In today's day and age, thats not even an unreasonable contract.  It doesnt hamstring you long term.  It allows you to maintain a level of competitivness and keep pushing forward for a playoff berth.

Who the hell is going to hit home runs on this team besides Jake Burger?  This is one of the weakest line ups I've ever seen.

Jazz, Sanchez, and even Bell all have decent power. Would have been better if they added someone with speed. I would have greatly preferred that over Soler.

Bell is going to give you 20 to 25 at most, but probably more like 15 to 20.  Sanchez's peak is also 15-20.  Jazz?  I think his ceiling isn't that high either and I don't expect anything close to a full season from him.  This was one of the worst offenses in baseball and one of the lowest in home run rate.  It's definitely not improved and I would argue its worse.

Unless someone really breaks out this year, this is going to probably be the worst Marlins lineup in a long, long time. I really hope Jazz stays healthy and can play close to a full season because I like him, but for this team to not be a 4th or 5th place team for most of the year you are counting on him and a lot of other guys to all overperform. That's very unlikely to happen.

The signal from the Marlins FO is that despite making the playoffs, ownership is either unable or unwilling to spend to build on that. Kim Ng being shown the door pretty quickly after what was a very successful season said a lot.

I'm starting to wonder if they are going to go back into rebuilding soon. The farm is really barren and I just don't see how this team, as constructed, is going to be anywhere close to playoff contention. The rumors about them trading someone like Edward Cabrera or Jesus Luzardo have been pretty consistent most of the offseason.

It's really sad that I am at the point where I would like to have someone like Loria back, if for no other reason than sometimes he would actually open his pocketbook.

I think burger can hit 30 but agree with your point otherwise

Minus soler, but plus a full season of Burger versus most of the season with Segura. I think Bell is a little better than Cooper, too. I don't think the lineup is worse than last year, but it's probably worse than what they had last September.

I understand what you’re saying and the point of your whole post.

Just want to say in my opinion I like the current lineup a bit better than say the 22-23 opening day lineups.

For example I prefer:

Bell instead of Cooper/Aguilar

Burger instead of BA/Segura

Whoever instead of Stallings etc.

and in reality .. the outfield is not that much different than the past couple of years Avi, DLC, Jazz, JD, Sanchez.

So while it might not be the best possible lineup they could have out there..

If I count just the amount of time since I started following the Marlins again regularly which was in the start of the 2020 season.. I’ve lived through some recent years of guys like Monte, Brinson, Isan Diaz, Lewin(Sorry @Michael ) Stallings, Alfaro, Dickerson and the like. So comparatively speaking.. in Marlins recent history for lineups, I can say I’ve definitely seen worse than what they currently have out there.

You do realize that in alllll the years Soler has played he's only hit more than 14hrs in a season 3 times? Also, you conveniently left off Burger who only hit two fewer home runs than Soler last season.

The problem isnt so much in not signing Soler to a fairly reasonable contract its that they have literally done NOTHING to improve the 2024 team on the field from last year.  

The team on Opening Day in 2024 will be a worse team than was playing in the playoffs in 2023. 

That is a 100% fact.  

They are closer to Washington than they are to Atlanta right now.
