April 8, 20197 yr From Frisaro today... Since Spring Training, the Marlins have had discussions with clubs about their controllable relievers, like Adam Conley and Drew Steckenrider. Miami has explored attaching Chen to any possible deal for either of them, and others. Look for that type of situation to resurface as we get closer to the July 31 Trade Deadline. Even if another club picked up as much as, say, $10 million of Chen’s remaining salary, that means Miami would have that money to spend elsewhere. What would you guys think about packaging Chen with Conley or Steckenrider in a trade?
April 8, 20197 yr I’m fine with this IF they spend that money elsewhere. If they just pocket it, fuck that
April 8, 20197 yr If it gets that money off the books, go for it! Chen is an albatross and Steck and Conley both have stuff but are completely unreliable. Take that money and use it to lock up young core pieces.
April 8, 20197 yr I’m fine with this IF they spend that money elsewhere. If they just pocket it, fuck that That money won't get spent elsewhere. We're not close enough to contention to start spending. And anybody in our core that we're interested in locking up long-term won't cost the kind of money that we need to clear up Chen for. Chen is just a bad contract that needs to play out as a Marlin (as badly as that hurts). Any young relievers that get traded need to be traded without Chen diluting their value. We need as much value in return as possible.
April 8, 20197 yr There’s no reason to throw away a good young player to dump chen’s deal if the money won’t be reinvested. If they do it just to pad Sherman’s pockets, I will be the first to ridicule them.
April 8, 20197 yr As others have said, any deal that doesn’t prioritize talent over salary relief is a failure before it begins. With that being said, Chen is scheduled to make 42 million between 2019 & 2020 (oof). Luckily, he likely won’t qualify for the 2022 option due to being moved to the bullpen (required to throw 180IP in 2019 or 360IP in 2019 + 2020).
April 8, 20197 yr It'd be a very Loria move to attach one of them to Chen just to dump the money. Yes, but what real options do they have? As long as they spend it, it's all good.
April 8, 20197 yr Yes, but what real options do they have? As long as they spend it, it's all good. Uh. Keep the asset/trade that guy by himself, retaining his full value (and getting far more in return), and chalk up the Chen money as a sunk cost that you can't/won't get rid of?
April 8, 20197 yr Uh. Keep the asset/trade that guy by himself, retaining his full value (and getting far more in return), and chalk up the Chen money as a sunk cost that you can't/won't get rid of? That won't be a happy move for them.
April 8, 20197 yr That won't be a happy move for them. I don't say they'd be happy doing it, but that's the right move.
April 8, 20197 yr I don't say they'd be happy doing it, but that's the right move. What I'm trying to say is that they won't do it.
April 8, 20197 yr Author To be fair, lining Sherman's pockets with Chen's contract money would be a better use of that money than paying to Chen to pitch in actual games.
April 8, 20197 yr To be fair, lining Sherman's pockets with Chen's contract money would be a better use of that money than paying to Chen to pitch in actual games. Yeah but it would also mean losing Conley or steck for nothing.
April 8, 20197 yr Author Yeah but it would also mean losing Conley or steck for nothing. Please refrain from using logic that can ruin my jokes.
April 9, 20197 yr for some reason i see Conley going elsewhere and turning into Andrew Miller 2.0 how badass would that be on a jersey? Miller 2.0 i'd buy one
April 9, 20197 yr I’m fine with this IF they spend that money elsewhere. If they just pocket it, fuck that do you kiss your dogs with that mouth ?
April 9, 20197 yr I'd be for it if they'd use that extra money to make Hollandsworth "disappear" LMAO! Here here! I am with that as well. This ownership has shown the ability so far to spend money in the areas needed. I think it would be a good move to at least attach Conley in the deal. Steckenrider would have more of the value especially if he starts picking up saves this year. Heck, even pay $15 million of that contract should be good. That still gives you $5-7 million in savings over the remainder of the contract.
April 9, 20197 yr I'd be for it if they'd use that extra money to make Hollandsworth "disappear" I know a guy...
