Question for Out of State Marlins Fans

Featured Replies

Also, we have the coolest team nickname. So many baseball teams have boring nicks. Phillies, Mets, A's, Twins, etc. It seems like the latest teams (starting in the 1990s) have better names. Devil Rays isn't too bad either. Marlins and the whole fish/water theme seems so refreshing with the summer heat in Florida, plus all of the waterbased tourism. Two thumbs up, but that's just my opinion. :cool

It is one of the greatest teams to love becaus there lovable in 98 how could u not like those kids they threw out(not counting the 100+ losses)

I was a Mets fan growing up because they had their high single-A team in my hometown. Shortly after they won the World Series in 1986, they broke up the major league team and moved their minor league team somewhere else. I started rooting against them, and when baseball expanded I decided to root for the Marlins.

I went to school at the University of Miami for four years and since I couldn't watch my favorite team (the Yankees -- see the name), I started following the Marlins. Also my Great Aunt is a huge Marlins fan.

The 2003 playoffs were absolutely awesome for me, though. I remember there was a little thing in the paper about different matchups, and I was thinking, "why isn't there any Yankees/Marlins" matchup. Sure enough, it happened and I was ecstatic. I didn't really root for either team, but I loved watching all of the chaos on the news after they won. It was cool to be down there at that time.

Now that I'm back in Jersey, I still follow them. I even went to one of the games at Shea wearing my Florida stuff, which was fun. Still hoping for another Yanks/Fish WS. (Yes, I know it's a strange combo of teams to like, but I grew up a Yankee fan. I know how much they're hated and whatever, but I really don't care. And at least there's a common dislike of the Mets :) ).

Well this is funny, b/c we are very much alike. I'm from Long Island, been a Yankee fan my whole life, but the Marlins caught my eye very early on. Started with that '97 team. When the Yanks got knocked our of the playoffs by the Indians, I had to root for the Fish to win that very dramatic world series. Since then i always followed them even though they were a disaster for many years after. Then 2003 happened, and I got a look at Dontrelle early in the season and I was hooked (pardon the pun) on the Fish again. Little did I know that the world series would be between these 2 teams. It was a really enjoyable series for me since it was my two fave teams. Since then I always follow the Fish. I love the way they play. The youth, speed, the energy of this team is just refreshing to me, especially when you've been a Yankee fan your whole life and seeing a ton of overpriced veterans. That's my story!

I was born and raised in PR, but I have a lot of family in Florida, so it felt right to root for the Marlins. I also remember visiting Miami in the summer of 1993 when one of my uncles gave me a set of Marlin Baseballs (about 5) with players faces such as Orestes Destrade, Brian Harvey, etc....I've been following them ever since, and was lucky enough to see them in game 6 of the 03 WS!!!

Great thread; had to add my two cents

I remember when the Marlins were born and watching the first game. I had Marlin caps and T-shirts and remember bring surprised at seeing a Marlin pennant in a local restaurant (the waitress said that the owner's son was drafted by the Fish).

I watched the AAA prospects in Calgary/Albuquerque at Zephyr Field.

Once I moved to Tampa I became even more of a fan as I cannot stand and will not ever support any Tampa team (despise the Bucs, Rays and Lightning).

Always loved the Dolphins and Marlins and became more of a Heat and Panthers fan after being able to see their games.

Miami native and lived there until I was thirty. I grew up a Red Sox fan ,but switched my allegiance when the Marlins were born. I went to 15-20 games a season until I received a job offer that was to good to refuse and relocated to Savannah six years ago. Was there for all four home games of the '97 series. I'm the lone Marlin fan up here in a sea of Brave followers. Living as an exile, I can't tell ya'll how much I enjoy this site because, it's almost as good as being there.

i had that set too...Sheffield and Chuck Carr where on it too...I think it was a give away by local gas stations,. Mine was ruined by my little brother though after he used one of the balls (got all smeared).

a few years ago I was tired of soccer (almost every little boy plays it over here), and there was a baseball field close to my new dad's house

i signed up and decided i needed a fav. team, so i just looked @ all the teams and i decided on the marlins cause the name is nice (what NOmarlinsfan explained) and it just looked good

Hello Everybody...

Great Topic...I've been looking/reading through this forum for a while now, and finally decided to register...I knew it was only a matter of time!

Anyway, I was born and grew up in Miami all my life and I moved out to California to be with my girlfriend (a huge Dodgers fan, lol) in June 2003.

I remember always being into baseball and when a team came here to South Florida I was so excited! I always had a place in my heart for the team...even after the 1994 "season" but I didn't follow them much after that :plain I remember Chuck Carr, Charlie Hugh, Orestes, Walt Weiss, Bret Barberie (LOL)...and of course Benito Santiago!

anyway...Fast Forward to August 2003...I had gotten a job out here, and it was funny, there are lots of Giants fans here and someone from my work was selling tickets...for the Giants vs Marlins oddly enough. I really missed Florida and Miami, and I guess when you move away, you try hard to have something to hold on to... I didn't get to go to that game, and I didn't know what was in store for the team that season...

So I guess lots of things fell into place for me to really follow the team after being let down as a kid in '94...and I'm glad things happend the way they did...cause now I'm here, I have my trusty MLB.tv package, and I'm watching the Marlins! :thumbup

Thought the team was cool when it was created, became a bandwagon fan when they won it all in 97 and been a fan ever since.

My Grandma gave me a Marlins hat when I was younger. I guess that's the day I became a fish fan.

Thank God I'm not a Braves fan.

  • 1 month later...

Was a fan in '92 for the Expansion Draft. Grew up 5 minutes from Reading Phillies stadium (AA), so I was always in Phillies territory, but I never felt attached to the team (with those horrible late 80's Phillies teams, can you blame me?) When I was in high school in the late 80's, I said that if baseball and football ever expand, I am picking a team and rooting for them from Day 1. I will stay with that team no matter what. My original reasoning for picking the Marlins was because I didn't like the name Rockies, and I liked the teal coloring of Florida. For football, I picked Jacksonville because I went to high school with Kerry Collins and am not a fan of his, so I decided against Carolina...

i wasnt around when this thread started and since cyggy bumped it i just wanted to say it was great reading how you out of towners became fans. some really cool stories. put a smile on my face after a sad season :)

Can't believe how long it has been since Scott Pose, Darrell Whitmore, Junior Felix, Orestes Destrade, Conine's 4-4 day, Hough beating the Dodgers, Bryan Harvey

Born in Miami. Lived in Pembroke Pines untill summer of 2001. Bunch of my family still lives in Hollywood, Pembroke Pines, and Miramar so they are always sending me Marlins stuff in the mail.. Still got my Cliffy Floyd bobble head they sent me for Christmas a couple years back.

Never lived in Florida, though I have a few relatives in Jacksonville and Panama City.

When I started watching baseball, before I knew I loved the Marlins, I knew I hated the Braves. One led to the other. :cool

Was around 10 and didn't have a baseball team in 1993 and thought the Marlin fish was cool and I liked the teal color. Been faithful to them ever since.

One of the reasons I became a marlins fan is Livan Hernandez. I saw him pitch while he was still in Cuba, and his brother El Duque was the best pitcher for my favourite team (Industriales) and perhaps one of the best in Cuban history. So after the fish won it all in '97 and with Livan being a big part of the championship run, I started to root for the fish. Then I came here in 2000, but it wasn't until a couple of games befor the "Boston Massacre" that I started watching the Marlins seriously. Now I am in boston and I still wear that teal and black baby!

My story is I was born in west palm beach so I route 4 my home team,Since i live in NY 13 of my 14 years liveing.Yankee fans r always bragging about 26 old ass championships so when marlins beat them in 2003 every1 was shut while got 2 make of the yankees :D
