered for this update comes from these FREE article:

https://2080baseball.com/draft-spotlight/adley-rutschman/

https://www.mlb.com/news/early-2019-mock-mlb-draft/c-280269044

Here's a small excerpt that pretty much sums up what I was saying earlier "Oregon State catcher Adley Rutschman, the Most Outstanding Player at the 2018 College World Series, and Colleyville (Texas) Heritage High shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., the son of the 16-year big leaguer and No. 3 overall selection in the 1985 Draft, are the leading candidates to go No. 1 overall at this point.". Adley Rutschman is somebody that we hope can fall to us at 4th currently, I really would love for the Marlins to draft him as I see him being a high-impact Catcher as J.T. is. Another potential Marlin draftee I feel we should learn more about is Here's something a bit upsetting lol "Miami hasn't picked that early since 2014, when it used the No. 2 choice on Tyler Kolek.".

-Adley Rutschman, C, Oregon State

"Rutschman has been a standout this spring for one of the better offenses in the country, slashing .380/.479/.577 over 262 plate appearances for the Beavers. The Oregon State backstop brings to the plate a simple, balanced set-up with quick hands, an advanced approach and excellent feel for the barrel, regularly squaring up the ball. His medium-wide, strong build plays well in the box, as Rutschman displays easy pull power already with a chance to grow into at least average in-game pop at maturity." and "Behind the dish Rutschman moves well, displaying solid side-to-side movement and athletic actions. He has soft, strong hands that allow him to excel at presentation, sticking the corners and the low strike with impressive regularity."

-Shea Langeliers, C, Baylor

"If Rutschman is the top catcher in the class, Langeliers might not be far behind. He has excellent catch-and-throw skills with outstanding pop times to second. At the plate, Langeliers is quick to the ball and can drive it to all fields, with double-digit home runs in each of his first two seasons. "

Clearly, Adley will most likely be the more Offensive skilled Catcher while Shea will be the more defensive orientated one. Personally, I'd love both as I feel they have higher potential than Will Banfield and believe Will is more of a solid catcher than future standout. My belief is the Marlins should trade J.T. to the highest bidder and sign a short-term catcher till Will Banfield is ready. A platoon of one of these two Catchers and Will could be an amazing duo for a potential contender. We'll have to wait till winter though before I can tell what are future is at the position.

Overall these are some of the guys I think we'll be targeting and hopefully add one of them to our team. Each has huge potential and could be stars down the road. I plan on adding more players and other draft stuff to this thread and we come closer obviously. Thanks for reading and have any ideas you guys might have!

I don't usually follow high school prospects, but I live about 20 minutes from Roswell. Ga.  I might need to go watch him play this year.

They will draft a nobody and save money.

Weird how they paid over slot for some of their picks in the 2018 draft. It is almost like money wasn't a factor in the picks. And some of the so-called "sure things" they didn't pick, signed for less with other teams.

I guess we will see what happens.

Haha!  Sometimes facts get in the way of a good narrative.

And reality sometimes gets stifled by the cliche of being a "true fan."

Maybe you forget that Loria no more be the owner of this team.

Didn't forget. My memory is also longer than a goldfish.

  • 1 month later...

I dought Bobby Witt will be there at #4 so I’m not going to follow him as much but there are four names that are very interesting and two are in position of need (catcher).

Adley Rutschman - C

Shea Langeliers - C

Riley Greene - OF

Hunter Barco - LHP

If Adley and Shea do not have a decline season and are sitting there at #4, you are probably looking at Realmuto’s replacement. Greene is intriguing, some talent evaluators have him going #1.

I think everybody knows Bobby Witt Jr. was the son of Bobby Witt…
