Kim Ng - after first full year

I am just tired of Kim Ng being infallible. I was very happy they hired her based on her credentials. But some people here need to start being honest and realize she just may not be doing a good job. Only some things can be blamed on ownership, such as being cheap on contracts. Poor roster construction, prospect hoarding, that's more on the GM. We were all very quick to blame Hill when it was his job, but she seems to get a consistent pass from some.

Yeah. I was willing to give her a try there but the seeming inability to try to fix more than one thing at a time and letting everyone just sign elsewhere while attempting to fix CF ... yeesh. At least the bullpen got a last second upgrade, once it was apparent to them that CF wasn't happening.

Oh well. 😞 Just another typical Marlins year I guess.

At least it'll be fun on the days everyone on offense is clicking? I mean we could see five homers in a row from Soler, Cooper, Sanchez, Aguilar, and Garcia. That'd be fun!

Maybe we'll get to see some of the kids as they get called up and cheer for any success they achieve. Maybe.

If they really want to go the route of the Rays, why don't they just try to hire one of their former GM ? the Rays seems would be good forever and the Marlins seems would be bad forever ……

yep, they do have a lot of power in the lineup so there are gonna be those days where they absolutely annihilate other teams - same as last year was.  Loads and loads of games where they score 3 runs or less and then there will be a couple games where they get 12+ runs and then it's back to 7-8 games in a row where it's 3 runs or less.

Yeah, it's early, but we all saw what you said - they didn't fix anything outside of the catcher position really and she seemed to not be able to do more than one thing at a time for some reason.  Once she decided not to give up her prized prospects we magically got some bullpen help within a few days.  It was really frigging weird to see a GM operate on only one thing at a time. I'm kinda pissed they have 15mil a season committed to Avisail for 4 years now too. I hated the deal then and I hate the deal now.  With as cheap as Sherman is that is going to cripple their chances at bringing in someone that helps.

Just sucks that it feels like another lost year and it's only the first week. Why do I even bother caring so much is what's going through my mind these days.

i think most of us are there right now because there were some very clear needs going into the offseason that we all knew would really propel the team and aside from getting a catcher - ignored all of it.  Then you factor in seeing how relatively little it would have cost them to bring in a Correa and a Bryant to give some major upgrades to the lineup and even a vet starter like Rodon to help (some guys would have been moved like Aguilar for example to balance Sherman's skinflint payroll ideal).  But yeah, with all the money he makes before even playing a single game, they could have been a legit WS contender had they not just wasted money on Garcia and Soler and instead invested it lineup changing players.  Even after bringing in Correa and Bryant (buh-bye BA) and Rodon they could have also STILL traded for Reynolds.  Imagine that as a team rolling out day 1.  Seriously.  But I guess Sherman feels he'll get better value from having 2 guys for the price of 1 Correa because 2 must be better than 1 right?

As a fan since the '92 Expansion Draft, I've been slowly getting to the point where I've been thinking "why should I be a fan anymore"? Other than the fluke 2020 season, this team has hardly been relevant much since 2003.  I posted before that this offseason would impact how I feel about this team going forward.  They did just enough that I said "OK.  Let's see how tis season goes."  The trade deadline will probably be the final dagger if they don't make big enough moves to be a contender.  If this season is a failure, the Marlins will still be my team, but I'll probably stop watching games and maybe once in a while peak at the standings, but that's about it.  4 games in and this season already feels like the same old bullshit with Don still managing and a reluctance to spend money or trade prospects to get big elite impact bats...

I think we just need to temper our expectations.  I'm in the minority, but I'm of the mind set that we don't blow out the farm system yet for one piece.  If it would make us legit WS contenders, I would be more open to the idea, but to just make the playoffs?  Making the playoffs is cool, but it's not the main objective.

This rebuild was set back by the horrible Yelich trade.  Not only did we miss on getting a Superstar,  but we missed out on even getting a useful piece that we can control for a few years on the cheap.  The Stanton trade was a salary dump, but we also didn't get anything back there. Still have some hope that Devers can at the very least be useful.  The Realmuto trade is also trending in the wrong direction.  So, with all of the crap we got back, there's no way we can stick to that 5 year timeline.

Instead of doom and gloom, let's focus on the positives.  We have a great farm system with plenty of talent coming up soon. I can't wait to see Watkins, Salas, Cappe, etc. get to the show. They should be fun to watch.  We've drafted well, and we've spent money on IFA (just like the FO promised) in order to build the farm.

We also signed our ACE to a contract extension.  Again, the front office promised they would lock up our talent, and not trade them when they get expensive. So far so good.

On the field, our SP staff is insane.  They are all good and young and controllable.  Also, if they ever need to trade Pablo for more offense, that's a great tradeable asset.

There's also the emergence of Jazz and Jesus.  Two young players who have come up and are starting to live up to their Potential. They are both very exciting to watch.  We do need to lock them up long term, ASAP.

In summation, so what if this teams window for contention is moved back one season?  As long as the long term goal is to continue to grow so that we can have a sustainable contender, I'm all in.

For many years, this franchise has had an identity of being a "cheap" franchise.  How often have they signed an elite impact bat or gone out and gotten an elite pitcher to make the rotation even better than what it is?  They can't keep sitting back waiting for the farm or getting bargain bin players hoping they will fill needs.  If there is a big time player out there that makes a team even better, a successful franchise spends and gets the guy.  Just too many losing seasons since 2003, and quite frankly, I'm tired of the bullshit.  Don should have been fired already.  Anderson should have been upgraded already.  The Marlins come across as a mismanaged organization and that starts with ownership and the GM.  It's been 5 years and I am tired of the excuses.  This team should have a winner on the field by now with big name players on the field and the great farm system filling needs when needed and not bearing the full weight of turning this team around.

This franchise has a bad identity and culture of losing.  If Sherman can't or refuses to spend money (even after the tv and stadium deals) then he needs to sell and get out.  He said he had the money to spend and he failed.  We could have gotten Bryant to upgrade Anderson, we could've kept Marte, we could have gotten Castellanos (I also felt we should've gone after Rodon to make the rotation better).  If Ng cannot do her job in spite of Sherman's limitations, then she needs to go, too.  We as fans have gotten so used to bad owners that their actions have become acceptable and shouldn't be.  We as fans deserve better.  Ownership needs to be held accountable.  The identity and culture need to change.

I know it's been 4 games, but these have been my feelings for a long time now.

The line gets redrawn every year.

They can sit back...because they are still making money.

They just need to move the team. I would love for that to be the end of it.

"Las Vegas High Rollers...come see our hot slots!"

I don't think the team is as doomed as you all make it seem. The fact that we're in this spot where we're dying for just one more player is a testament to how well the approach has worked thus far. This team is in the best position it's been probably since 2005. Should they have acquired a CF? Yes, definitely. But no one here knows what the other side was asking for, what was offered, and how talks broke down. What we do know is that there was a conflict between Jeter, who wanted to win, and Sherman, who we aren't sure wants to win.

And this feeling will all go away once they acquire that CF, or someone emerges to take that spot. It hasn't even been a week yet and you're all acting like the season's over.

Also, the two runs we got yesterday both came from the CF position 🙂

Once the Marlins get their CF, fire on all cylinders, and you all enjoy baseball again, I'll welcome you over to the optimists' circle... but I'll give you all shit for it.

I agree with this but it's what also gives us the "so close yet so far" feeling. We're almost there but we're not there until we get there and the first week has made it feel like we're not gonna get there so I think that's the feeling of the moment. Everyone, fans and the team, need a hot streak right now.

Yep.  You can't keep waiting and waiting and waiting on farm guys to come up and do great.  There are literally almost NO bats in the minors outside of MAYBE Watson.  Don't even start by telling me Bleday is going to be great because he had one good fall league season in a notorious hitters environment.  Watson is still a few years away and again, is still a prospect at this point so he's an unknown.

It blows my mind that after 5ish years of ownership some of ya'll are still like "Wait and see in another 2-3 years!"  NO team should be given an 8ish year window to build a winning club.  it's NOT acceptable! - yet here we are with folks still defending that process. 8 years is a CAREER for a lot of sports players.  It's unacceptable to us as long time fans and by tolerating this eternal belief that somehow there are some super prospects that will one day turn us into a major contender is just buying into their ruse and letting Ng hoard prospects and letting Sherman pocket money that should be invested back into the team.

This is projected to be a winning club. 82-80 according to Fangraphs, actually.

Every year, we hear the same shit "Give it another year" and then we hear how this coming season will be the one. Then it isn't the one, and the cycle repeats itself. Just admit you'll never get tired of waiting if you're one of the people that does that.

I am too lazy to find my post from around a year ago but I remember predicting we'd see this happen if the off-season came and went without the big moves needed. How people would say be patient, trust the process, it is coming, etc. We heard at the start of the off-season, that we need to give them a full off-season and how we were jumping the gun with "panic". Now those same people are still pushing the goalposts back, even after a failure of an off-season.

One last note - I never said this team is doomed, not sure anyone has. But the eternal wait has gotten old.

yep. i've never said this was a bad team either.  I feel they MIGHT get to .500 but likely will  be a few games under.  They could go over .500 too if somehow Jazz, Cooper, and Sanchez suddenly go off and there isn't a rash of injuries to the starters.

If Sherman had even been willing to spend up to 100mil on this years payroll they could have fielded a very GOOD to great team if they had spent wisely.  If he had bumped payroll to 120mil this team would have been a legit frontrunning WS contender and could have been all kept together at about the same price point for the next few years to get the fanbase going in S. Florida finally.

Again, instead of Garcia and Soler they could have signed Correa.  Ditch BA and go with Bryant.  Sign Rodon. Traded for Bryan Reynolds, traded for Wendle AND still completed the deal with the O's for Scott and Sulser.  They'd STILL be in the bottom third of payroll with some very high ceiling prospects in the minors.  That's what every fan of this team should realize and understand that why the team they are fielding is NOT acceptable.

When we were being told the same things last August and people were saying we'd make the moves this off-season and 2022 would be the year. Now it is wait til 2023 or whenever.

Yep. Every year more people grow sick of it on here but there are still the diehards that believe somehow next season will be THe OnE and run that same tired mantra out over and over.

It's not doomed, but the team is stuck in a vicious cycle that no fan base should be subjected to.  We should have been collecting solid impact pieces to the roster over the last few years and then supplementing them when good prospects are ready (or traded for good pieces)... Instead, they piss money on cheaper options thinking they'll be just as good as the elite free agents they never had any designs of getting

Edited by CyggyMarlin

Ok so next question, we're so sick of waiting, the eternal optimism has been wasted up, so what does that mean now? It's been 5 years, they still suck... what should we do? Everyone pack it in, delete their accounts here, go on and never watch the Marlins again?

If the team hasn't done well isn't the whole point of baseball "there's always next year?"

Like I'm not sure what the bitching is supposed to lead to, what's the end result there as a fan? Give up and get a new team and look away from the Marlins forever?

So should we all give up?

No, but we should demand and expect better than the shit they keep giving us

Of course, but we can't do much except complain on a message board and then, hey, "there's always next year!"

My point is, whether we complain or not, other than flat out quitting on the team entirely there's nothing we can do but wait.

FYI go ahead and bitch.

I'm not saying don't do that.

They deserve it because they haven't done anything until they've actually succeeded.

In the world of professional sports, winning would never be the only one element and sometimes it's even not a priority one.

Do you not think the team is better this year than they were last? Do you have reason to believe this team, who is largely under club control for a very long time, has peaked?
