Matt Herges

i think he is being over used alot! almost every game im seeing him used in the 7th or 8th inning and it always goes down hill from then on when he comes into the game. its like bad luck or something. i want to see messenger and german pitch alot more.

It's not bad luck, he just sucks.

I don't think it's time to cut bait on Herges quite yet, but his role could be reduced some in favor of Welly, German, and Messy.

He currently leads the bullpen in appearances and IP.

The real problem here is the fact that the starters don't usually get through 6 (or even 5) innings. If Olsen could have lasted another three innings yesterday, then Herges doesn't come in at all (Messenger for 7th and 8th, and Borowski the 9th would have taken care of it). I think Herges has some value to this team, but he will be continued to be setup to fail as long as our starters don't contribute.

Opp. have a .308 avg against Herges. His projected K to walk ratio is 50BB and 69K and he is projected to go 0-12.

At least he has more strikeouts than walks. Vargas, Olsen, and German do not. (Johnson is close at 9 BB vs 10 K)

Do you really think that's true? I don't. If the starter goes 7, Herges pitches the 8th, and JoBo pitches the 9th. Whatever the reason, Girardi wants Herges in there, before anyone else.

he probably planned on Herges's performance to be a little closer to average than he's fared so far. I agreed with him giving higher leverage innings to more veteran pen guys at first, and JoBo has done pretty well I think. Herges, however, needs to have his role reduced situations of less import.

He doesn't suck, look at his career numbers, even with the horrible season he is having right now, his career ERA is STILL in the low 3's

He is just having a bad year, but I agree, there is NO point using a struggling releiver in close situations.

Does anybody seriously like him? Does he bring anything to this team?

In my opinion he brings veteranship that isn't needed at this time. As a veteran you need to set an example for the young guys, if you are allowing to be hit around like he is you won't have the repsect of the youngsters, at this point he brings 0 to the table and should be waived. I am sure many will agree. He was once good pitching for the Giants, but those days are CLEARLY behind him. Time to move on.
