October 19, 200520 yr it will be intresting to see if they get Zimmer, Baylor and Galaraga to come down here with him... For me, that's the key to the whole thing. A staff that has Zimmer, Baylor, Galarraga and Stottlemyre could be exceptional. dont forget perry hill
October 19, 200520 yr we should congratulate loria and beinfest for getting who they wanted. whether we agree or not you have to hand it to them cause they seem to get done what they want (aside from pudge and the stadium lol) but thats not their fault...or is it.?
October 19, 200520 yr This is a great move by the Marlins. Joe is going to make a heck of a manager for this team and hopefully he won't inherit too many of the problem players that plagued Jack McKeon over the last year and a half.
October 19, 200520 yr Even as a Yankee fan, I can't really say that I'm that pleased. At least Fredi has been a manager before, even if it was in the minors.
October 19, 200520 yr Time will tell If the players play to their ability and a strong coaching staff surrounds Joe, then it will work out fine How soon before we start coming up with '06 slogans? Mine: '06: Cut the crap and WIN
October 19, 200520 yr Hopefully the change is all the players need to be able to perform like they are capable again. Either way it's for the best to have it over with already so we can enter the free agent market with no non-player questions surrounding our team.
October 19, 200520 yr Every manager has to start somewhere. If he is as knowledgeable about the game as has been said, and surrounds himself with the proposed coaching staff, we should be in very very good shape. I'm glad we are getting fresh blood instead of old hat like Pinella, who would of done things the same exact way as McKeon, and that syle of coaching has been shown not to succeed here anymore. As for Fredi, once again if Girardi surrounds himself with the staff that was talked about, he is far and away a better candidate than Gonzalez IMO.
October 19, 200520 yr Even though Joe has no MLB experience as manager, I wonder if has enough respect to have free agent players want to be on his team
October 19, 200520 yr Even as a Yankee fan, I can't really say that I'm that pleased. At least Fredi has been a manager before, even if it was in the minors. Yeah...the lack of managerial experience really hurt Ozzie Guillen. This is a great move by Loria. Can't wait to see his staff. Any chance Al Leiter might have a spot in the organization? I've got to assume he knows Girardi pretty well.
October 19, 200520 yr My number one choice was Fredi, but I'm happy with this hire as well. I wanted new blood, not a retread, and we got that. Now he needs to put together that good staff (which hopefully doesn't include that Zimmer goof).

October 19, 200520 yr I love this news simply because I knew this was the number one guy that Loria and Beinfest wanted the whole time. It sucks when your # 1 choice turns you down...unless you're Notre Dame and your guy was Urban Meyer.... :whistle

Leiter won't be back, not after the way his tenure here ended, which I must say I'm disappointed with.

Yeah, the lack of experience never hurt Bob Brenly with the D-Backs or even Eric Wedge with the Indians this year.... and the years of experience really has helped guys like Dusty Baker, Mike Hargrove, Buck Showalter, Frank Robinson, Felipe Alou, etc.... etc...
October 19, 200520 yr Sweeeeeeeeeet! I like it - good luck, Joe and staff. It's going to be a fun 2006.
October 19, 200520 yr Fredi was my first choice as well, but I trust Loria and Beinfest judgement on picking a good manager. They know what our ballclub needs are. Girardi and the FO now need to do a good job filling the other coaching positions. That would be one of the keys for next season. The talent is there (unless we unload a lot of players)
October 19, 200520 yr Congratulations to Joe! I'll give him my full support. This may not have been his dream job, but I'm sure he will do all he can to be successful. I'm particularly pleased with the list of candidates he has mentioned for supporting coaches. And I'm thrilled Loria and Beinfest got this accomplished quickly so Joe will have time to build his staff and participate in all of the off-season player decisions.

The talent is there (unless we unload a lot of players) Well, here's the thing that I've read. Girardi was torn between coming here where there was more talent, but he'd have less control, going to Tampa where he'd have more control, but less of a chance of winning in the next 2 seasons, or just staying in New York. It seems he likes the idea of winning, and getting credit for it, so I'd assume most of the team will return.

Do you think Joe got a verbal commitment from Loria that he would keep a quality team in place?
