We were 40-40 when we went to Boston. Lost the first game 25-8, won the next game 10-9 and finished the season 91-71. Pinch-hitter Jason Varitek doubled with one out, but he was doubled up for the game's final out when Juan Pierre made a diving catch of Johnny Damon's liner and threw it to second. Nomar Garciaparra hit a two-run homer in the fourth and added a two-run double in the sixth to make it 6-2 and chase Tommy Phelps. Pierre had four hits, a walk and two stolen bases for Florida. Kapler, released by Colorado on June 19, signed with the Red Sox on Tuesday and went to the minors to play himself into shape. He went 3-for-6 in two minor league games and showed no rust when he arrived at Fenway on Saturday, either. He doubled in the third, singled in the fourth and tripled in the first run in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie. Kapler doubled in two more when he came up for a second time in the sixth, then struck out in his last at-bat, in the eighth. Red Sox starter Tim Wakefield left with a 9-6 lead in the eighth after giving up Encarnacion's homer. After that game the Marlins were 41-41 on the season. What has he done this year that really indicated this guy needs to be on the team in any position?
