Which I contend is the strategy all along. Sherman has $$$ in his eyes from those new TV and naming rights contracts. Remember even if they sign someone, there is a better than 50% cchance they are traded at or just before the deadline

Sure, but eventually you run out of guys to pivot to.

Not when they can just claim they feel good about some prospects on the farm who they feel are now ready to contribute on a daily basis and after thoroughly exploring all avenues and trade options deemed it was better for the club to "see what these prospects can do at the big league level so they know what they have"

Did I nail the impending press release after they fail to sign anyone again?

Is it impossible to have both Reynolds and Castellanos ?

I wish you could be the GM.

Have a heart! We'd actually look forward to this signing period every year for a change!

I wonder if Reynolds plus Conforto is being considered.

I would love Reynolds and would consider that a win but Reynolds plus Castellanos/Conforto/maybe someone else would feel like a real big win and a real statement and a real step forward.

It would be nice.

Phillies getting Castellanos would be another kick in the junk. This team is so effing pathetic. This may be the first year ever i dont choose to buy mlb.tv

Not being willing to go to a 20mil AAV on anyone is just not sustainable. Assuming Barry's sources are right.

I doubt the validity of that. I don't think there is any way they can seriously believe they can win without handing out big contracts at some point. If they do? Well then they can kiss any chance of winning a World Series goodbye.

My guess is they just don't want to go to those lengths to sign Castellanos, which is understandable.

Like I said before, bottom 5 in payroll.  If Sherman can't afford to pay for big name FAs with a small payroll, then he needs to GTFO and sell the team to someone who has the money and is willing to spend it.  Still have about 3 weeks yet but my expectations are low.

He can't play 3 OF spots. Wrong. Try again. Not a center fielder. Terrible since starter of 2018. Might be passable in a corner.

@MarlinsLou please tell me what I should be thinking about Conforto.

He's fine for me but not my favorite  - a moderate DH upgrade over Aguilar/Cooper with some upside. Schwarber kind of deal tops (a little more). He seems like a safe .800+ OPS bat with some upside in a peak year to get to high .800s.

He'll never see the field with Sanchez, Bleday, Burdick, real CF, and Garcia all superior defensive options longterm. They'd still need a CF but this is a positive longterm DH and let's you easily trade a corner OF as part of CF package.

Sell the team to someone who will know what's necessary to be a MLB owner these days

Yes - spend money to make money. Maybe these guys should look at the Heat (trade Jimmy Butler), Panthers (Sign Bobrovsky), Canes (Sign Cristobal), or Dolphins (making lots of moves and had 1 down year in a rebuild.... even if they still need a tackle).

Your starting rotation is going to cost like $10-15m TOTAL each year for 2022 and 2023. All 5 of them. You can afford a bat!!!!!!!!!! What's the issue!!!!!!!!

It should be. They can afford it on a bottom 7 payroll and have the prospects to do it.

And if they are smart and move some guys (Aguilar/Cooper, Bass), they can get another FA too and be will under $90m.

Only way he'll sell is if he gets forced out by the other owners for whatever reason. Again, he wants the fans to show before he spends and it's just not going to work that way until an owner FINALLY invests in fielding a real team for a few years.

Yup.  Sherman needs to invest and take the financial hit for a few years while the team becomes highly competitive.  Then the disgruntled fan base will come back.  He expects us to buy tickets and merch for an inferior product.  It sucks, but out of principle, I refuse to buy any hats or jerseys until he spends on the team.  Gotta give to get.

Speaking of  merch, the online team store has been lacking in product.  Don't know if it's because of supply issues / Covid or he isn't putting much money into that either

You really think Bruce Sherman runs the MLB Shop?

Being cheap.

Does Sherman realize he will be perceived as a hero if he:

Signs Castellanos

Trades for Reynolds or Laureano/Kemp package (Call it Meyer, Cabrera, Burdick, and a nice 4th piece). This keeps Pablo

Dump Aguilar/Cooper and Bass to clear payroll

Sign Kenley or some other good arm

Team is $90 million and the top 5 prospects are Watson, Eury, Sixto, Bleday, and Salas.

He's a hero. It's that easy. Hero.
