Our pitching staff is a lot more dominant this year. How much of that success comes from Stallings?

Yall being very harsh. Alfaro swung at every pitch and couldn't catch. Sandy Leon could barely hit a pop up. Only good catcher weve had in the last 10+ yrs is Realmuto. I'll take my chances with Stallings.

I'll agree with this overall.

Save for the 9th inning which is just a curse.

He really has been much better defensively behind the plate than any of the shit (aside from Cervelli) they've run out there since JT.

It should also be noted though that last year was really his only full year he played too so there really isn't a definitive baseline of what he is as a full-time catcher.

Good point there too.

Man I wish Cervelli could manage this team.

Is he working for the Padres? I noticed he was there in San Diego recently.

Yes, as a catching coach if I'm not mistaken. I remember this happening just before they acquired Alfaro which makes me think Cervelli had a say in getting him to SD.

How is our pitching a lot more dominant this year?

Sandy, Pablo and Luzardo have definitely been more dominant so far this season.  Elieser shouldn't be in the rotation and I don’t think any catcher can help Rogers right now until he fixes his mechanics and thus, his location.

The bullpen, outside of Bender, has been very good also.  The Bender issue is most likely related to spider tack.  Overall,  Stallings has done a great job managing this staff. Something Alfaro sucked at.

With the DH, we can afford to keep a defensive minded catcher.  However,  even with a DH, we can't afford to have both a defensive minded catcher and shortstop. Something is going to have to give with one or the other.

Pablo is (so far) having a career year, Sandy is about the same as last year (ERA is almost a full run better but k/bb down so he's pretty much just doing what he does), Lizard is certainly waaaay better than what we witnessed last season.

Rogers is doing the same as he has been doing since the all-star break last year.  Bullpen overall, outside of the 9th inning, seems to be better as well.  I generally feel ok in any inning outside of the 9th now - something that I couldn't say last year.

I'm sure it's a combination of Mel and Stallings - probably more Mel than Stallings in Lizard's case but Stallings has been WAAAY better defensively than the constant boneheaded shit we saw from last year's tandem from hell.  Yeah, he's had a couple passed balls (the most recent one definitely should have been called a passed ball) but you know what? neither of them were called passed balls which also leads me to believe it's like that for a lot of catchers around the league that we don't see every night so that likely means those numbers are skewed for all the catchers out there - we just happened to witness it live with ours.

Anyway, if he gets back to around .700 ops like he was last season i'm sure we'll all be very thrilled to have him back there.  Regardless - he's still an upgrade over last year and it's not like we could have done any better in FA since they cheaped out on bringing JT back the previous season.

I'm still way more worried about Avisail, Soler, Sanchez, and Rojas' bats at this point

Alfaro has all the physical gifts to be a great catcher.  It just seems like is baseball IQ is not what it should be. That's his real problem.

agreed...but he's failed with two separate clubs and is now on his third...maybe the Padres can figure him out

The Stallings hate is curious.

I'm not sure what anyone was really expecting offensively from Stallings.  If you truly expected something better than an 8 or 9 hole hitter than....

Damn did you get sold a bad bill of goods.

Defensive catcher metrics are some of the most unreliable metrics still in existence, tbh.

Stallings is so many times better than Alfaro just in terms with how he works with his staff that literally everything else is second and really its who cares.

On a team with a strong offense, you can get away with Stallings bat... but when you have a shit-show offense like the Marlins have, it glaringly sticks out

Exactly.

If Avisail, Soler, Aguilar, Cooper, Rojas were all hitting like we hoped or at least 75% of that, Stallings' bat doesn't matter.

And then we get into the discussion of what does Ng look for when getting hitters: OBP, SLG, HRs, Cheapness? I would be OK with less home runs in the line-up if we had a lot of smart hitters with proven histories of high batting average, strong BABIP, contact rate, high walk percentage, etc... But it seems like the Marlins go after the all or nothing power hitter with terrible whiff rate and horrible plate approach, which is why we either lose 3 to 2 a lot or occasionally win 9 to 2.

Yep ... give me the guy that averages 18 homers a year with a .375 OBP and I'm good with that.

give me a whole lineup of guys like that actually.

All I wanted was someone better than Jorge Alfaro.

Why did Stallings become worse than Alfaro when he put on a Marlins uniform?

This guy is terrible at everything.

Alfaro is OPSing .800 lol

He ended up at .730ish ops in 2018 and again in 2019 so it's not crazy to think he has an .800ops season in him.  He's still striking out at about the same rate so it may just be a little bit more luck this year so far.  Either way, he had the better bat than Stallings and we knew that - his defense was just freaking awful.
