Posted April 23, 200519 yr There's no room for Niner in the OF with Cabs and ENC playing so well and of course there is no room for him at 1B, but he does have experience at 3B and playing ~1/4 of the season there for the O's in 2000. Give Niner two starts at 3B to let Lowell collect himself, and i'd rather see Niner at 3B than Easley although his defense probably won't be as good. Thoughts? Don't go crazy on me now .
April 23, 200519 yr Not a bad idea for the offense, defensive wise I would rather see Cabs at 3b and Niner in LF.
April 23, 200519 yr It's probably for the best that Cabrera puts the infield behind him. Conine can play third. He should be getting some spot-starts there regardless of Lowell's recent performances.
April 23, 200519 yr So I'm the only one who thinks this is a ridiculous idea? Niner hasnt played more than 1 game at 3B since 2001. No doubt his reflexes are not as good as they were back then(just guessing, I have no facts to back this up). I agree we need to get Niner some at bats, but if Lowell is to sit on the bench, Easley should be at 3rd. Although the only way Lowell can get out of this slump is to keep playing him.
April 23, 200519 yr I like it. Lowell is having a hard time, and he needs that time to collect himself. Id like to see Niner more often, hes definetely up for it. Well see if a change is made.

Lowell looks like a very frustrated man right now, you could see it in his face. The best thing for him may be to rest him a couple of games.
April 23, 200519 yr Author Cabrera can't be switching positions, especially if it's going to be temporary for just a couple games at most. When a starter constantly changes positions, it will have a negative effect on his offense. Cabs needs to stay in LF.
April 23, 200519 yr so no one has a problem that Niner hasnt played alot of 3B since 2001? Who knows if he even takes groundballs there in practice.

I agree lets not throw him in the fire cold. Let him practice there for a bit, see if he can still do the job.
April 23, 200519 yr Jack will probably sit Enc for one of the next two games this series against the Reds, so Niner will probably get a start in RF then.
April 23, 200519 yr I agree with Ramp. Conine cannot play third, he is an outfielder. Keep our all-star third baseman at third. The only way to break out of a slump is to get AB's and hit your way out. If Lowell needs a rest then Easley should spell him. Under no circumstance should Conine play third. I rather give Lenny Harris some time at third before Niner. :hat
April 23, 200519 yr I'd rather have Lowell's defense at 3B than an adventure with Niner. Cabrera at 3rd? Ok. He is going to be a OF as long as he is a Marlin, get over it already. Anyone who has watched Lowell more than the 3 weeks of this season knows he is going to bounce back.
April 23, 200519 yr If you're talking about giving Lowell a one-game type of rest, fine. But if it's for any longer, I don't like it. He's had slumps before, he'll hit his way out of it.

Lowell needs a couple of games to sit and just watch...clear his head...come back with a clean slate.

Defensively, Mike would be far superior, and offensively I'm not convinced we'd be helped by replacing his bat with Niner's just so Mike can "rest." If Mike really needs a "rest," I agree that it should remain Easley's job to spell him for the time being. That said, I have no problem with Niner practicing at third so he could potentially have a bigger role off the bench in the future.
