Official Carlos Delgado Thread

Somehow, I get the feeling that this is just BS negotiations that will never amount to anything, just to make the fans think the Marlins FO is actually trying. This reeks of the Vlad Guerrero negotiations we had.

PROVE ME WRONG BEINFEST, PROVE ME WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First of all it doesn't appear that the story came from the Marlins but rather from Delgado's agent who seems to find a new suitor every few days. From what I've read Beinfest and the FO refused comment.

While I'm pessimistic that anything will come from this I'm not cynical regarding the organization's intentions. They just may be overmatched by other more deep-pocketed teams. I never believed for a minute that the Fish had a chance to land Vlad and in all honesty I'm not sure the chances here are much better.

But at least they're trying.

To some extent it depends on what happens with the B boys - Beltre and Beltran. Where they land could significantly increas the Marlins chances of signing Delgado or could dash their hopes.

Right now, with hours left before the next deadline, I wonder what other moves the Marlins are pondering?

Beltre signed a 5-year, 64 million dollar contract with Seattle about 3 weeks ago.

If the Marlins are looking at Delgado, it doesn't mean they are looking to deal anyone. I think Loria may be telling Beinfest that special money is available for a biggie like Pudge was in 2003 and Delgado is in 2005.

However, it costs nothing to negotiate, so let's see what goes down. I think Beinfest is ready to do something.

Lest we forget that there are no state income taxes in Florida as well.

There isn't one in Texas either. I know the state and local taxes in NY for someone making that much money would probably be at least 10 percent (probably closer to 15 percent). So give the Marlins a 10-15 percent discount compared to NY. So our offer of 30 million is really like 33-35 million in NY. Plus, take the cost of living into account... (although for someone that rich the cost of living really doesn't make any difference).

I don't think he'll be able to not stand for God Bless America in NY or Texas.

650645

You think he could away with it in Miami too? I can't think of one MLB city in the country where he could get away with it.

650654

Yeah. Who cares here? There's no one at the games anyways.

Only an average of about 22,000 people at the ballpark a night...that's no one right?

22K for ~6M greater south FL area.

Yankees - 50K for ~20M greater NY/NJ area.

On a per-capita basis, the fish draw BETTER than the Yankees..and that' with non-existent public transportation down here.

I know Tony, plus the Yankees have been around as long as those subways. Marlins enter their 13th season in 2005. Remember those 25 years the Yanks couldn't draw over 1 million to Yankee Stadium?

Getting Delgado for 3 years, $33 million would be a steal. Even in 130 games last year on a crappy Toronto squad, he hit 30 homers and 100 RBI. Getting him for $10 million per year would be a ridiculous bargain. Consider that Beltran is looking for $17 mill per year....and then go compare his regular-season numbers with Beltran's. I think Beinfest looked around, saw that the best offer on the table for this guy was 3 years, $30 mill from the Orioles, and said "hell, if that's what Delgado is going for, we gotta get in on that." But I don't think they're looking to get into a bidding war. They're hoping to get a steal.

SkyDome is a better hitter's park than PPS...it gets even better for the hitter when the windscoop....I mean roof is open.

ESPN News just reported that we have offered Delgado $34 million over 3 years. Means the Muts must offer him more than $42 million over three years to match us.

That has to be the best contract he has been offered yet. Wouldnt the Orioles have to pretty much offer him 40 million over 3 years to match us? Whats the likelihood that they raise their offer by 10 million? So far havent heard much about Texas. With the Muts preoccupied with Beltran, this could be happening.

That is great news.

Just the thought that we are now offering multiyear contracts that are big to big name free agents, makes me wonder when we get the stadium whats going to happen. :notworthy

:) I think the reason we are now making these offers is because behind the scenes, they are near 100% confident that the stadium is going to happen.

You say it as if it matters. Every homer Delgado hits is over 400 feet anyway, so I doubt it matters what ballpark he's in.

O's detriment in this deal is the new ballpark and new football stadium.

M&T Bank Stadium along with Oriole Park at Camden Yards are both partially paid for by franchise sports taxes which are mostly payed by players for the home teams. The state income tax in Maryland also gives them a detriment.

Yeah, the Orioles would have to offer him at least $42 million to match us. And, yes, we have given him the best offer so far. The Orioles and Mets offered him $30 million for 3 years. If we offered him 3 years, $36 million, the other teams would have to offer him $47 millionn to match us... an increase of $17 million from their initial offer. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

doubt it's got any additional info on it, but ESPN Insider lists something about the Marlins & Delgado as well...

650751

Nothing really extra except that the Mets and Orioles have only asked for what his contract parameters are. Who knows if they agree to them or not. Great that we have already made an offer.

It doesn't mean the Mets have to offer $42 million, it doesn't work that way but it does mean they'll have to offer significantly more.

The absence of a Florida income tax only affects 81 of the games played, those in Florida (assuming none against the D'Rays) and the remainder depends on the taxation rates in the states where our away games are played.

And conversely, when a NY team plays in Florida...well you get the idea.

Let's just leave it that the Marlins are tax preferable to teams in Md or NY as well as being geographically better located regarding Delgado's off-season residence in PR.

Income tax is income tax. Having 81 games in the tax free shelter we have in Florida is better than 26 or so right?

Only some states tax players from visiting teams... 12 in all, I believe. So I think Florida tax laws will probably apply to about 2/3 of his salary, or maybe more. Even if only half his salary is subject to Florida tax laws, the Muts have to offer him at least 36 million.

I could get all into this....how many people would like me to look up all the exact details and report back?
