Marte to Mets... 4 years $78 Million

Featured Replies

It is really mind boggling to watch this front office simultaneously walk around with their chests out while being completely ineffective. The fact they were so willing to sit on their hands last season while spouting a desire to win...makes this offseason even more disgusting.

None of what they do matters other then winning and they are no closer to that today.

I'm so sick of Jeter's potato head and Ng's super cool fist bumping attitude. I'd really like to know what the plan actually is and what will make a player fit into their plan and make the front office "go get them." Alex Jackson was in your plans? Brinson is in your plans?Great...you paid Rojas and Sandy (which they haven't done yet)...and fine they didn't want Marte because he "didn't fit into their plan" (which is a lie...because they made offers to him)...but now go do something that makes this team better...its been two years of low risk moves that have amounted to nothing except treading water without any consequence.

I wonder if they came up with a calculation that measured the extra year against facing Marte 20 times each season? How much is that worth? Add in an inexperienced gutted outfield and subtract a faithless fanbase and carry the two.

Mish's tweet is simultaneously promising and disappointing.

So they ultimately WERE willing to offer what it would've taken to sign him, but just way too late?

No I don't think that's how he meant it. He meant if the Marlins gave him what he wanted but they never did even though he gave them countless chances to do it. Poor guy really wanted to stay here and Sherman let it get away. I'm specifically targeting Sherman for this one because if the negotiations kept going that tells me Ng and Jeter wanted him on the team but that the only thing that didn't click was the terms of the offer, that's on Sherman. Jeter and Ng wouldn't have been so persistent if they didn't really want him.

Actually now that I read it again, he's saying they didn't raise it enough last night to beat the Mets but that last night's raised offer would have been enough for the extension over the summer.

I'm not understanding your point.   Clearly they wanted him, and their max offer would have gotten it done had it been offered pre-trade, but was offered way too late.

It lies with Sherman only if he was the one saying "no" "no" "no" to various amounts of money to offer.   If it was Ng trying to consistently lowball him to get a "deal" when she had approval for higher, then that's on her.

Correct - that's what I was saying - it would've gotten it done, but was way too late in the game for it.

This boils down to a mixture of incompetence and penny pinching.

I understand the argument of trying to get the best deal/lowest figure for the team.  But when you're so low/not even in the ballpark to begin negotiations, it's likely not going anywhere.

If they were ultimately willing to pay the price it would've taken to keep him (based on Mish's tweet), then it seems like the issue lies with Ng's negotiating/lowballing more than Sherman's willingness to open the checkbook.

Or Sherman raised the amount he was willing to spend, who knows in the end.

Either way, they fucked up as usual.

I love Marte and would have liked to sign him even at his age. Very poorly handled by Miami because they probably could have gotten him for 3 years with an option a few weeks ago.

I’ll take Castellanos and Correa but I’m probably dreaming.

Definitely dreaming on Correa. Castellanos is a maybe.

Correa they have never been linked to. Castellanos they apparently have interest in, but who knows what they are willing to pay for him.

Yeah, I guess that's true.  Depends on the level of communication I guess.  But, he doesn't know much about contract value/is hands off.........so if Ng tells him "$40M will get it done" and he says "ok", when $40M is nowhere near what it'll take is that on him or her?

But flip side of the coin is if he says "don't spend over 50M on a single guy" then yeah, that's on him.  We'll likely never know for sure.

Ha.  They couldn't even sign Marte.....I have zero hopes of Castellanos or especially Correa at this point.  I'd love to have a surprise, but I don't see it.

If we still did/do board awards, I nominate this for best post. Well done, @Major-Minor

Well, it sounds like they didn't beat the Mets offer regardless, as I assume he'd have signed with us if they had.  But yes, I am saying why didn't they offer their higher amount earlier (whether pre trade or early in the offseason).

I read Mish as saying that the Marlins most recent offer would have gotten him to sign if they had offered it during the season.

This is pathetic and disappointing. I’m mildly depressed, and I really didn’t see that emotional impact happening. I guess I had gotten my hopes up, but this one took a lot out of me, and my brain is flirting with ideas of finally releasing this team. If this proves to be their MO — and you know, fool me once, fool me twice, that whole thing — who knows how long it will be until a new ownership that might give us hope of real spending and a competitive product…

Sigh. At least we have the Heat, Panthers, and Tyler Van Dyke.
