November 29, 20187 yr I do agree with this like 200% though. I'm tired of casual fans coming up to me with false narratives that they heard somewhere and I have to correct them and then I think why isn't the correct information more prominent? South Florida should be made very aware that Realmuto doesn't want to sign an extension here. That's a broader societal problem - "reporters" go for big flashy inflammatory headlines/stories, rather than actually reporting the information at hand and letting people make their own opinion. Which article would an average person be more likely to click/read? MARLINS TRADE ANOTHER ALL STAR, YEAR AFTER TRADING AWAY BACK-TO-BACK MVPS or MARLINS TRADE REALMUTO AFTER HE TURNS DOWN EXTENSION And furthermore, which would a person be more likely to click if they weren't looking for information on the issue and just randomly came across it.
November 29, 20187 yr Marlins to sign some people to decent contracts, and have them finish out deals with the team. Yeah.
November 29, 20187 yr Reality is, even that won't work. The only thing that will change that is for the Marlins to sign some people to decent contracts, and have them finish out deals with the team. You’re right, but the best version of what the Marlins can be would never do this. In fact no team really wants to do this anymore. Those contracts do happen for a select few and its those generational talents that eventually become a burden to their team at the end of their contracts: Cabrera in Detroit, Rodriguez in New York, Pujols in LA. It is so seldom that you see a player perform up to retirement the way David Ortiz did that you cannot come to expect it. The Cardinals made the smart decision to allow Pujols to go to LA. It was certainly a sad day for Cardinals fans but I think it was largely understood because the Cardinals were in the playoffs every year and have recent World Series championships. I can’t envision a version of the Marlins where they are so flush with cash they can afford to hand out a contract to a HOF caliber player that is backloaded and then have that player play out his remaining days with the team. I think a more reasonable “high bar” (if that makes sense…..) is St. Louis. Where you continuously bring up players that perform. Sign free agents that make contributions, and avoid giving out that Pujols/Cabrera/Rodriguez type contract. Pujols left St. Louis after his age 31 season and promptly saw his production plummet. Ortiz on the other hand was dominant in his 30s. Some risks pay off and other don’t. Boston can afford the risk. Miami never will, but that doesn’t mean they can’t become a great competitive organization. It is just that fans will have to understand the nature of contracts in MLB, how players age, and how teams are now shifting the way they construct rosters. I don’t expect people at large to understand any of this. Which article would an average person be more likely to click/read? Honestly, articles or headlines won’t even suffice. There has to be a general narrative surrounding the player to drive public opinion on the street. Like a LeBron James “Decision” type event where there are multiple offers in front of the guy and he reaches out and grabs one. Short of that I don’t expect anyone to get it. Fans create their own narrative now and they pull other people into the nets they cast online.

Sorry, I didn't clarify - when I was talking about the contracts, I wasn't meaning a mega Stanton type deal - I just meant free agents/extensions in general - they can't sign people and then trade them away a year in anymore - that's more what I meant. Obviously if they're way out of it and want to get value out of someone, that's different. It'd be nice to see a non-backloaded deal for a change too haha.
November 29, 20187 yr Miami thinks its the 1960's and these teams have the rights to players forever. Curt Flood opened the door, and Miami's been too ignorant to look outside and see how the free agent sweepstakes changed the game. That is probably part of it. I think another part of it is that a huge group of people are conditioned to look at a commitment to a player through the lens of an NFL fan. We all know that the NFL doesn’t guarantee contracts but MLB does. I don’t think the complainer crowd draws these distinctions. They see the Dolphins committing huge dollars to Ndamukong Suh one year and then cutting ties with him three years later and they don’t realize that only half of it was guaranteed, whereas the entirety of Giancarlo’s contract was guaranteed. Furthermore the way the Heat have managed their roster flies in the face of how a rationale baseball front office would construct their organization. Secondly, I think there is such a large number of people down here was a different favorite team and they treat the Marlins as a convenient local mistress in the event they become entertaining. So for that person it is pretty easy to pay little attention and then criticize them from their perch whenever a negative headline appears. We lack a large vocal dedicated core. Because we lack that the narrative gets pushed in bad directions

So basically if they offered JT 4-5 years and he was willing to accept it and he played happily ever after into his early 30s. One of those? Yea, seeing some of those deals happen would be nice. I’m not convinced people would notice though. Obviously we are in this predicament because JT wont sign, AND JT wont sign because of what happened last year. HOWEVER if we can set aside those facts for one second and pretend like the trades from last winter never happened and we are sitting here discussing a JT Realmuto trade (with JT still refusing to sign an extension for whatever reason) I don’t think there would be as much outrage. I’ll take it a step further….if the Marlins had only traded Ozuna and Yelich it wouldn’t have gotten the attention. People notice flashy things like trading a guy who hits 59 450 foot home runs, or trading things in mass quantities.

Because we lack that the narrative gets pushed in bad directions Yup, I do believe this. And it's also a component of why we don't have much of a fanbase - people that have moved here stuck with the team of where they're from, and didn't switch to the Marlins - and aside from 2 years, it's not like the team has given people a reason to switch/become fans, either. I see. So basically if they offered JT 4-5 years and he was willing to accept it and he played happily ever after into his early 30s. One of those? But you're not giving people an easy thing to point to as "look, Marlins"
November 29, 20187 yr You're right, they probably wouldn't notice. But you're not giving people an easy thing to point to as "look, Marlins" You’re right I’m not. But that goes back to the small core of fans thing. In any mid-sized baseball centric market with a nice sized fervent core of fans, people would be tuned into the goings on with a player like Realmuto
November 29, 20187 yr Not good… Realmuto is more of a game-changer for a contending team than Martin and Cervelli are.

November 29, 20187 yr So according to that, he wanted Posey's deal - 9/$167M So basically there's the grand canyon between our offer and them. They still need to publicly share their offer when they trade him.
November 29, 20187 yr So according to that, he wanted Posey's deal - 9/$167M Posey was 8/167 and he was an MVP and a World Champion. JT's request is absurd. He'll earn about $20 million combined in arby the next two seasons so he wanted 6/140+

He'll earn about $20 million combined in arby the next two seasons so he wanted 6/140+ Ah, the 9th year is a club option. --- Regardless, sounds like they're far apart - trade him and shout from the rooftops what our offer was.

November 29, 20187 yr https://fancredsports.com/articles/jon-heyman-astros-dodgers-yankees-all-showing-in This is the exact kind of bullshit we were discussing this morning. The notion that Realmuto does not want to be here despite the team wanting to retain him is not expressly addressed. They say “they’re far apart” which implies something entirely different
November 29, 20187 yr It's stupid for JT to request Posey's contract. I'm sure that contract has Posey's signature already on it. JT should probably request a new contract for himself.
November 30, 20187 yr https://fancredsports.com/articles/jon-heyman-astros-dodgers-yankees-all-showing-in Did anyone else think this article was written by some sort of non-human device/algorithm? It's so choppy and awkward. P.S. I tried to word this to avoid possible puns. Have at it, @SilverBullet and @SonOfJack.
November 30, 20187 yr "Not much has been written or said about this, but weeks ago the Marlins and Realmuto’s camp talked about a possible extension, and they were so far apart that a trade seems even likelier than before." I'm only hope this team didn't lowball him.
November 30, 20187 yr So according to that, he wanted Posey's deal - 9/$167M So basically there's the grand canyon between our offer and them. They still need to publicly share their offer when they trade him. I say give it to him. Give him 9 and 167. But also put in the contract he has to catch for 110 games a season, and he has to win awards to get bonuses. If he doesn't catch 110 games in a season, it triggers a club option for the remaining 3 years of the deal. He thinks he's Posey, let him prove it. Give him the money. I bet he'll still turn down 9 and 167 though.
