Girardi vs Loria

Featured Replies

You can not deny the job Girardi has done. Loria gives credit to the front office instead which is weak imo. Right as this team is getting hot he can't put his personal issues aside? If he wants to make a move at the end of the year fine (big mistake). How does he lose by letting things play out and keeping guiet for 5 weeks? Below is the article from espn/ ap:

MIAMI -- Florida Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria offered a curt assessment of his strained relationship with manager Joe Girardi, which may mean the two will soon part company.

"Managers obviously have some input during the course of the season ... but what's important is the product that's put on the field by the baseball department as well."

Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria

"Everything is, you know, it's fine," Loria said Saturday. "But I don't want to talk about it."

Addressing his rift with Girardi for the first time since it became public three weeks ago, Loria repeatedly tried to steer the conversation away from the subject. He declined to endorse the job Girardi has done in his first year as manager, even though baseball's youngest team has far exceeded expectations.

"Managers obviously have some input during the course of the season," Loria said. "But what's important is the product that's put on the field by the baseball department as well. An amazing job was done by our organization before we started this season."

When told his comments might fuel the perception Girardi won't return next season, Loria told reporters: "If you guys want to come to those conclusions, OK. As far as I'm concerned, the only focus for me and the fans should be what's on the field, personalities aside."

The rift erupted at a game Aug. 6, when Loria berated an umpire while sitting behind the plate. From the dugout, Girardi told or asked the owner to stop, witnesses said. Loria angrily left his seat and confronted Girardi after the game during a 90-minute clubhouse meeting.

Loria has declined to comment on the episode or respond to published reports that he fired Girardi, then changed his mind.

"I don't want to talk about ancient history," Loria said shortly before Saturday's game against Milwaukee. "These kids deserve the opportunity to finish out the season unencumbered by peripheral issues like who said what or who did what."

Girardi, under contract through 2008, has repeatedly declined to discuss the matter or his future. With baseball's lowest payroll, the Marlins were widely projected to lose more than 100 games, but instead they remain on the fringe of the NL wild-card race.

Loria, without Girardi the Marlins would still be the laughing stock of MLB, moreso than the Royals. Grow up!

I think deep down inside, Loria is actually disappointed the Marlins are doing so well. Kind of like in Major League how that female owner or whatever wanted her team to do bad so she could get more money and move the team.

Striking resemblance.

you are so clueless. loria would never make as much money in san antonio or portland with a market the size of south florida PERIOD.

im not convinced girardi deserves that much credit. all these guys the marlins fo gathered were very good prospects in their former teams. id give a ton of credit to the FO before giving it to girardi.

Get off Loria's nutsack and open your eyes.

Fiscally speaking for Loria's own wallet, the Marlins with a stadium in a smaller market > Marlins with no stadium in South Florida. Period.

The only reason we're not the San Antonio Smugglers or the Portland Felons is because they wouldn't give Loria a free stadium. If they did, our team would be packing it's bags right now.

yeah, it's not like the club has been losing millions of dollars the past few years or anything.

san antonio was ready to put a measure on the ballot that would have given loria a stadium at a relatively low cost. the reason the marlins arent packing their bags is because hialeah came up and mlb really wants a franchise down here. see: backdoor negotiations with city of miami without consent of the marlins

the marlins might have threatened to move, but it was never going to happen. countless teams have made similar threats and gotten stadiums

going back to your original point, i dont see why loria would want the team to lose. low attendance or 120 losses wasnt going to get mlb to accept a move. if anything it give mlb the reason to throw loria out of the owner's club. so i still dont see the point of your original post. but w/e ignorance is bliss....

You have to be joking....this team has talent all around. Girardi didn't make Cabrera hit .341, he didn't make Dan Uggla a Rule 5 scrub into an all star player, he didn't make all 5 of our starters awesome (didn't even want 2 of them in the rotation), and he didn't even want to start Olivo who is having an all star type season.

I will give my credit to Beinfest and our scouts. Our next manager can win with this team as well.

Stop twisting the facts, an ~$80 million dollar funding gap is not 'relatively low cost' and is certainly not free, what Loria was looking for.

80 million is a lot less than the 192M he was going to put in here.

he was never going to get a free stadium and he knew it. the purposals in san antonio, portland, norfolk and charlotte required loria to put money in and he knew it before he threatened to move.

I give the FO the most credit. I give Girardi credit for the players playing up to their talent. The FO is what got this talent here. Loria is a scum bag and im not gonna deny that but IMO most of the credit should fall on Beinfest then Girardi.

Sadly I gotta agree.

I can't remember many games that Girardi has won based on his managerial decisions, but I can remember quite a few that he's LOST. This team is loaded with talent and anytime a team plays well the manager looks like a genius (do you really think Ozzie Guillen is a baseball genius just because of last year?)

Sadly I gotta agree.

I tend to agree. Baseball is the least team oriented sport giving managers less credit for success. But 2003 has always made me wonder. Why did we fail for a number of years and then all of a sudden just turn it on? And even with Guillen, the guy is a nut, but the White Sox had always underachieved with great talent. Then all of a sudden they become contenders. Arte Howe was probably the counter to this. Maybe there is some good mojo or something, I cant explain it.

Sadly I gotta agree.

"quite a few that he he's LOST"

defend that statement

Just think of the times when he stuck in a struggleing Herges in a tie game or when we had the lead and we lost

I was actually asking Lord Vadar to defend that statement but I'll play along.....

So what your saying is that ANYTIME we lost a lead it was Girardi's fault and we had more reliable relievers to go to other than Herges?

Is this correct?

Sadly I gotta agree.

Im saying thats its a bad move to stick in someone to hold on to the lead when there stuggleing that bad

EVERYONE was struggling pre-May 22nd

no...not Cabs, Hanley, Messenger

I was talking about the relievers (Messenger was stinking up the joint too)

:thumbup

It's naive to assume this team was going to perform well with anyone as manager. Nobody would have been shocked if this team had continued to play all season just as it had early on. I'm not saying Girardi deserves all the credit, but it's not fair to say that these guys have talent and would have been fine with anyone. I don't dispute that our team has talent, but it also has a lot of youth.....if it were this easy to instantly get younger and stay talented then we wouldn't be the only ones doing it. This year has been a combination of excellent FO work, excellent coaching, and players that are working hard.
