Soler seems to do better in contract years, at least thats what I think but I never did any research to back it up. A one year deal by definition would've been a contract year.

I think he was being sarcastic that they're gonna sign a middle free agent and trade a front line SP as their rally cry instead of just signing Soler. 

In that case, Joe is right.

It sucks because I like him but now we gotta root for Soler to regress dramatically so we can look back in a year and say that Bendix was a genius for not offering the QO. Like we did with Marte and others.

We can debate the qualifying offer and financial stuff but the bottom line is that the Marlins didn't want one of their biggest bats to return and that's flat out sad and sends an awful message without an appropriate follow up that would say "well we didn't want him because we're moving on to better" but that has not happened so yeah it's a flat out downgrade.

Yeah, it'd be one thing if you subtracted Soler and then added xyz other parts to add back the production in different ways (say higher OBP guys, etc), but instead, it's been subtract and crickets.

That has to be true because if it was just about getting a draft pick there was zero reason to not give the QO. Not giving it means they didn't want to risk keeping him.

Meh, I hope he does well in games not involving the Marlins. I don't blame the players when the owners are cheap fucks. I'd continue to root for Marte if he wasn't a Met.

Yup. Basically there’s a split analysis:

- Given the team’s imposed financial constraints, not making the qualifying offer may have been prudent if they believed Soler was likely to accept it

- Baseball has no salary cap, there’s no good reason they can’t spend a lot more than they are, and they didn’t actively pursue any free agents anyway. Make the qualifying offer, and either: he accepts ➡️ you’ve improved your 2024 roster, or he declines ➡️ you add a high draft pick to improve a bad farm system (bottom quarter in MLB by the assessments I’ve seen so far).

if you want to build upon 2023 - you sign Soler.  

In today's day and age, thats not even an unreasonable contract.  It doesnt hamstring you long term.  It allows you to maintain a level of competitivness and keep pushing forward for a playoff berth.

Joke of a franchise.

1 year contracts cost you cash of which MLB owners are awash in cash and cash flow.  Especially when your payroll is south of 100 million.
