Everlong204
MIAMI - A federal air marshal opened fire on board an American Airlines flight on the ground at Miami International Airport, according to a law enforcement official who spoke only on condition of anonymity. ADVERTISEMENT At least one person was wounded, according to broadcast reports said. The plane had just arrived from Colombia and was headed to Orlando. Television showed police SWAT officers surrounding the plane. Airport and Miami-Dade County police officials said they had no immediate comment. Airlines officials did not immediately return calls seeking comment. Martin Gonzalez, spokesman for Colombia's civil aviation agency, said he had no information regarding the incident. "The flight left normally with no problems," he told the Associated Press in Bogota. He said he did not have a list of passengers who were aboard the plane. According to American Airlines' Web site, Flight 924 arrived from Medellin at 12:16 p.m. It was supposed to depart for Orlando at 2:18 p.m. The site says the flight status is delayed. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051207/ap_on_...zkxBHNlYwN0bQ--
Everlong204
MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- A person was shot and wounded on the Jetway to an American Airlines passenger jet that was at the terminal at Miami International Airport, an airline official said. A federal official told CNN that the passenger was shot by a federal air marshal, who felt the passenger was acting in a threatening manner. A senior administration official added that the passenger claimed to have a bomb in his carry-on luggage. An air marshal told the passenger to stop, and he did not, the official said, adding that the marshal fired after the passenger reached into his carry-on bag. The weapon was fired on the Jetway to Flight 924, which was on a stopover in Miami during a flight from Medellin, Colombia, to Orlando, Florida, police said. The Boeing 757, which can hold about 180 passengers, was due to take off for Orlando at 2:18 p.m. ET. Footage from the scene showed police cars and what appeared to be SWAT vehicles surrounding the plane. Several officers wielding rifles were running toward and around the plane. http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/12/07/airplane.gunshot/index.html

JetsMania
fun fun fun. I hope everyone is alright and there was a good reason for the discharge. I think saying you have a bomb and then running off the plane away from the police is reason enough
Flying_Mollusk
My guess is that he freaked out over something stupid and really wanted to get off the plane. So he probably said he had a bomb. But I could be wrong. Either way saying you have a bomb and running is clearly justification for the marshall.
Accord
I'm watching Fox News right now and they said the police released a statement saying that the man was bi-polar and had other problems. Regardless... I'm glad the man was shot and killed. Over the past year or so people have began to say that FAMS were a joke, waste of a tax dollars, etc. well this obviously shows otherwise. Good job, git sum. As someone who will be going away and flying this weekend, it's good to know that there are 2,000 federal Marshals that are locked and loaded guarding our airways. Imagine if there were armed Marshals on those flights which were hijacked on 9/11, things probably would have turned out a lot different. Get some! Accord
who said air marshalls were a waste of taxpayer money? There was a huge controversy about the entire FAMS program when there was the power struggly between USMS and ICE a few years back. ICE wanted control of FAMS, the USMS wanted their own Marshals on flights and FAMS to be dissolved, and it was a big mess, but in the end it was decided that FAMS and USMS should be totally seperate and FAMS now falls under ICE. It's great that this happened today, and it sends a strong message to any would be terrorists seeing this whole thing unfold.
FutureGM
If I remember correctly, it took awhile for enough funding to get to the Federal Air Martial program in the first place. It wasn't until the public came out in support of the program that Congress finally gave them enough funding. The articles don't say that the person was in fact killed, just shot and wounded. They shouldn't be shooting to kill in the first place, unless there is a clear and imminent threat.

Saying you have a bomb in your carry on bag, not stopping when asked by an air marshall, and then reaching into said bag pretty much constitutes a clear and imminent threat

Uh, there WAS a clear and imminent threat. You know, I almost expected a reply like that from you. If you are put into a position where your life and the lives are others are in immediate danger, then you shoot to kill, PERIOD. The Marshal gave him more than enough chances to end the situation calmly, it wasn't until he reached into his bag when the Marshal was forced to shoot. Shaq-Man
Air Marshal Kills Passenger, Citing Threat 12.07.2005, 05:28 PM A passenger who claimed to have a bomb in a carry-on bag was shot and killed by a federal air marshal Wednesday on a jetway to an American Airlines plane that was about to take off for Orlando, officials said. No bomb was found in the bag, a U.S. official said. Homeland Security Department spokesman Brian Doyle said the dead man was a 44-year-old U.S. citizen. It was the first time since the Sept. 11 attacks that an air marshal had shot at anyone, he said. According to a witness, the man frantically ran down the aisle of the Boeing 757 while his wife tried to explain that he was mentally ill and had not taken his medication. The passenger indicated there was a bomb in his bag and was confronted by air marshals but ran off the aircraft, Doyle said. The marshals went after him and ordered him to get down on the ground, but he did not comply and was shot when he apparently reached into the bag, Doyle said. The plane, Flight 924, had arrived in Miami from Medellin, Colombia, just after noon, and the shooting occurred shortly after 2 p.m. as the plane was about to take off for Orlando with the man and 119 other passengers and crew, American spokesman Tim Wagner said. After the shooting, investigators spread passengers' bags on the tarmac and let dogs sniff them for explosives, and bomb squad members blew up at least two bags. A U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the information's sensitivity, said authorities examined the bag and found no explosives. The concourse where the shooting took place was shut down for a half-hour, but the rest of the airport continued operating, officials said. Mary Gardner, a passenger aboard the Orlando-bound flight, told WTVJ-TV in Miami that the man ran down the aisle from the rear of the plane. "He was frantic, his arms flailing in the air," she said. She said a woman followed, shouting, "My husband! My husband!" Gardner said she heard the woman say her husband was bipolar - a mental illness also known as manic-depression - and had not had his medication. There were only 32 air marshals at the time of the Sept. 11 attacks. The Bush administration hired thousands more afterward, but the exact number is classified. http://www.forbes.com/home/feeds/ap/2005/1.../ap2376577.html

So, if you know your husband is mentally ill and hasn't taken his medication, why the hell would you let him near an airport????
Hotcorner
That bipolar disorder is really bizarre when you look at some of the things people have been capable of. I mean there are some really extreme cases that are just baffling.
