Another thing, there's still time for them to make that last offer whether JT and his agent wanna hear it or not. Offer him 5/90 just to be safe and then trade him when he turns that down.

What I'm more concerned about is the optics of it - like I said above, right now it looks like we low-balled and then didn't try further once we were turned down. Throw out your best offer and make him turn it down (or not respond). Then that's your narrative going forward - we offered a fair deal, they weren't willing to negotiate. Right now its "well, we offered a deal....that counts, right?"

December 4, 20187 yr MLB.com has learned that the Marlins have been willing -- as a starting point in talks -- to strike a five- or six-year deal with Realmuto that would -- after covering his remaining two arbitration seasons -- have an average annual value (AAV) during his would-be free-agent years (starting in 2021) of at least $16 million. That's in the range of the $16.4 million AAV that Russell Martin got when he signed with the Blue Jays. Martin signed a five-year, $82 million deal with Toronto in 2015. McCann previously signed for five years and $85 million with the Yankees -- a deal that ran from 2014-18, and had an AAV of $17 million. Miami was prepared to place Realmuto in the Martin-McCann range.

Should be 20 for those years.
December 4, 20187 yr 5/$70 is where they should have started, not the "third" offer. 5/$80 is the sweet spot for everyone, which has been a broken record for half a year. Maybe you go to $85 to pay an incompetence Marlins front office tax for offering such BS initial offers (and fighting him in arbitration last year for $600k), but past that it's, no thanks. He's not worth more than that and trade him to a team he will sign that exact deal with.

December 4, 20187 yr this soroka/riley shit sounds like rehashed news tho Atlanta Braves It’s been reported that, in July, the Marlins turned down an offer of RHP Mike Soroka (No. 25 on the Top 100) and 3B Austin Riley (No. 28) for Realmuto, though I’m told that package was never offered. If we’re gonna say Realmuto is worth $70 million or so, a two-player package needs to be some multiple above that number, since the Marlins would prefer all of that value in one player. What’s the right number, though? Maybe 20% higher? We’ll research past trades and try to nail that down, but this offer is right about there. The Braves have nine more prospects in our Top 115 beyond these two and Pache, so the ammunition is clearly there. I would imagine the price may be just a bit higher, for the market-based reasons to which I alluded earlier, so a solid third piece like LHP Kyle Muller should get it done. That said, it’s possible the Braves have deemed that, or even Soroka-plus-Riley, to be too much.
