  1. why would they move a Mets series? Those series double our attendnece when they're in town! Lots of Mets fans in PR.
  2. I don't give him a free pass on the offense but I can see how arguments could be made to give it to him but the defense is horrific and that's his defense and there's talent on that defense. Zagacky will throw the kids under the bus but will never be critical of the coaches. Also, Shannon is the one who picked Freeman to start. Brilliant.
  3. I don't buy the there's no talent on the team theory. Phillips and Campbell will be 1st rounders in the '08 draft. The recruiting classes from '03 to '05 were all top 10 classes. I think there's talent but the coaching (both Coker and Shannon) left the talent down. They've had 4 OC the last 5 years. I think it would be tough to learn a new system every year. Shannon has the Canes rated about 60th out of the 66 (or so) BCS schools. It's not the lack of talent. Phillips will be a first rounder in THIS YEAR'S draft. I don't see him coming back for another year when he's gonna be a top 15 pick. Campbell on the other hand might come back. He hasn't had the kind of year UM and NFL scouts were hoping for, but he's one of those few guys that could go to the combine and work his way into the top 15 with impressive workouts. By the '08 draft I mean the draft coming up in April '08.

  5. The Canes regressed the last 5 years under Coker and Shannon has managed to do the impossible.. regress from the low mark left by Coker. I guess when you promote part of the problem this is what you get.
  6. Holliday: G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG *OPS+ TB158 636 120 216 50 6 36 137 11 4 63 126 .340 .405 .607 150 386 Team won NL Pennant. Rollins: G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG *OPS+ TB162 716 139 212 38 20 30 94 41 6 49 85 .296 .344 .531 118 380 Team lost in NLDS (to Holliday's Rockies) I. Don't. Get. It. I could be wrong but it has always been my understanding that votes are tabulated before the postseaon. It is unfair to factor in playoff performance of the team in that case. I have no problem with Utley getting the award. Holliday's numbers might have been better in the end but I think the Phillies overcame greater obstacles by dethroning the Mets. Say what you want about the Mets bringing themselves down, but you can't ignore the fact that the Phillies beat the Mets when they needed to. The voting is done before the postseason begins so the postseason has nothing to do with it. I think Utley would have won it had he not missed a month down the stretch.
  7. I assume they put a lot of weight on what they each perveive the Colorado factor to be. I don't know about that. A lot of people think the humidor has turned Coors into a fair hitters park and that's a completely false. It contineus to be the best hitters park. False. Citizen Bank Park is the best hitters park. Below are the Park Factors according to baseball-reference. Citizens was 5th. Coors, as expected, was 1st. COL 109 CHC 107 ARI 105 LAD 105 PHI 104 CIN 103 MIL 102 SFG 100 FLA 100 STL 99 NYM 98 ATL 98 PIT 96 HOU 94 WSN 93 SDP 89 Over 100 favors batters, under 100 favors pitchers.

  9. There were two voters who voted Magglio Ordonez 1st and A-Rod 2nd. One was Tom Gage of The Detroit News. The other, Jim Hawkins, of The Oakland Press in Pontiac, Michigan. No surprise there. What's the big deal? ARod deserved it more but it's not as ridiculous as votign for Rollins who will get the NL MVP in a few minutes.
  10. I don't know if it was mentioned anywhere but yesterday Barry Jackson in the Herald quoted city commissioner Sanchez saying the Marlins have reduced their contribution by $30 million to $40 million and that he's losing his patience with the Marlins.
  11. Many people don't like Garland because they think he doesn't K enough hitters. I'm not one of those many.
  12. I wonder if this will help boost the possibility of hosting a larger chunk of the WBC (maybe more than just Asian countries) in Japan in 2009. The more time passes, the more excited I am for it. That has been MLB's plan all along. You may even see a few games played in Europe. doubt that. europe isn't really into baseball for the most part... The World Baseball Classic isn't about baseball in America. It is about baseball overseas. It won't happen for the 2009 WBC, I wouldn't bet against a round being played in Europe. Ever heard of market expansion? Would you bet on baseball becoming popular in Europe?

The more time passes, the more excited I am for it. That has been MLB's plan all along. You may even see a few games played in Europe. doubt that. europe isn't really into baseball for the most part... ...which is why American leagues are trying to showcase their sport overseas. London wasn't really 'into' football and got a game. I wonder what the ratings in the UK were for the game. I'm pretty sure they miniscule so London still really isn't into football but yeah they got a game and will get more.
  14. I think he's a much better hitter than the average 2B. Last year he was 5th in MLB among 2B in OPS and this year he was tied for 9th in MLB if you park adjust the numbers. His problem is not his bat.
  15. If Bonds and Jeter are guilty I think cheating taxpayers of millions is a much bigger deal than taking steroids and lying under oath about it. Spoken like someone who has never done their own taxes before. :thumbup I have zero problems with exploiting legal loopholes in our tax system. If I could get away with it? I'd establish legal residency in Florida too... I have no issues exploiting loopholes as well. If Jeter was not a NY resident he should not be liable for NY income taxes however if he was a NY resident in accordance to the NY guidelines and he didn't pay then he should. Do you disagree with this?
  16. If Bonds and Jeter are guilty I think cheating taxpayers of millions is a much bigger deal than taking steroids and lying under oath about it.
  17. Lowell's road OPS is .815 over the past two seasons. That's not bad.
  18. But you have to admit they are alone in the wildnerness with their interpretation of MLB/Marlins finances. No other credible source concurs. The likely conclusion is they are wrong, not because the are purposely misrepresentating anything but because their analytical model is wrong. The Forbes numbers are widely used by other media. If others in the media thought the Forbes figures were wrong they wouldn't use them.
  19. One of the best that hasn't been mentioned is Red River. Through the first 100 or so minutes it's as good as any until they bring an unnecessary love interest that subtracts from the movie but it's still great. I could be wrong but I think John Ford said it was the best western and he knows a bit about the genre.
  20. If they aren't going to sign him, which they won't, then it would be stupid to hold on to him This is exactly right and is the sole reason why I want him gone. It isn't about being too cheap to afford his remaining years of arbitration it is about the Marlins being unable to afford his contract when hitting the free market. It's just an unfortunate fact of nature that very few teams will have that kind of money. It's the burden of being a small market team and growing a mega superstar. It would be a waste to have him on our roster in two years and have him walk with no compensation. When other teams are offering the farm for him why not make the move? In the remote chance that Willis, Olsen, Nolasco, RVH and whoever else is in the rotation pitch well then we could compete with Miguel in the lineup but would not compete without him unless the deal is with the Dodgers. Other than the Dodgers I'm not impressed with the "farms" being offered. Howie Kendrick as the centerpiece for Cabrera? That's a f***ing joke.
  21. If they aren't going to sign him, which they won't, then it would be stupid to hold on to him It all depends on what we get. If the package is not that good then I would rather keep him for two more years and then get the draft picks, two of them, I think.
  22. Miggy losing out to Wright here is another bit of a surprise???? no???? Could easily make an arguement Wright was better than Miggy. Harder to make an arguement for Migz over Wright than Wright over Migz. But as much as I hate him, Admin should have won it. I agree. Chipper's year somehow gets overlooked by everyone.
  23. As of now, Willis is probably only worth a mid-level prospect or two. he's worth much more than that not much more, no. I absolutely refuse to believe that. ESPN's Keith law was on with Boog today and said Dontrelle's value has declined quite a bit becasue his velocity is down and the command of his fastball is way off and he agreed with Boog regarding Dontrelle being a prime candidate for a major injury because of his workload and his delivery.
