October 2, 200521 yr The Marlins have never retired the number of a player or manager, and I think it would be very fitting for Jack McKeon to be the first Marlin in our short history to have his number retired. Man, my eyes are sweating...
October 2, 200521 yr Not going to happen. If we made the playoffs, yeah, but Jack did knda wear on some people at the end. I'd still rather have him over who we're probably going to end up replacing him with, but I don't see his number getting retired.
October 2, 200521 yr If the Yankees retired the number of every manager who won a World Series they wouldn't have enough numbers left to field a team. Seriously though, the standard for retiring a number must be quite high. 3 seasons as a manager with one playoff appearance isn't enough, particularly when he had the talent to get there all 3 times.
October 2, 200521 yr If any number is retired any time soon, it needs to be Jeff Conine. I would have said Mike Lowell before this season... And if Gary Sheffield goes into the HOF as a Marlin, I would retire his number as well.

Yeah, but they'll retire #6 for Torre, and they retired #1 for Billy Martin...McKeon's our version of those guys; he was the manager that made the franchise matter again.
October 2, 200521 yr The Marlins are should retire Jack's number, then they'll retire Lou Pinella's number.

October 2, 200521 yr Nay. One extremely special year was great, but I don't think he deserves to have his number retired. If we got to or won the WS, yes, but as it stands, no.
October 2, 200521 yr It's understandable that people would feel that way on the day he retires. Wait 3 or 4 years and then ask the question again when it won't be an emotional reaction.
October 3, 200521 yr I'm not for this. Sure I appreciate all that Jack has done, but he has only been here three years, one playoff appearance (and one World Series). Sorry, but that's not enough. Longevity and results are, in my opinion, the big two to think about when retiring a number. He only (arguably) as one of those.
October 3, 200521 yr Don't retire his number. Just put his name in a Marlins ring of honor type thing.
October 3, 200521 yr I say pull it out of rotation for the next 4-5 years, then take a look back and see if this is truly an honor that he deserves.

October 3, 200521 yr RETIRE JACK'S NUMBER???????? Wow, I think you need to come back when you're not crying from this afternoon and actually have your mind controlling your body isntead of your feelings. Retiring numbers, at least to me, is something HUGE and it should only be done for a big-time, hall of fame type player or coach. Jack Mckeon was only here 3 seasons. Sure, he had a magical season in 2003 but he led 2 underachieving teams after and lost control of this 2005 team...

The Miami Heat retired Michael Jordan's number, and the Marlins retired #5 essentially for the hell of it. Look, what happened to Carl Barger was unfortunate, but retiring a number that is pretty popular is a drastic move, it kind of sets a standard for the organization when it comes to the number retiring policy, you know, that no matter what the tenure is, it will be used to recognize people who have had a lasting impact on the franchise.
October 3, 200521 yr Wait a couple of years when Jack starts to bash the FO for penny pinching and forcing him out, and bash his players for not listening to him, and bash his fellow coaches for not getting Lowell to hit, AJ to be consistent, Cabrera to show up for meetings, etc. Then tell me you want to retire his number after 3 years with the team.

Jack won't bash the FO. I think there is mutual respect, and there is mutual agreement that it is time to move on. This isn't another Torborg/Ansberg episode
